  • With the wide application of fiber-reinforced composite material in aero-structures and mechanical parts, the design of composite joint have become a very important research area because they are often the weakest areas in composite structures. In this paper, the failure strengths of the hybrid composite joints which were composed of a combination of an adhesive joint and a mechanical joint were evaluated and predicted. The 10 hybrid joint specimens which have different w/d, e/d and adherend thickness were manufactured and tested. The damage zone theory and the failure area index method were used for the failure prediction of the adhesive joint and the mechanical joint, respectively and the hybrid joints were assumed to be failures if either of the two failure criteria was satisfied. From the results of experiments and analyses, the failure strengths of the hybrid joints could be predicted to within 25.5%.

  • Ball joint is a rotating and swiveling element that is typically the interface between two parts. In an automobile, the ball joint is the component that connects the control arms to the steering knuckles by playing a role of bearing. The ball joint can also be installed in linkage systems for motion control applications. This paper describes the simulation strategy for a ball joint analysis, considering manufacturing process. Its manufacturing process can be divided into plugging and spinning. Then, the interested response is selected as the stress distribution generated between its ball and bearing. In this paper, a commercial code of NX DAFUL 2.0 using an implicit integration method is introduced to calculate the response. In addition, the gap analysis is performed to investigate the fitness. Also, the optimum design is suggested through case studies.

  • Generally, joints are the weakest part in the composite structures. Composite joints can be classified into adhesive joints and mechanical joints, and mechanical joints are mainly used in areas less sensitive to environmental conditions. In this paper, the failure loads of composite mechanical joints with five different stacking angles are tested and predicted. Finite element analysis of mechanical joints were performed and failure loads were predicted by the FAI(Failure Area Index) method using Tsai-Wu and Yamada-Sun failure criteria, and the predicted failure loads were compared with experimental results. From the experiment and analysis, the failure loads of the mechanical joints were decreased as the ratio of 0 degree layer was low and they could be predicted within 13.03% using the FAI method and Yamada-Sun failure criteria.

  • An experimental method based on contact resonance is developed to extract the contact parameters of mechanical joints under various clamped conditions. Mechanical joint parameters of shear contact stiffness and damping were extracted for different physical joint parameters such as surface finish of the mating surfaces, the presence of lubrication, the effect of the clamping pressure, and shear load. It was found that the shear contact stiffness values decreased with increasing clamping load and increased with increasing shear loading. Contact damping ratio values were almost constant with clamping load, but decreased with increasing shear load. Moreover, rough surfaces exhibited the highest shear stiffness and contact damping compared to smooth surfaces.

  • This paper proposes a new topology optimization scheme to determine optimized joints for multi-component models. The joints are modeled as zero-length high-stiffness spring elements. The spring joints are considered as mesh-independent springs based on a joint-element interpolation scheme. This enables the changing of the location of the joints regardless of the connected nodes during optimization. Because the joints are movable, the locations of the optimized joints should be aggregated at several points. In this paper, the novel joint dispersal (JD) constraint to prevent joint clustering is proposed. With the joint dispersal constraint, it is possible to determine the optimized joint location as well as optimized topologies while maintaining the minimum distance between each joint. The mechanical compliance value is considered as the objective function. Several topology optimization examples are solved to demonstrate the effect of the joint dispersal constraint.

  • In multibody mechanical systems, low-degree-of-freedom (DOF) joints such as revolute and translational joints are much more frequently used than high-DOF joints. In order to formulate kinematic constraint equations, especially for low-DOF joints, in an efficient and systematic manner, this paper presents a parametric generalized coordinate formulation as a new approach for describing constraint equations. In the proposed approach, joint constraint equations are formulated in terms of a mixed set of Cartesian and parametric generalized coordinates, which drastically reduces the complexity and computational cost of the partial derivatives of the constraints such as the constraint Jacobian. The proposed formulation is validated using a simple cylinder-crank system with an implicit integrator.

  • Mechanical joint and adhesive joint are two typical joining methods for structures. The adhesive joints distribute the load over a larger area than mechanical joints and have excellent fatigue properties. However, the strength of adhesive joint greatly depends on the environmental conditions and the skill of the operator. Therefore, there is a need for techniques to evaluate the quality of the adhesive joints. The electric resistance method is a very promising technique for detecting defects by measuring the electrical resistance of an adhesive joint in which CNTs are dispersed in an adhesive. In this study, Aluminium-Aluminium adhesive single lap joint specimens were fabricated by using the adhesive dispersing CNTs using a sonicator and a 3-roll mill, and the static strengths and defect detection capabilities of the joints using the electrical resistance method were evaluated according to the CNTs content.
