  • Vehicle detection is the basic of traffic monitoring. Video based systems have several apparent advantages compared with other kinds of systems. However, In video based systems, shadows make troubles for vehicle detection, especially active shadows resulted from moving vehicles. In this paper, a new method that combines background subtraction and edge detection is proposed for vehicle detection and shadow rejection. The method is effective and the correct rate of vehicle detection is higher than 98% in experiments, during which the passive shadows resulted from roadside buildings grew considerably. Based on the proposed vehicle detection method, vehicle tracking, counting, classification and speed estimation are achieved so that traffic parameters concerning traffic flow is obtained to describe the load of each lane.

  • In video surveillance and monitoring (VSAM), extracting foreground by detecting moving regions is the most fundamental step. The foreground extracted, however, includes not only objects in motion but also their shadows, which may cause errors in following video image processing steps. To remove the shadows, this paper presents a new technique to determine shadow pixels in the foreground image of a VSAM camera system. The proposed technique utilizes a fact that the effect of shadowing to each pixel is different defending on its brightness in a background image when determining shadow pixels unlike existing techniques where unified decision criteria are used to all pixels. Such an approach can easily accommodate local features in an image and hold consistent Performance even in changing environment. In real experiments, the proposed technique showed better results compared with an existing technique.

  • Recently, the use of real-world image data has been increasing to express realistic virtual environments in various application fields such as education, manufacturing, and construction. In particular, with increasing interest in digital twins like smart cities, realistic 3D urban models are being built using real-world images, such as aerial images. However, the captured aerial image includes shadows from the sun, and the 3D city model including the shadows has a problem of distorting and expressing information to the user. Many studies have been conducted to remove the shadow, but it is recognized as a challenging problem that is still difficult to solve. In this paper, we construct a virtual environment dataset including the height map of buildings using 3D spatial information provided by VWorld, and We propose a new shadow detection method using height map and deep learning. According to the experimental results, We can observed that the shadow detection error rate is reduced when using the height map.

  • Cast shadow caused by an illumination condition can produce troublesome effects for face recognition system using reflectance image. Consequently, we need to separate cast shadow area from feature area for improvement of recognition accuracy. A Bilateral filter smooths image while preserving edges, by means of a nonlinear combination of nearby pixel values. Processing such characteristics, this method is suited to our purpose in illumination estimation process based on Retinex. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new illumination normalization method based on the Bilateral filter in face images. The proposed method produces a reflectance image that is preserved relatively exact cast shadow area, because coefficient of filter is designed to multiply proximity and discontinuity of pixels in input image. Performance of our method is measured by a recognition accuracy of principle component analysis(PCA) and evaluated to compare with other conventional illumination normalization methods.

  • This study is to illuminate the problem of shadows and evil appearing in contemporary events in the midst of a period of upheaval through Inferno of Divine Comedy. First, the concept of shadow and evil were briefly summarized in analytical psychology and discussed the importance of considering the concepts with the empirical aspect of relativity and ethics in the field of psychotherapy. The 14th century, the age of Dante, was the embryonic period of the Renaissance beyond the end of the Middle Ages. It was when Dante, who was writing Divine Comedy, had to take off his persona forcibly and live in exile. In a nutshell, it was a transition period for both the individual and the collective. The dark forest is a nigredo, darkness and chaos we face in this transition, but it can be a place of transformation and rebirth. The three beasts (leopard, lion, and she-wolf) encountered in the forest can be considered as the instinctual images that Dante ignored and alienated, which the medieval Christian world had suppressed and eliminated. Especially at the collective level, as destructive instincts, ferocious beasts roam throughout society when a crisis breaks dominant laws of values. The three beasts of Inferno appear as phenomena of shadows and evil. The aspect of leopard was explored Cerberus and Chiaco(pig) as a symbol of greed, and the lion, Farinata as the form of violent passion. The aspect of the she-wolf was examined as Geryon, a deceitful monster with a beast nature hidden behind goodness, the giants in the frozen lake of Cocytus, and Branca D'Oria, who betrayed and murdered the country and family. Inferno reveals the "state" of being trapped when one yields to the evil hidden within oneself and falls into prey.

  • Landsat is one of the popular satellites for observing land surface that is used in various areas including monitoring, detecting and classifying changes in land surface. However, shades, which cloud itself and its shadow, interrupted often clear observation and analysis of ground surface. For this reason, the process of removing shades and restoring original ground surfaces are critical for geospatial users. This study is planned to recommend a methodology for more accurate and clear images of Landsat-8 sensor, which provided two additional bands of costal/aerosol and cirrus. In fact, those bands are known as functioned effectively in detecting and restoring shades. Otsu's thresholding technique to detect clouds, we replaced those detective shades by using experimental and reference images. In accurate assessment, the overall accuracy and kappa coefficients were about 85% and 0.7128, respectively. This indicates that the proposed technique is effective for recovering the original land surface.
