The first modem department stores including Mitsukoshi, Georgia and Hwashin Department Stores began to appear in Korea under the Japanese Colonial Rule. They considered a variety of architectural elements like construction planning, shop arrangement, path of customer movement and interior design. The interior of modem department stores aimed to pursue the so-called modernization movement, but failed to fully contain the unique characteristics of the times in that particular period. Modem department stores took on new western styles prevailed in Korea and were characterized by the eclecticism in which various architectural forms exist together. In other words, their interiors implied a sign of the times in the confusing and corrupt world then. Especially those modern department stores were designed, repaired and extended by foreign designers who were ignorant of the history of Korean architecture. What is worse, their further remodelling practices made big mistakes by considering only functional and economical aspects and giving a back seat to the architectural and historical value of existing modern department stores. Therefore, we should make more efforts to study and conserve the fundamentals of modem architectures like modem department stores in order to have better understanding of the aesthetic value of indoor space and facilitating smooth communication between past and present.

  • After opening Suwon railway station in 1905, a new road was constructed between Suwon station and Paldalmun(the South gate). It was the starting point to change urban structures of Suwon and shape the new city scape. In 1914, administrative districts of Suwon were reorganized. Suwon-myeon (township, a subdivision of Suwon-gun) was promoted to Suwon-eup(town) in 1931. Suwon-eup expanded its territory and changed the address system from 'li(里)' system to Japanese address system, 'Jeong(町)' in 1936. From 1920s, road system was changed and transformed Suwon's urban structures. A straight road was built from Jongro intersection to Janganmun(the north gate) in 1928. Another straight road was constructed between Suwon station to Padamun in the early 1930s. Public office buildings used the Hwa Seong HaengGung(華城行宮) and some of building moved to new location with new buildings. Main buildings of most schools in Suwon were reconstructed since 1930s. Commercial buildings and stores were sprung up and had their own characteristics by region. Around Suwon station, there are more hotels and restaurants than other areas. Rearranging administrative areas, developing road system and new buildings transformed Suwon's spatial structures. Constructing new roads formed a straight road passing through Suwon. After reorganizing administrative areas, this road turned to be the central axis of Suwon. Buildings in new style on the axis made the modern cityscape in Suwon.

  • This paper aims to provide a conceptual framework to see the special zones in East Asia in relation to the territorialities of the state. For this, it will introduce Aihwa Ong's notion of 'spaces of exception', and provide some critical discussions on it. Unlike Ong, I do not see the spaces of exception as an outcome of neoliberal changes of the state. Instead, I propose to see the special zones in terms of the internal limitations of the modern state territoriality. In particular, I try to theorize the special zones in relation to the dialectics of the contradictory relations between mobility and fixity inherent in the territoriality of the modern nation state. In addition, it will be suggested to see special zones as an essential part of the spatiality of the East Asian developmental states, given the spatio-temporal contexts of the East Asian capitalist development. On the basis of these theoretical discussions, this paper will divide the special zones that have been developed in East Asia since the 1960s into 3 different types, including 1) developmentalist special zones, 2) neo-liberal special zones, and 3) special zones for transition, and discuss their characteristics.
