집중안전 포커스 - 안전은 극한의 자연을 대하는 비결 '극지연구소(KOPRI)'

  • 극지(極地), 그곳은 말 그대로 '맨 끝에 있는 땅'이다. 흔히 남 북 양극지방을 통칭하는 말이기도 하다. 극지에 대한 일반 국민들의 관심은 2009년에 진수된 우리나라 최초의 쇄빙선 아라온호의 명성으로 극대화됐다. 거기에 얼마 전 TV 다큐멘터리 '남극의 눈물' 방영도 일반인들에게 극지에 대한 친숙함과 이해를 높이는 데 한몫 했다. 얼음과 눈, 그리고 살을 에는 추위뿐인 동토의 땅에서 대한민국 태극기를 펄럭이며 극지의 모든 것에 대해 연구하는 과학기지가 있다. 바로 남극 세종과학기지와 2014년 완공되는 장보고과학기지, 그리고 북극의 다산과학기지다. 인천광역시 연수구 송도동에 자리 잡은 극지연구소(KOPRI, Korea Polar Research Institute)는 극지와 그 관련지역에서의 기초 및 첨단 응용과학 연구, 남 북극 과학기지 운영 등을 지원하는 극지 전문기관으로, 국토해양부 한국해양과학기술원 부설기관이다. 이곳은 우리나라 유일의 극지연구전문기관으로, 미래의 기후 변화와 무한한 생물종을 연구하는 과학자들의 열의가 대단하다. 그 뜨거운 열기의 중심에는 바로 안전이 자리 잡고 있다. '극지'라는 특수지역을 무대로 삼아 국가적인 연구를 수행하고 있는 만큼 '안전'은 연구 활동을 뒷받침 하는 주춧돌이자 왕성한 연구활동을 이어나갈 수 있게 하는 원동력이 되고 있다. 안전을 위시해 전문적인 극지 연구를 하고 있는 이곳, 극지연구소만의 특별한 안전관리 현장을 찾아가봤다.

  • KOPRI(Korea Polar Research Institute) have researhed Arctic sea ice by using satellite remote sensing data since 2017 as a mission of KOPRI. The title of the reseach is "Development of Satellite Observation and Analysis for Arctc sea-ice". This project has three major aims; 1) development of prototype satellite data archive/manage system for Arctic sea ice monitoring, 2) development of sea ice remote sensing data processing and analysis technique, and 3) development of international satellite observing network for Arcitc. This reseach will give us that 1) deveolpment of sea ice observing system for northern sea route, 2) development of optimal remote sensing data processing technique for sea ice and selected satelite sensors, 3) development of international satellite onbservation network. I hope that this letter of introducton KOPRI satellite program for Arctic will help to understand Arctic remote sensing and will introduce you to step into the Arctic remote sensing, which Iis like a blue ocean of remote sensing.

Development of KOPRI's Experiential Field Trip Programs for the Spread of Polar Science Culture (극지과학문화 확산을 위한 극지연구소 체험형 견학 프로그램 개발)

  • The goal of this study is to develop a hands-on type polar field trip program to inform the importance of the recent polar research and to contribute to the spread of polar science culture. For this purpose, the direction of program development and field trip course were established based on the current Korea Polar Research Institute tour program and research exhibition facilities analysis. Based on this, a total of 6 types field trip programs were developed, including one basic tour program and one optional experience program for the overall introduction of polar research institutes and polar science fields, and four optional experience programs for each education participant that enables field trips and professional experiential learning activities by polar science field. The developed program was revised and supplemented through a total of two trials, and a field trip program manual was produced, including guidance scripts, experience kits, activity sites, and instructor guides for each field trip. At the end, a follow-up study was proposed based on the significance and research results of the developed program.

  • 극지연구소가 최근 바쁘게 돌아가고 있다. 남극 세종기지에 이어 본격적인 남극연구가 수행될 남극 장보고과학기지가 남극대륙 남단에 세워지고 있다. 한국 최초의 쇄빙연구선 아라온호는 지금 남북극을 항해하면서 다국적인 국제협력 연구가 한창이다. 송도국제도시에는 3만5천여$m^2$의 부지에 신청사가 세워지고 있다. 이 모든 움직임 뒤에는 사업을 진두진휘하고 있는 이홍금 소장이 있다. 극지연구소의 새 비전을 제시하고 있는 이 소장을 만나 보았다.

Secondary Metabolites Isolated from Ganoderma lucidum and Their Anti-inflammatory Activity (영지버섯(Ganoderma lucidum)으로 부터 분리한 이차대사산물 및 이들의 항 염증 활성)

  • Phytochemical study of Ganoderma lucidum (Polyporaceae) let to the isolation of five lanostane triterpenoid (1-5), along with two nitrogen derived phenolic compounds, N-phenylethylformamide (6) and N-acetylphenethylamine (7). The structures of the compounds were determined by 1D and 2D NMR, and MS experiments, as well as by comparison of their data with published values. Compounds 6 and 7 were isolated for the first time from the genus Ganoderma and this species. All the compounds were evaluated for cancer chemopreventive potential based on their ability to inhibit nitric oxide (NO) production induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in mouse macrophage RAW 264.7 cells in vitro. Among the isolates, compounds 2 and 3 showed moderate inhibitory activity against NO production.

  • This study analyzed the learning characteristics of polar education programs operated by polar research institutes in domestic and foreign countries and aims to provide directions for improving domestic polar education programs. Using the database provided by the Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI), 120 programs from 16 research institutes in 9nine countries were selected. Each program was analyzed based on educational level, instructor, education period, learning place, learning environment, learning content, and learning method. Significant differences in domestic and foreign programs in terms of instructors, operational methods, educational places, and learning methods were found. Based on these findings, we discuss the direction for improving domestic polar education by expanding the base of polar education, diversifying the learning methods, and systematizing polar education using examples of actual programs. Based on the scientific, social, economic, and cultural values and importance of the polar region, this study presents specific directions to further spread and sustain polar education and culture in Korea.
