  • This study was conducted to investigate the soil mulching effect on growth and yield of Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz. The number of stem, stem diameter, and fresh weight of aerial part in black poly-ethylene film and transparent poly-ethylene film mulched condition were higher than those of non-mulching and rice-straw mulching. Number of flowers were high in the order of non-mulching, rice-straw, trans-P. E. film, and black P. E. film. Yield of underground part was higher in mulching condition than that of non-mulching. Dry rhizome yield in black P. E. film mulching was significantly high to compare with the other treatments. There was lower disease incidence of Phytophthora blight in trans-P. E and black P. E. film compare with the other treatments but any difference was not observed in essential oil content of rhizome. Significant positive correlation was found between rhizome weight and fresh weight of aerial part. It was also shown that the fresh weight of aerial part was greatly dependent on the number of stems and stem diameter.

  • The purpose of this study was centered on investigation of the effects N, P and K application rates on root yield and their available content (catalpol, sugar, ash and extracts) of Ji-whang(Rehmannia glutinosa Lib. var. purpurea Makino), and the current application rates(N 20kg/10a, $P_2O_5\;30kg/10a$, $K_2O\;20kg/10a$) was studied for Ji-whang production in Eui-sung Gun southeastern part of Korea Peninsular. The yields of fresh and dried rhizomas were 941-1,494 kg/10a and 251-385 kg/10a, respectively. The rhizoma yield increased highly with increasing the application amount of nitrogen more than 10 kg/10a, but the effects of phosphorus and potassium were observed only at the application level of 40 kg/10a and 20 kg/10a, respectively. Catalpol contents in rhizoma increased at the plot of 20 kg/10a application of nitrogen, but the effects phosphorus and potassium on the catalpol contents were not observed. Catalpol content in dried root increased with increasing N application more than 10 kg/10a. Fructose contents increased at the plot of 20 kg/10a and more N application, and galactose contents decreased with K application. With increasing N application, ash contents decreased, but ethanol extract contents increased.

  • This study was designed to establish the effects of Zingiber mioga, Zingiber mioga root and Zingiber ofiicinale on the lipid concentrations in hyperlipidemic rats. A total of 24 male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 60$\pm$5g were fed one of four experimental diets for 4 weeks: a control diet (hyperlipidemic diet), diets supplemented with 3% of Z. mioga, 3% Z. mioga roots or 3% Z. officinale. The concentration of total cholesterol in serum was significantly decreased by 31% in Z. mioga group compared to the control group. The HDL-cholesterol concentration was significantly higher in Z. mioga and Z. mioga root supplemented groups than in control group. Triglyceride concentration in serum and liver significantly decreased with 3% Zingiber supplemented groups compared with control group, but had no significant differences among three Zingiber supplemented groups. The contents of total cholesterol triglyceride free cholesterol and cholesteryl ester in liver were remarkably lower in Zingiber supplemented groups than in control group. However, hepatic phospholipid level was not showed significant effect.

  • In order to isolate antibacterial substances from the rhizome of Zingiber mioga Roscoe, the ethanol extracts was fractionated according to the activity against Bacillus subtilis, B. cereus and Staphylococcus aureus. Three antibacterial substances were isolated and purified by column chromatography and recrystallization. Compounds I and III showed activity against all the tested bacterias and compound II exhibited the activity against B. subtilis and B. cereus S. aureus. Compound I was examined antimicrobial activity against B. subtilis, B. cereus and S. aureus by optical density using Bioscreen C. Compound I showed strong growth inhibition at 10 ppm on B. subtilis and B. cereus for 72 hrs, and at 25 ppm on S. aureus. On the basis of spectrometric studies including $1^H-NMR$, ${13}^C-NMR$, DEPT, IH-lH COSY, HMQC, HMBC and IR, compounds I, II and III were identified as $(E)-8{\beta}(17)-epoxylabd-12-ene-15,16-dial\;(C_{20}H_{30}O_3,\;MW=318)$, galanolactone $(C_{20}H_{30}O_3\;MW=318)$ and galanal A $(C_{20}H_{30}O_3,\;MW=318)$, respectively. These results are the first reports on the isolation of $(E)-8{\beta}(17)-epoxylabd-12-ene-15,16-dial, galanolactone and galanal A from the rhizome of Zingiber mioga.

  • As part of studies on the high quality dunggule tea, made of Polygonatum odoratum root with different growth year were analyzed for their flavor compounds. The quality attributes related to flavors were compared between raw and roasted samples which were treated at $130^{\circ}C$ for 15 min. Free sugars in the roots were mainly composed of fructose ($3.59{\sim}4.83%,\;d.b.$), sucrose ($1.78{\sim}2.49%$), and glucose ($1.60{\sim}1.80%$). Threonine ($1,239{\sim}1,444\;mg/100g,\;d.b.$), arginine ($589{\sim}689$), histidine ($289{\sim}370$) were three major free amino acids. The root grown for three years showed the highest content in total free sugar and amino acids (p<0.05). There was negligible difference in proximate composition and Hunter's color parameter depending on the growth year of the roots. However, sensory scores on color, taste and aroma were highest in 3 years' root, which is found most suitable for the preparation of dunggule tea. The roasting of 3 years old root significantly reduced the content of fructose and sucrose (p<0.01). It caused most apparent changes in the decreasing amount of threonine and in the decreasing rate of lysine, showing the significant decrease in total free amino acid content (p<0.01).

  • This experiment was conducted to study the effect of growth characteristics and yield by different planting density on Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort.Number of stem, leaf and branch on main stem were plant reduced by increasing the plant density. Stem height was showed the highest at $50{\times}15cm$ planting density, but diameter did not show significant difference at different planting density. Stem number in $m^2$ of field area showed negative correlation with leaf number and branch number on main stem. The height of first branched node became longer by increasing stem number, leaf number and branch number on stem in $m^2$ of field area. Rhizome yield showed negative correlation with stem number and leaf number per plant, but showed positive with stem number in $m^2$ of field area leaf number and branch number of main stem. Root and rhizome weight per plant decreased by increasing planting density, but root and rhizome yield in $m^2$ of field area were increased by high planting density.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the efficient in vitro mass propagation methods for juvenile sporophytes of Matteuccia struthiopteris. Chopped segments of pinnae, petiole and rhizome were cultured on 1/2MS with 0.1% activated charcoal. Among these explant sources only rhizome segments produced young sporophytes, regenerating vigorously on 1/2 MS medium. Adjusting sucrose concentration to 2% and supplement to $50mgL^{-1}$ $NaH_2PO_4$ in 1/2MS medium proved to be more efficient for plant regeneration. Various combinations of growth regulators such as kinetin, BA, NAA, and IBA were added to the growing media, and the best sporophyte regeneration was obtained by $1{\mu}M$ kinetin. The BA addition resulted in vigorous proliferation of meristematic tissues, but without differentiation to sporophytes. Three types of culture methods, solid using agar, liquid stationary, and liquid shaking culture, were employed with or without activated charcoal. The addition of 0.1% activated charcoal to modified 1/2MS media (2% sucrose, $50mgL^{-1}$ $NaH_2PO_4$, $1{\mu}M$ kinetin, pH 5.8 and 0.8% agar) yielded highest sporophyte regeneration in liquid shaking culture.

  • This study was conducted to examine the characteristics of flowering and fruiting in Nelumbo pentapetala 'Yellow Bird'. Lotus rhizomes were planted in pot (70 cm in length and 71 cm in width) on April 18, 2008, and grown under rain shelter condition at a private farm in Muan-gun, Jeonnam. Ninety percent of the lotus plants were bloomed as two flowers per a plant, and the others were one flower. The first flowers were bloomed in the middle or late July, and the second flowers in the early August. Flower stalks were formed between eighth and tenth internodes in the main rhizome. Nelumbo pentapetala 'Yellow Bird' had light yellow flowers, 12 cm in length and 13 cm in width. Lotus plants of 21.4% were not bloomed, resulting from the insufficient securing of internodes in the main rhizome and the blind. We, therefore, concluded that Nelumbo pentapetala 'Yellow Bird' as a ornamental plant should be grown up to 8 in the node number of main rhizome until mid-July.
