  • This article examined the current status of performance activities in the theaters in Ulsan during the Japanese colonial period, and examined the characteristics and social roles of performance culture at that time.,The cultural space during the Japanese colonial period can be divided into theater space and semi-theater space.,The theater spaces in Ulsan include Daejeonggwan, Sangbanggwan, and Ulsan Theater. The semi-theater spaces include Ulsan Youth Center, Ulsan Youth Alliance Hall, Barrack Youth Hall, Eonyang Youth Alliance Hall, Eonyang Christian Hall, Eonyang Christian Hall, Eonyang Inn, Eonyang Public Inn, Eonyang Public Normal School, Seosaeng School, Ulsan Public Aid Auditorium, Night school.,These spaces not only held events or performances for a specific purpose, but also played a role as public spaces producing local discourse. The theater was a complex cultural space where performances are performed along with movie performances, and artists and audiences meet.,Furthermore, the theater provided a special experience of producing and consuming various issues such as colonial modernization, modern city formation, and the emergence of new popular culture beyond the meaning of stage space.,The theaters in Ulsan also functioned as a space to represent the foreign culture acceptance, leisure activities, the performance and viewing of cultural contents, and the artistic skills of local artists in accordance with the purpose of establishing local theaters.,It was a base space for local discourse production and enjoyment activities by holding political rallies, meetings, lecture activities, and various conferences.,Political rallies were also concerts, enlightenment activities were also accompanied by film screenings, and music performances were associated with dance performances and charity gatherings.,In particular, Ulsan Theater, which is the first theater in Ulsan, and the role of the public hall, held a lecture, debate, and oratory for public enlightenment along with performances such as musical drama, children's song contest, fairy tale contest, small-sized play performance,, It was widely used as a large-scale rallying place, and served as a public hall, such as a place to visit outside theaters. Thus, the theater and semi-theater space in Ulsan during the Japanese colonial period improved the cultural level of the region, fulfilling the aesthetic needs of the local people and faithfully fulfilling the social role as a public sphere leading the public opinion and agenda.,And it was also positioned as an alternative public area of modern society and also played a role as a public institution.

  • As dance performances in the theater space are centered on text, they have plots and make characters stand out. They also emphasize expressivity and technique, and their recognition of space is very modern and typical of dichotomous Cartesian thinking. The museum space has many similarities with the theater space in that it is a result of modernity and granted authority to present arts. The performances in museums place value more on the presence than on the representation. For this reason, works in museums, which are frequently presented in recent years, are mainly works of site-specific or performative concepts. Now, rather than being able to obtain from aesthetics defined as works, the museum is assured its own aesthetic production and justification, paying attention to the performance as an event occurring now and here.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze how Andong Joongang Cinema (hereinafter referred to as "The Cinema"), the only art cinema in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, is perceived by local people as a local cultural resource. For this, an analysis framework was set for analyzing local people's perception of The Cinema as a local cultural resource, by analyzing the functions of local cultural resources and the function of The Cinema and examining the correlation between the two sectors, on the basis of precedent studies on local cultural resources and related papers on art theaters and The Cinema. Based on the proposed analysis framework, the local people's perceptions of The Cinema as a local cultural resource were summarized into four divisions: the perception of the enjoyment of culture & art, the perception of historicity, the perception of a tourist attraction, and the perception of community formation. As a result, it is judged that The Cinema has the identity, the traditionality and the community spirit as the three functions of which a local cultural resource has, and thus, it is proved that The Cinema functions as a local cultural resource. Therefore, local cultural resources have been performing their functions encompassing its scope with the region's history and surrounding environment, not standing alone. The Cinema also has been functioning as a space for the enjoyment of culture and art, a tourist attraction, and a cultural space for communicating with the public, keeping its historicity of the region. It is expected that there will be specific follow-up studies so that The Cinema can consistently play its role as a local cultural resource.

  • Today the worship of entertainment i.e television has created a situation of diminshing monumental environments with increasing leisure time. Let us examine retrospectively the characteristics of the Urban theater Architecture. Two aspects would stand out as Theater Architecture gets closer to the urban tradition or trends to make a part of a city come to life. One aspect is an introvert purity. The other is an extrovert organic structure on the edge of connecting urban scenary with anything hoping to find the renewable element which could be revived eternally in architecture.

  • In general, performing facilities consist of various functional groupings. The functional groupings should be arranged, in relation to each other, depending on the circulation of users in a space. The performing culture in Korea has been rapidly progressed in recent years. However, compared to the superior examples of foreign performing facilities, it still needs improvements and systematic research. In this study, the functional groupings of general performing facilities as well as the circulation patterns of users will be analyzed. From the results of this study, a circulation system for each spatial composition will be suggested for the performing facilities to be constructed in the future.
