  • The prediction of AOV(air-operated valve) performance is normally evaluated by the allowable opening thrust margin for the opening and closing stroke. However, it is not easy to carry out the dynamic test measurement for all the valves in the nuclear power plant due to the safety and operating conditions. The analysis of the available and required thrust for the valve is simulated as an alternate method to turn around this obstacle. The required air pressures to the stem displacement are discussed for differential valve pressure obtained by experiment. The result of the simulation is compared with that of the experiment. SIMULINK in MATLAB was used for the simulation and the results show good agreement with the actual test carried out with Fisher globe valve.

  • Hand Motion Modeling and Recognition (HMR) are a fundamental technology in the field of proactive computing for designing a human computer interaction system. In this paper, we present a 3D HMR system including data glove based on 3-axis accelerometer sensor and 3D Hand Modeling. Data glove as a device is capable of transmitting the motion signal to PC through wireless communication. We have implemented a 3D hand model using kinematic chain theory. We finally utilized the rule based algorithm to recognize hand gestures namely, scissor, rock and papers using the 3-D hand model.

  • A glove valve regulates the flow in a pipeline as a kind of control valve. However, when the disc and seat contact, the valve structure can be distorted and flow can leak due to the elongation of the valve material under high pressure. The surface texture is not good enough to seal the contact surface (in practice) because the lapping process is usually done manually. Furthermore, assembly performance is analyzed by structural analysis. Compared with a standard seat, the newly designed seat had a smaller radial deformation and a larger longitudinal deformation. Therefore, the newly designed seat can maintain a tight and uniform contact with the disc with a reduced radial deformation and an expanded available seal area with an increased longitudinal deformation. The seal performance of the glove valve has been improved in a cost-effective manner.

  • The reductive extraction process is an important step to refine the TRU product from the electrorefining process for the preparation of transmutation reactor fuel. In this study, it was studied on the reductive extraction between the eutectic salt and Bi metal phases. The solutes were zirconium and the rare earth elements, where zirconium was used as a surrogate for the transuranic(TRU) elements. All the experiments were performed in a glove box filled with a argon gas. Li-Bi alloy was used as a reducing agent to reduce the high chemical activity of Li. The reductive extraction characteristics were examined using ICP, XRD and EPMA analysis. The reduction reaction was equilibrated within 3 hours after the Li addition. Three eutectic salt systems were compared and Zr was successfully separated from the rare earth elements in all the three salt systems.

  • We have developed glove based hand gesture recognition system for recognizing 3D gesture of operators in remote work environment. Polhemus sensor attached to the PinchGlove is employed to obtain the sequence of 3D positions of a hand trajectory. These 3D data are then encoded as the input to our recognition system. We propose the use of the strokes to be modeled by HMMs as basic units. The gesture models are constructed by concatenating stroke HMMs and thereby the HMMs for the newly defined gestures can be created without retraining their parameters. Thus, by using stroke models rather than gesture models, we can raise the system extensibility. The experiment results for 16 different gestures show that our stroke based composite HMM performs better than the conventional gesture based HMM.

  • In this paper, an efficient technique is proposed to integrate the 3D user interface with the tiled display system in PC cluster environment. In the developed 3D user interface software, various menus are provided to increase the user friendliness of the interface, including the several model-control-commands. To eliminate the noise produced from the 3D user interface devices, the box filtering algorithm is employed. Further, a communication splitting algorithm, which is a kind of asynchronous communication method, is proposed to reduce the motion delay between the 3D interface and the tiled display system, and its efficiency is validated through the benchmarking tests.

  • A hydrogen determinator was modified and installed in the glove box to analyse total hydrogen content in irradiated zircaloy tube. The analysis method of hydrogen is Inert Gas Fusion(IGF)-Thermal Conductivity Detection(TCD). The hydrogen recoveries of no tin method using Ti and Zr matrix standards, respectively, were available within $3{\mu}g$ of hydrogen. Also the smaller size of sample showed the better hydrogen recovery. It was found that the hydrogen standard of Ti matrix is avaliable to hydrogen analysis in zircaloy sample. The mean radioactivity of irradiated zircaloy sample was 10 mR/hr and hydrogen concentration was 130 ppm.

  • BSR noise emerges in a vehicle as a result of road vibrations, engine vibrations, and speaker vibrations. BSR noise occurs with an irregular impact or stick slip friction phenomenon as the influence of the resonance mode when the vibration input load is transferred along poor joint and contacting pairs of the system. A sub-structure method of finite element analysis is required to detect impacts and slip in the full vehicle model. This study presents a method for sub-structure modeling and a rattle and squeak detection methodology that considers the characteristics of road vibration inputs.

  • The identification of the dynamic properties of structural joints is important for predicting the dynamic behavior of assembled systems. However, the identification of the properties using analytical or experimental approaches is extremely difficult or even impossible. Several studies have proposed hybrid or synthesis methods that simultaneously used analytical and experimental approaches to identify the dynamic properties of a joint. However, among the many types of joints, only the bolt joint was treated as a practical example in these studies. In this study, for a simple assembly system comprising two plates and one hinge joint, a simple methodology involving the use of the static-based subpart analysis method to identify the dynamic properties is proposed. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a glove box in a passenger vehicle that includes hinge joints.
