The quantitative analyses and the mechanical interpretation of discontinuity planes are the most important factor for the study of strength and deformation properties of rock masses containing discontinuity planes. However, the relationship between the factors investigated in the field and the actual mechanical properties of discontinuity planes is not fully understood. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of density, length, and spacing of joints on elastic modulus of rock masses as these values vary. A new parameter which has a direct relation with the elastic modulus of discontinuity planes is also preposed in this study. The combination of finite element methods and homogenization methods has been used for the numerical analyses of a uintcell with discontinuity planes, which is generated using random-number generation methods. The elastic modulus of the discontinuity plane is found from the numerical analyses. The final results propose not only the relation between the investigation parameters of discontinuity planes and the elastic modulus of rock masses but also a new parameter, an effect area ratio having a linear relation with the elastic modulus of rock masses.
Prediction of damage caused by low-velocity impact in laminated composite plate is an important problem faced by designers using composites. Not only the inplane stresses but also the interlaminar normal and shear stresses playa role in estimating the damage caused. But it is well known that the conventional approach based on the homogenization has the limit in description of damage. The work reported here is an effort in getting better predictions of dynamic behavior and damage in composite plate using DNS approach. In the DNS model, we discretize the composite plates through separate modeling of fiber and matrix for the local microscopic analysis. In the view of microscopic mechanics with DNS model, interlaminar stress behaviors in the inside of composite materials are investigated and compared with the results of the homogenized model which has been used in the conventional approach to impact analysis. Also the multiscale model based on DNS concept is developed in order to enhance the effectiveness of impact analysis, and we present the results of multiscale analysis considering micro and macro structures simultaneously.
Cobalt-chromium alloys are used to fabricate various dental prostheses, and have advantages of low cost and excellent mechanical properties compared to other alloys. Recently, selective laser melting, which is an additive manufacturing method, has been used to overcome the disadvantages of the conventional fabrication method. A local rapid heating and cooling process of selective laser melting induces fine microstructures, grain refinement, and reduction of porosities of the alloys. Therefore, it can improve mechanical properties compared to the alloys fabricated by the conventional method. On the other hand, layering process and rapid heating and cooling cause accumulation of a large amount of residual stresses that can adversely affect the mechanical properties. A heat treatment for removing residual stresses through recovery and recrystallization process caused complicated changes in mechanical properties induced by phase transformation, precipitate and homogenization of the microstructures. The purpose of this review was to compare the manufacturing methods of Co-Cr alloys and to investigate the characteristics of Co-Cr alloys fabricated by selective laser melting.
Cullet Quality Control in auto glass bottle factory is the most important in recent days because of the increasing cost of materials in glass bottle. Since the composition of plate glass cullet is similar, the cullet quality using plate cullet in glass bottle factory is easily controlled. In addition to this, the price of plate glass cullet is so low that the cost reduction can be achieved. If the ratio of plate glass cullet and gush is over 25%, the liquidity of glass water become worse, which is caused by different compositions and viscosity of the components. As a results, Furnace bottom temperature becomes low and glass water becomes inhomogeneous. Thus production efficiency of glass bottle becomes low because of increasing devitrification in Dead Corner part in glass melting furnace. Three experimental methods – (1) increasing melting temperature, (2) using Booster, (3) using bubbler – were performed to increase the furnace bottom temperature and glass water homogeneity. The amounts of plate glass cullet was able to increase up to 90%, 70% and 60% without any devitrification using booster, bubbler and the method of glass melting temperature increase from $1480^{\circ}C$ to $1560^{\circ}C$ respectively. It is not possible to increase the glass melting temperature without the reduction of furnace operation time and the increase of fuel cost. The booster process has disadvantage of much electric energy consumption. Since the bubbler process uses physical convection of melting glass based on compression air, the homogeneity of molten glass is not so good as that of booster process but it can reduce the cost of glass bottle.

For the treatment of regulatory clearance of the soils, a procedure for the radionuclides and radioactivity concentration analysis is under development. A strategy for soil sampling including random sampling after homogenization and standardization was set up. Statistical representativeness is considered for not only sampling strategy but also sample size. In this study, designed sample size was designed with confidence interval and error bound of soil using the pilot samples which were taken following the sampling strategy.
It is important for the fabrication of nuclear cladding to optimize the microstructure, because the properties of Zr-based nuclear claddings such as mechanical properties, oxidation-resistance and corrosion- resistance vary widely with its microstructure. The microstructure in Zr-based alloy is strongly dependent on the solubility of alloying element. However, it is very difficult to measure the solubility due to the low solution limit of alloying elements in Zr-based alloy. In this study, Thermoelectric Power(TEP) measurements are used to determine the solubility of Nb in Zr-0.8Sn alloy, which is confirmed by optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The solutioning of Nb obtained by a homogenization treatment and water-quench leads to a decrease of TEP The saturation of TEP appears with the increase of homogenization temperature, which means the saturation of the Nb content in the matrix. From these results, the solubility ($C_{Nb}$) of Nb in Zr-0.8Sn with temperature could be expressed as fellow equation : $4.69097{\times}10^{16}{\times}e^{-25300\times\;I/T}$(ppm.at.%)
Piezoelectric composites have been widely used in broadband acoustic transducers because of their lower acoustic impedance and higher electro-mechanical coupling factor. However, their complex structure has placed many limitations on the design of various transducers. This paper suggests the methodology to substitute the 1-3 piezocomposites by a single-phased material that has properties equivalent to those of the piezocomposites. The resonant method and finite element analysis (FEA) are used to derive the equivalent properties that can accurately depict resonant properties at various vibration modes of the piezocomposites. Validity of the suggested method is confirmed by comparing frequency characteristics of fabricated 1-3 piezocomposite specimens and FEA models. Further, accuracy of the derived material constants is checked by applying the equivalent properties to FEA models of the single phase material for various resonant modes.
Lentinula edodes liquid spawn growth under explosive aeration (supplying air with tiny bubbles) and soybean meal addition to liquid culture medium were investigated in terms of mycelial growth and residual free sugar content. The two treatments were effective for homogeneous culturing of mycelial spawn and for separating colonies during multiplication after an exponential growth period without limiting sustaining nitrogen nutrients. The mycelial growth and carbon dioxide concentration were greatest on the 13th day since the inoculation. At 12th day, however, free sugars were almost depleted in the upper part of the liquid medium. Total nitrogen content within precipitated mycelia was the highest at the 13th day. Chitin and sucrose contents in the mycelia were the highest at the 18th day, but ergosterol content became highest at 22 days. These results suggest that Lentinula edodes liquid spawn is ready in 18 days after inoculation.
The development of strain localization within shear zones is frequently observed during soil deformation. In fact, the phenomenon appears to be more often the norm rather than the exception. Conceptually, any soil condition that renders negative work increment is prone to localization. In this study, a broad range of soil and loading conditions are investigated to test this criterion, including: dilative soil subjected to drained shear (standard case), contractive soil sheared under undrained conditions, cavitation in dilative soil in undrained shear, inhomogeneous soils, particle alignment in contractive soils made of platy particles, soils that experience particle crushing, and the shear of low-moisture and/or lightly cemented loose soils. Unique specimens and test procedures are designed to separately test each of these soil conditions in the laboratory According to experimental test results, soil specimens with post-peak strain softening behavior are prone to progressive failure, localization of deformations, and shear banding. The state of stress, the soil density, inherent mechanical and geometrical properties of soil particles, low water content, and heterogeneity can contribute to triggering strain localization. Considering all possible cases of localization, the best method to obtain the critical state line in the laboratory is to use contractive homogeneous specimens subjected to drained shear.
