A Study of the Characteristic of Korean Grit: Examining Multidimensional Clustering of Grit (한국형 그릿(Grit) 특성에 대한 고찰: 높은 그릿집단의 다차원적 유형 연구)

  • The purpose of this research was to examine the characteristics of typical Korean grit as opposed to Western conceptualizations. We conducted cluster analysis to identify subgroups based on three related but distinct constructs-passion(harmonious vs. obsessive) and meaning in life. Basic needs satisfaction, life satisfaction, and ego-resilience were further assessed to explore potential group-specific differences in psychological attributes. Highly gritty individuals(n=139; M=22.51 yrs) were selected by using the median. According to our results, gritty individuals were subdivided into 3 groups: the initiative who possesses highly adaptive harmonious passion and meaning in life(35.8%), the obsessive who are high in maladaptive obsessive passion(26.1%), and the passive who are the lowest in all(38.1%). The initiative grit scored the highest in all three attributes while the two other subgroups showed culturally unique patterns. Our results suggest that culture specific factors may mold differently the unfolding and psychological outcomes of grit in Korea.

Effects of Grit and Conscientiousness on Academic Performance : The Mediation Effects of Self-Determination Motivation (그릿과 성실성이 학업 수행에 미치는 영향: 자기결정성 동기의 매개효과)

  • Grit, defined as "perseverance and passion for long-term goals", is a known personality trait that successfully predicts high performance in various fields. In spite of extant evidence of the effectiveness of grit, research has not yet clarified the relationship between grit and conscientiousness, a highly correlated personality trait. In this study(N = 355), we examined the effect of grit and conscientiousness on academic achievement, mediated by self-determination motivation. As a result, grit and conscientiousness both predicted academic performance, and intrinsic motivation mediated these relationships. However, conscientiousness no longer related with motivation and academic achievement when grit was controlled for, whereas grit maintained its relationship with motivation and achievement even when conscientiousness was controlled. This result indicates that although the two psychological concepts overlap to some extent, grit has a unique motivational and behavioral effect that distinguishes it from conscientiousness. The present study expands the current understanding of grit with its comparison between grit and conscientiousness. We suggest future research ought refine the grit scale to establish its discriminant validity.

A Study on the Relationship Between Grit and Well-Being with the Mediation Effect of Self-Efficacy: A Case of General Hospital Nurses in South Korea (그릿이 조직구성원의 웰빙과 자기효능감에 미치는 영향 -종합병원 간호사를 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship of grit with well-being and self-efficacy. Grit was considered as a two-factor variable with consistency of interest and perseverance of effort. For the empirical analysis, data were collected from the sample of 237 nurses working at general hospitals. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS 26 to test the hypothetical relationships. It was suggested that two factors of grit would be possible associated with well-being. However, the results of this study showed that the consistency of interest part of grit had non-significant effect on well-being, Perseverance of effort part of grit had indirect effect on well-being through fully mediation effect of self-efficacy. This study confirmed that grit, some how, positively related to well-being and variables such as, self-efficacy, could be a important variable to bridge grit to well-being. Further studies were suggested to perform studies on more about grit's two factors and unexplored external variables between grit and well-being of nursing professionals.

Differences between high school students' hope, grit, and school happiness by cluster type (일반고 학생 희망과 그릿의 군집유형별 학교행복의 차이)

  • The purpose of the study is to find out the difference between high school students' hopes and the school happiness of each cluster of grits. Method: 282 high students' responses were analyzed through correlation analysis and cluster analysis. Results: First, There is a positive correlation between hope and grit and school happiness. Second, Hope and Grit appeared in four clusters. School happiness had the highest "high psychological capital" group and the lowest "low psychological capital. Conclusion: It was discussed that the agency thinking and effort perseverance of grit should be reflected in the curriculum of general high schools. In addition, we propose to develop questionnaires for practical measurements.

그릿과 실책관리문화가 스타트업 구성원의 혁신행동에 미치는 영향

  • 본 연구는 스타트업이라 구분되는 기업의 구성원을 대상으로 그들의 혁신행동에 미치는 영향 요소를 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 긍정심리학에서 중요한 변수로 다뤄지는 그릿(Grit)과 스타트업에서 특히 중요시 여겨지는 실책관리문화 변수를 중심으로 혁신행동에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 그릿은 스타트업 구성원의 인내에 대한 노력, 조화열정, 상황적응력의 세 변수로 정의하였으며 실책관리문화와 더불어 스타트업 구성원의 혁신행동에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 본 연구를 위해 기술창업 기반 7년 이내 스타트업 재직자를 대상으로 2023년 12월부터 2024년 1월까지 설문조사를 진행해 유효한 305개의 샘플을 확보하였다. 연구모델 분석을 위해 SPSS 24 통계 패키지를 활용하여 그릿과 혁신행동과의 관계 및 실책관리문화와 혁신행동 관계를 분석하였다. 분석결과 그릿의 3가지 변수인 인내에 대한 노력, 조화열정, 상황적응력은 스타트업 구성원의 혁신행동에 정(+)의 영향을 미쳤으며 실책관리문화 또한 스타트업 구성원의 혁신행동에 정(+)의 효과를 나타냈다. 하지만 통제변수로 활용된 성별과 연령은 혁신행동에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 본 연구는 스타트업에게 매우 중요한 혁신행동에 영향을 미치는 변수들을 규명하고, 스타트업 구성원의 개인적 특성과 문화적 특성이 혁신에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 파악한데 의의가 있다고 하겠다. 본 연구 결과의 의의는 스타트업 혁신행동에 미치는 새로운 변수들을 규명했다는데 있다. 하지만 7년 이내 초기 창업 기업을 대상으로 305명이라는 제한된 표본으로 연구를 진행했다는 점이 향후 스타트업 범주 및 표본 확대를 보완하여 후속 연구의 확장이 필요하다고 판단된다. 또한, 그릿과 실책관리문화 외에 혁신행동에 대한 영향 변수의 규명이 필요할 것으로 사료된다.

The Relationship between High School Teachers' Grit and Job Stress Coping Strategies (고등학교 교사의 그릿과 직무스트레스 대응행동 간의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between high school teachers' grit and stress coping strategies and to understand differences in stress coping strategies by cluster types of grit. 226 in-service teachers participated in the survey who took the professional development program in the national educational training institute. Results are as follows. First, perseverance of effort in grit was the positively independent variable toward task-oriented and emotion-oriented strategies. The avoidance-oriented strategy was negatively influenced by consistency of interest in grit. Also, the clusters of high grit and high perseverance of effort in grit showed higher means in task-oriented and emotion-oriented strategies than the cluster of low grit. Finally, researchers discussed the importance of strengthening high school teachers' grit for them to cope with job stress effectively.

Effect of Grit on relationship between Temperamental Effortful Control and Academic Failure Tolerance (아동기 통제 기질이 청소년기 학업적 실패내성에 미치는 영향에서 그릿의 매개효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between children's Temperamental Effortful Control and adolescents' Academic failure tolerance(AFT). Specifically, Grit effect as a mediator between Effortful Control and AFT was also determined. A total of 108 children participated as they were at age 8, and as they turned 14 years old. Children Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ) was measured to investigate children's Effortful Control, and Grit scale and AFT scale were measured to investigate adolescents' Grit and their response to failure. The results of this study showed that children's Effortful Control was significantly related to AFT. And adolescents' Grit was also positively related to adolescents' AFT. In addition, Effortful Control was related to Grit. Finally, Grit partly mediated the relationship between Effortful Control and AFT.

The effect of Grit and Career Preparation Behavior on Academic Achievement among Healthcare major College Students (보건계열 대학생의 그릿, 진로준비 행동이 학업 성취도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of the study is to identify the grit and career preparation behaviors of healthcare major college students and to analyze factors associated with their academic achievements. A structured questionnaire survey was carried on 241 students at an university in D-city. The scores for grit, career preparation behavior, and academic achievements were 3.32, 2.87, and 3.44, respectively. The study results show statistical differences among academic achievements, motivation to choose major, and satisfaction with major and university. The strong and positive effects of grit and career preparation on academic achievements were found. The satisfaction with major(β=.279 p<.001) and grit (β=.224 p=.001) explained 23% of academic achievements. The results suggest various intervention programs based on multiple factors associated with grit and major satisfaction in order to enhance academic achievements.

Analysis of the relationship between play experience, playfulness, and grit of pre-service early childhood teachers (예비유아교사의 놀이경험과 놀이성, 그릿 간의 관계 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between play experience, playfulness, and grit of pre-service early childhood teachers and to find out the factors that affect grit. For these, a survey was conducted using Google questionnaire targeting a total of 164 students in the 2nd and 3rd year of early childhood education department of colleges in Seoul, Chungnam and Jeonbuk. The results are as follows. First, as a result of analyzing general characteristics and differences by grade of variable General characteristics and differences by grade of variable, it was found that the pre-service teachers' playfulness was slightly higher than the average, and the grit was at the average level. Second, there were some significant correlations between play experience, playfulness, and grit. Third, for grit, it was found that play experience had an explanatory power of about 10% and playfulness about 30%. Based on the above research results, suggestions for grit enhancement programs for pre-service early childhood teachers and follow-up studies were presented.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the moderating effect of learning strategy levels on the relationship between academic grit and career development competence perceived by high school students. The sample for this study comprised 573 high school students, and data analysis was conducted mainly using reliability analysis, correlation analysis, K-mean cluster analysis, hierarchical regression analysis. The results of the study showed that the learning strategy levels moderated the relationship between academic grit and career development competence. This study suggest it is necessary to provide grit enhancement programs coupled with learning strategy levels in order to facilitate career development competence. The future studies need to explore the literature review for logical relationship between academic grit and career development competence, the qualitative approach for drawing on the theoretical models among the related variables, and the relational research to explore mediating or moderating effect of the individual backgrounds and related variables on the relationship between academic grit and career development competence.
