  • Graffiti has been recognized as an art form since the influence of free, black culture and Neo-Expressionism in the 1980s, though Graffiti remains the subject of controversy both inside and outside the school Modem Art. Jean Michel Basquiat is the most famous Graffiti artist of the '80. He was regarded as the genius and star of American art, leaving a lot of experimental and creative works during his short, 9-year, creative period. In his works, Basquiat well expressed the isolated and dark shadows in the U.S., the pursuit of self identification, the purpose of expression and the epochally social phenomenon. The purpose of this study is to investigate the application of Jean Michel Basquiat's Graffiti to fashion painting. To achieve this purpose, we present a lot of fashion painting works which apply Jean Michel Basquiat's Graffiti by focusing on autographic experience, racialism, cartoon themes, monely value, and anatomical death in the characteristics of Basquiat's works. Through this process, we can express and apply Basquiat's Graffiti to fashion painting by analogizing the themes and modeling the methods of his works, such as childish and simple features, intentionally wrong spellings and sentences, and symbols of death including skeletons, intestines, bones and teeth. In addition, Basquiat's techniques are examined in this study, including the representational handling of a brush, primitive and strong colors, and maximized shape. This study found that fashion painting can juxtaposes art and fashion by expressing Jean Michel Basquiats' Graffiti.

  • In this paper, we proposed a set of ANSI-Korean character patterns for handwriting recognition that can be used as an input method of mobile computers like PDA (Personal Digital Assistant). In the case of bilinguals, two kinds of alphabets are written alternatively So the method of input character mode change must be provided, and this cause discomfort of writing. Our proposed written character patterns have some constraint but permit ANSI-Korean mixed writing without mode change keeping original form of alphabets and can be recognized with simple algorithm relatively. For ANSI character we analysis Graffiti and propose new writing pattern, which is more similar to original form. There are many researches about input method of unpacking Korean character and writing patterns. But they are not widely used because it's excessively contrary to original form of Korean characters. To show our proposed writing patterns usefulness, we studied the satisfaction and easiness of writing and the recognition rates. Writers are divided into two groups; PDA users, familiar to Graffiti, and others. The results satisfy usefulness in the both groups.

  • This study aims to analyze typographic expressions used in recent fashion trends from the perspective of conceptual art and thus identify a variety of meanings. Towards this end, theoretical considerations were made vis-à-vis the main concepts of research, such as typography and conceptual art, and the ready-made, documentation, intervention and language, which are the expressive features of conceptual art, were applied to fashion typography as analytical frameworks. The results are as follows. The ready-made appears in a way that borrows or transforms the visual identity of other brands, and documentation is utilized in a way that lays tautological or contradictory texts together. Intervention arises, while leading to more complex layers of meaning when borrowing the visual identity of the brand, which is conceptually irrelevant. The language is expressed as statements about contemporary social issues, such as environmental protection, ethical consumption and gender problems. Based on the findings of this study, it can be confirmed that in fashion design, typography serves as an effective marketing tool and a medium of social statements. Moreover, it can expand into the possibility of generating new meanings as a novel way of visual expression.

  • Street art operates within an already given visual order: the visuality of the modern city in which the regimentation of the image has become fully adaptive to-what Fredric Jameson termed-the logic of late capitalism. What is the relationship between street art and the hegemonic forms of the image dictated by the "city's rulers"? Does street art evoke an alternative kind of spectatorship? Can the unsolicited visual intervention in the life of the city open up an "optics" that resists the reifying patterns of the contemporary gaze? This paper follows Baudrillard's pioneering analysis of graffiti, arguing that the visuality of a certain kind of street images carries an important potential of challenging the hegemonic manner in which the contemporary image has come to dominate the field of vision.

  • Experiencing the vortex of postmodernism, modern graphic design has evolved radically from simple aesthetically-motivated style following modernism. Concurrently, Typography has transmuted into International Typography Style from Grid Standard, which was an outcome of modernism. Edward Fella is one of the most internationally prestigious figures practicing the contemporary graphic design style. He is currently pursuing his career as an educator by teaching graphic design and typography at Cal Arts. For a long time, Fella has devoted himself to yielding products of de-constructive presentations and constructing design identity based on aesthetics. This paper looks into aesthetic criteria which has affected modern graphic design, referring to graphism of Fella, an international graphic design and typography educator whose theoretical origins lie in French modern philosophy and aesthetics. Fella has created graphic works by making use of graphic motives residing in the unconscious and the subconscious. Therefore, his graphic style is viewed and investigated as de-constructive aesthetics in the paper. Drifting around toward the end of postmodernism, the present day defines itself as the age free of formality approaching uncertain future; however, Fella's typography graphically guides us to understand comprehensively not only how international graphic design flows from the present to the future, but its realizations in design works.

  • The hip-hop, which began with subculture of black people in Harlem, have changed variously in musical history after the times, which has become the culture phenomenon that had controlled dancing, fashion, and further consciousness of the new generation around the world in 1990s. Since Jean Patou first used Graffiti on clothing in 1920s, graffiti art has been expressed through various methods in many designers' works. The purpose of this study is to develop 'The Hip-Hop' clothing design which express major images in works of Jean-Michel Basquiat, a representative painter of Graffiti art in modern fashion. The concept is Jean Casual Look representing Young Street Culture. Breaking from existing strong legitimate hip-hop styles, clothing design expresses funny, healthy, comfortable, and active feelings. Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop program were used to design Hip-Hop clothing. With the result that the images on Basquiat's works applied to the hip-hop clothing design, it is suggested that the works of artists are worthy of practical use as factors of a high value-added design, which corresponds with collaboration appearing in modern design variously.
