  • The purpose of this study was to investigate high school students in natural science track and engineering major university students' perceptions about the writing and composition education. A total of 318 high school students in natural science track from two high schools in a metropolitan area and 447 university students majoring in engineering from three universities participated in the survey and asked to response their perceived status and needs of writing education for science-engineering track. The survey instrument, developed by Lee et al.(2009), was used for this study. The data was analyzed through the SPSS 18.0 program for Windows for Multiple Response Frequency Analysis, Descriptive Statistics, Independent Samples t-test, and One-way Analysis of Variance. The results indicated that high school students relatively perceived that writing education was less necessary compared to university students. In addition, high school students found writing less difficult than university students do. In related to studying their experience with writing and composition education, almost no high school students have taken writing classes and university students have taken an average of one class. Most university students who took writing classes took basic writing classes that were not programmed for students in Science and Engineering. In the basic survey to revitalize writing and composition education for Science and Engineering students in different majors, the level of writing and composition education required by students in each major was different. Writing was considered most necessary for students majoring in Chemical Engineering, followed by students majoring in Mechanical Engineering and Electronic Engineering. The study of writing and composition education for high school and college should extend to studies on teachers or professors who teach writing, studies on contents and methods of writing education, and studies on the development of writing programs for different majors in university.

  • This paper presents the current status of creative writing education through examining studies which have been published since 2000 and discusses the future direction. Following the Korean government's educational slogan to nurture creative and competent talents, creative writing, as one of foundational skills across disciplines, had begun to be introduced into the curriculum of liberal arts colleges from early 2000s and has become a required course since 2015. Although many studies on creative writing education have been conducted during this period, whether creative writing, which enhances creativity dealt in cognitive sciences, can be recognized as an independent field of study calls for in-depth discussion. The ongoing issues concerning creative writing education involve a lack of professional instructors and absence of the operational and evaluative system. What's necessary is a clear definition of the extent of creative writing education; the educational efficiency of the proposed contents also need further verification. Therefore, as the basis for future constructive conversation, the current paper recapitulates the literature on creative writing education in Korean universities, classifying studies based on periods and cases of contents, and presents the direction regarding the operation of and research on creative writing education.

  • In this study, we sampled science writing tasks and investigated their frequency of use shown in the chemistry domain from two sets of 18 middle school science textbooks developed under the 2007 Revised National Curriculum(RNC) and the 2009 RNC, respectively. In addition, we categorized the sampled science writing tasks depending on the cognitive process and type of writing and compared with the results obtained from analysis of global issues presented in the science writings. From the textbooks developed under the 2007 RNC, a total of 183 science writing tasks were identified in which 10.17 tasks per textbook and 1.32 tasks per 10 pages were used averagely. A total of 168 were identified from the textbooks for the 2009 RNC. Among them, 9.33 tasks per textbook and 1.23 tasks per 10 pages were used on average. Comparing with these results, the average frequency of use of the tasks per textbook and per ten pages were decreased, respectively. Moreover, the number of science writing tasks were found in each curriculum varied considerably depending on the units and the publishers, and that the writing tasks were mainly arranged in the finale, wrapping up stage. In the analysis of science writing tasks according to the cognitive process, the highest and lowest frequency of use were observed in the category of 'understand' and 'remember', respectively. According to the classification of science writing tasks based on the types of writing, the writings for the information delivery were most used and the highest frequency of use was observed in the category of 'understand' of the cognitive process belonging to 'information delivery'. As for the results of the analysis of global issues, the number of science writing tasks including global issues increased from 21(11.48%) in the 2007 RNC to 33(19.64%) in the 2009 RNC. Furthermore, science writing tasks associated with protection of environment showed the highest frequency of use in the both curriculums, and it was analyzed that the materials of global issues used in the 2009 RNC were much more diverse.

  • This paper examines what kind of writing ability KEC2005 requires for upper grades of engineering college. According to KEC2005, they need writing ability in the field of majors, especially capstone design subjects as well as general communication skills. An experience on preparing a quasi-research paper has some potential to be better for these demands than other writing training forms. The contents of assignments submitted by the students taking a class 'Writing in Science & Technology' in Seoul National University in 2009 supported this point of view. This paper is about a case study discussing the detailed relationship between KEC2005 and writing, and helps engineering colleges to design their own writing programs.
