Modern cultural heritage were made with various materials. But there are no certain analysis for modern cultural heritage. Analysis on rickshaw from National Museum of Korean Contemporary History were carried out using P-XRF, species identification, paint film analysis, FT-IR and microscope observation. As a result Copper and Zinc were measured in metal parts. Nickel alloys were first used in the modern era for rickshaw. Wooden parts, Oak(Quercus spp.), bamboo(Phyllostachys spp.) and Hinoki cypress(Chamaecyparis spp.) were identified. Outer films were painted by 5 layers and inner films were painted by 3 layers. More simple painting process were performed on the inner part. Cotton and wool were identified by FT-IR. Also, cowhide were identified. Authenticity conservation and restoration could be carried out with the results.
Just as culture is a collection of lifestyles, Cultural Properties is what is made over a long period of time and is left around us, whether it takes form or not. Many countries around the world have their own standards and are trying hard to preserve those with precious values. And in the case of Modern Architecture, because they are still in use In our daily lives and for the lack of recognition, they are continuously threatened during urban changes and developments. The purpose of the research is not to preserve Modern Architecture as done In the museum, but to seek a way for it to coexist with the changing environments of contemporary cities. Therefore, it is to recognize Modern Architecture as valuable assets, which expresses historicity in urban settings, and to seek the design characteristics of Modern Architecture. This is a process in order to find a new method for conservation of historicity. The result are as followings. Modern Architecture have their design characteristics and these can be applied as a design guideline. Therefore the form, material, and the colors of individual Modern Architecture can be analyzed so as to create a design guideline according to their styles. According to the analysis of Registered Cultural Properties in Seoul, they can be categorized into 6 uses and found the design characteristics of individual uses.
Since the idea of registering architectural heritage from the early 20th century was introduced as part of the code in the Cultural Heritage Protection Law in July, 2001, more systematic and flexible application the code has been in great demand. It is the aim of this thesis that we preserve modern buildings and then use this research data what find our modern history. So we should find connection of modem and tradition with the overcome of the feeling of being victimized. Accordingly, based on preservation cases and finding of modern house heritage, it is the aim of this thesis that we find the way of the best use. The purpose of this research is to establish a more comprehensive and commonsensical guideline for the preservation of modern architecture satisfying both the government and the registering party, based on more thorough architectural analysis of residential edifices. The results of this study were as follows: (1) It is necessary for application and conservation by point, area and network method. (2) It is needed that periodically check and record central system for the purpose of the management of those. (3) It's consider that develop of conservation method on co-ownership with citizen by house personality.
The Old Town of Daejeon has significantly gone down due to population decrease and vacancy of buildings. To resolve these problems, it is necessary to develop revitalization measures with unique features, but it is also important to use historical and cultural resources from a certain point for the regeneration of local community. The Old Town of Daejeon has a number of industrial structures and architectural heritages that give character to the spaces, but most of them are being impoverished without any use although they have universal value. This study examined the standards to evaluate the importance and value of modern industrial heritages as historical resources that contributed to the development of local community and discussed case studies to review the value and use of industrial heritages that laid the foundation of Daejeon's development as a modern city to address the needs for urban regeneration through preservation and use of modern industrial heritages. Also, the limitations of administrative efforts were identified and the solutions were sought to address the needs to gather efforts with local government offices and the private sector. In conclusion, this study suggests an active and open policies to use cultural heritages through the use of modern industrial heritages for the revitalization of local communities based on the study of policies for the communication of urban users and community cultural spaces, preservation of landscapes including industrial heritages, and preservation in connection to social organizations and social companies, and that it is necessary to provide policies followed by efforts, i.e., to arbitrate the owners.
This paper investigates the process of change in the meaning of the term gongye (工藝) (nowadays it means craft) during Korea's transition to the modern era. The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty (朝鮮王朝實錄) will serve as the basis for the examination of pre-modern usage, and the Korea-United States Treaty of 1882 for the changes that occurred between the translation from Chinese and from Japanese following the opening of the port . After the port opened, the meaning of gongye, which once broadly referred to the wide range of work of people from different fields, was narrowed down to singularly represent the manufacturing industry. Following the example of Japan, the first East Asian country to succeed in modernization, this new meaning of gongye was generally used in the context of embracing Western culture and creating industry. As industrialization emerged as a national mission, and new terminology was needed to express these new concepts, the Chinese characters used by the Japanese to translate Western concepts were directly imported and used without making any changes. Gongye was similar in meaning to gongeop (工業) (nowadays it means industry) at the time, and the two terms were used interchangeably. However, following the Japanese annexation of Korea, the cultural administration of the Governor-General imbued the term with artistic concepts, and gongye was differentiated from gongeop, As such, examining the establishment of terminology and concepts can be helpful for understanding the contradictions and problems of the Korean crafts scene, which were derived from a period in the past called the modern era.
As the tangible evidence, documentary art records are permanent records to reflect the historical, symbolical, cultural and artistic value. Also, documentary art records are related with mission fulfillment of public institution and it is documentary with administrative, cultural and artistic values as the works of documentary production and application of the administrative image. "The public records management law" was the first time that administration documents were incorporated and in the act No. 3 of administrative records management, the preservation and management system of documentary art records became legislated. The management of documentary art records are difficult to categorize only by the reflect of characteristics or materials. Because documentary art records are collected in many ways and made with materials. It needs to be collected with many informations on basic materials and with the appropriate conservation and management category. Documentary art records do not have lots of demands but the level of consciousness is improving and the possibility of opening to public is increasing for improvement with the right to know. In near future, the documentary art records will be used for the interpretation of historical and cultural preservation and modern cultural heritage could have the value as it is expected. Primarily to prevent deterioration on documentary art records the standard survey card should be made to categorize the damage rate and to check the status on each documentary art records. In addition, establishing a systematic management plan for various documentary art records are needed with the training of professionals for the conservation of documentary art records.

When historical or cultural buildings need to be repaired or reinforced, the changes of original features should be minimized, and the strengths of structures should be improved. Among the existing methods to reinforce historical wood structures, the carbon fiber reinforcement polymer (CFRP) installation method is one of the best ones to achieve the afore-mentioned requirements. Therefore, this study aims at investigating the reinforcing effects and failure modes of timber beams reinforced with the inserted CFRP, a part of roof trusses in modern wood structures, and at providing the fundamental test data to estimate the CFRP rein-forced timber beam in the application of this reinforcing method. The primary parameters in this study were the layout and amount of CFRP. It was observed that, when $0.3{\sim}0.7%$ of CFRP were installed, the strengths of reinforced timber beams increased up to 173% compared to its original strength, but their strengthening effects were heavily influenced by the characteristics of timber such as burls. In order to improve the applicability of this strengthening method, fundamental understandings on the characteristics of wood would be necessary, and there would be in need of researches on the non-destructive test for wood structures as well.
In this study, we introduce the French concept of 'valorisation' of heritage which corresponds to 'utilization(활용)' of heritage in Korea. As interests on the social, economic and identity values of heritage are increasing, it is considered as not only a target of protection and preservation but also an object of utilization. Even though this global transition has been formed quickly, the concepts regarding utilisation of heritage has not been academically founded and its related foreign terms or cases were not studied in depth. In particular, modern cultural heritage requires more attention and researches on the protection and utilization as it represents a relatively large range of utilization but it doesn't have strong protection policies. We justify the needs to introduce the concept 'valorisation' in Korea while analyzing Le Havre case that shows how to promote economic and social values of heritage as well as heritage values from 'local' to 'country' and to 'world'. This case was selected as it allows to identify the meaning of valorisation and heritagization process from modernly rebuilt areas after World War II to World Heritage Site.
Led by the Cultural Heritage Administration, studies on the cultural heritage of railways have merely focused on modern registered cultural heritage and on excavating the cultural heritage of modern rail transportation. Endeavors of institutions relevant to railways to protect the cultural heritage of railways were not sufficiently made. Only the internal guideline to protect the cultural heritage of railways made by the railway corporation is being implemented. This study aims to assert the need to examine the protective measures of the heritage of railroad cars and to vitalize plans of conserving the heritage of railroad cars. Also, plans to protect the heritage of railroad cars and methods to invigorate schemes of protecting the heritage of railroad cars will be suggested. The current situation of protecting the heritage of railroad cars was investigated via a field trip. Through exploring overseas examples of protecting the heritage of the railroad cars, ways to vitalize plans of widely publicizing the heritage of the railroad cars with their historical values were suggested. Results showed that first, the way of openly exhibiting conserved railroad cars by setting up stands other than the way of exhibiting and conserving in one site was necessary. Second, in order to properly preserve and manage the cultural heritage of railways, railroad cars, much like natural monuments or intangible cultural properties, need to be perceived as cultural properties. Also, it is necessary to amend the Cultural Properties Protection Law to include railway heritage. Third, the perception of the cultural heritage of railways should be heightened, and SNS, blogs, and cafes need to strategically promote this heritage in order to increase the public's interest. Fourth, in addition to enacting legislations and gaining institutional support for the cultural heritage of railways, the budget to operate the responsible department, and employing staff for the heritage of railroad cars should be resolved as a priority in order to enhance the capability of managing this cultural heritage. In order to rationally protect the cultural heritage of railways and invigorate plans to protect the cultural heritage of railways, it is necessary to garner administrative and financial support, and enact the appropriate legislation. The heritage of railroad cars is priceless and has a social value in terms of regional icons, historic marks, and the record of life. It is considered that in this situation, the standard of amending both policy and the Cultural Properties Protection Law for the heritage of railroad cars should be urgently established.

This study is a research examining reshaped pattern in the perspective of repairing parts and materials through repairing renovation of registered cultural properties constructed in modern times and results are as followings. Repairing construction of registered cultural properties of Jollanamdo according to parts is shown numerously in the order of roof, walls and windows, and mostly outworn as time passes on and leakage were the main cause of repair. Also when original shape was damaged by previous repair in the past, and this was another reason of repairing. It was surveyed that among the repairing job repair of damage occurred on the part of roofing area including water leakage, corrosion and damage of roofing material, and damage of groove channel were the most main cause of repair. Especially when roof leakage is occurred by outworn of roofing materials, this cause corrosion and damage of materials due to the damage of leakage parts and this cause repeating cycles of worse leakage again and again. Main repairing materials which deform the original shape of registered cultural properties were confirmed as copper plate used on the roof. Copper plate showing high frequency of application which replaces groove slate or cement roofing tile used on the roof before has high durability and anti-corrosion but it is considered improper material to recover original shape.
