  • Non-linear behavior of rock under compression can be predicted by a crack model. Crack growth in rock renders rock anisotropic. The degree of anisotropy is explained in terms of elastic moduli as a function of load level. In this study, we calculate the changes of elastic moduli due to crack growth numerically by using a crack model and compare these values with experimental results obtained from the measurement of ultrasonic wave velocities. Image processing technique is used to obtain the initial crack information needed for the numerical calculation of elastic moduli.

  • A generalized elastic solution for a transient mode III crack propagating along the gradient in functionally graded materials (FGMs) is obtained through an asymptotic analysis. The shear modulus and density of the FGMs are assumed to vary exponentially along the gradient. The stress and displacement fields near the crack tip are obtained in terms of powers of radial coordinates, and the coefficients depend on the time rates of the change of the crack tip speed and stress intensity factors. The influence of nonhomogeneity and transients on the higher order terms of the stress and displacement fields is discussed.

  • This study look into the mechanisms of growth and magnification of the cracks and delamination in the pre-cracked RC beams repaired with carbon fiber sheets. The experimental parameters were loading type, loading speed and crack. In the experiments, it was confirmed that a failure of beams began with development and propagation of the stepped delamination in the below the loading point due to the rapid change of shear force, but mechanisms of the failure were not influenced with loading type, loading speed and pre-cracks. Particularly, in the case of beams having the pre-cracks, growth of crack concentrated at the special crack below the loading point and led to failure of the beam by delamination due to magnification of crack.

Estimation of Empirical Fatigue Crack Propagation Model of AZ31 Magnesium Alloys under Different Specimen Thickness Conditions (AZ31 마그네슘합금의 시편두께 조건에 따른 실험적 피로균열전파모델 평가)

  • It is the primary aim of this paper to propose the empirical fatigue crack propagation model fit to describe a crack growth behavior of AZ31 magnesium alloys under the different specimen thickness conditions. The empirical models estimated are Paris-Erdogan model, Walker model, Forman model, and modified-Forman model. The parameters of each model are estimated by maximum likelihood method. The statistical crack growth data needed for an estimation of empirical models are obtained by fatigue crack propagation tests under the three cases of specimen thickness. It is found that the good empirical models fit to describe a crack growth behavior of AZ31 magnesium alloys under the different specimen thickness conditions are Paris-Erdogan model and Walker model. It is also verified that a fatigue crack growth rate exponent of a empirical model may be a material constant at the specimen thickness conditions of 4.75mm and 6.60mm.

  • The creep crack growth properties in 3.5NiCrMoV steel were investigated at $550^{\circ}C$ by using CT specimen under constant $C_t$ condition that was held during crack growth of 1mm distance. $C_t$ lely on load line displacement rate and $C^*$ usually increase with crack length though load is reduced in order to maintain constant $C_t$ value as crack growth. Fully coalesced area(FCA) ahead of crack tip tend to increase as $C_t$ increase to the critical value, and after that value FCA decrease. For the tertiary creep stage of crack growth test, the most of displacement is due to the steady state creep, except only small part due to the primary creep and other effects. Therefore, tests were mainly interrupted in the tertiary stage to obtain high value of $C_t$. At constant load and $C_t$ region, crack growth slope was 0.900 and 0.844 each, on the other hand $C^*$ slope was 0.480.

  • It is useful way to make indentations near crack tip in order to increase fatigue life or repair a fatigue crack. In this study, bending fatigue tests were performed to investigate the optimal position of the indentations near crack tip. The results shows that fatigue life of the specimen is dramatically increased by indentation and the most effective location is the back of the crack tip.

  • The crack growth under creep condition is one of the major damage mechanisms which determines remaining life of the component operating at high temperatures. In this paper, the creep crack growth by grain boundary cavitation is studied, which is frequently observed failure mechanism for creep brittle materials. As a result of diffusive growth of creep cavities, it is shown that the crack-tip stress field is modified from the original stress distribution by the amount of singularity attenuation parameter which is function of crack growth rate and material properties. Also, the stress relaxation at crack-tip results in the extension of cavitating area by the load dump effect to meet the macroscopic force equilibrium conditdion.

Effect of Nitriding on Fatigue Crack Initiation and Growth Rate in SNCM (SNCM강의 피로균열의 발생 및 전파속도에 미치는 질화처리의 영향)

  • Effect of nitriding on fatigue crack initiation and growth rate has been studied on SNCM. Specimens were nitrided for 15 hr at $860^{\circ}C$. The fatigue limit of nitrided specimens was superior to that of annealed($860^{\circ}C$, 15 hr) specimens. Based on detailed observations of slip band and micro crack initiation, it is concluded that the excellent fatigue limit of nitrided specimens is attributed to improved slip initiation resistance by nitriding. The characteristic of fatigue crack growth rate of nitrided specimens was investigated and compared with those of annealed specimens. It was found that by nitriding the crack growth rate was markedly decreased and the threshold stress intensity factor range was improved. It is concluded that the excellent fatigue limit of nitrided specimens is also attributed to improved fatigue crack growth rate and threshold stress intensity factor range by nitriding.

탄소와 질소 함량 변화에 따른 type 347 스테인리스강의 피로균열거동 연구

  • 오스테나이트 스테인리스강은 우수한 내식성 및 기계적 특성으로 인해 구조용 재료로 널리 사용되고 있다. 표준원전 경수로의 경우 가압기 밀림관소재로 Nb 안정화 오스테나이트 스테인리스강인 type 347 스테인리스강이 사용되고 있다. 그러나 원전배관에서는 운전중 배관내 온도편차에 의한 열응역과 하중변화에 의한 기계적하중에 의해 피로손상을 받는다. 일반적으로 범용 오스테나이트 스테인리스강(AISI 304, 316)의 피로균열 성장거동에 대한 연구결과는 국내외적으로 다수 축적되어 있으나 type 347 탄소, 질소 함량에 따른 기계적 특성 및 피로균열성장 연구는 매우 미비하다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 탄소와 질소의 함량에 따른 기계적거동을 평가하고, 이에 따른 피로균열전파속도를 관찰하여 스테인리스강의 정확한 피로균열전파속도 곡선을 제시하고자 한다. 실험에 사용된 시편은 두께 5mm, 폭 25.4mm CT시편을 사용하였으며, 1mm의 예비균열을 주었다. 그리고 실험온도는 상온과 원전가동온도인 $316^{\circ}C$에서 실시하였으며, 주파수는 10Hz를 주었다. 실험결과 각 함량에 따른 type 347의 미세조직 관찰결과 기지내에 압연방향을 따라 조대한 석출물의 흐름이 관찰되었으며, 크기나 분포가 큰 차이를 보였다. C+N 함량이 낮은 시편은 주로 $0.1\;{\mu}m$ 이하의 미세한 입자들이 오스테나이트 기지조직의 입내와 입계에 고르게 분포되어 있었다. 그러나 C+N 함량이 높은 시편의 경우에는 $0.1\;{\mu}m$ 이하의 미세한 입자들과 함께 국부적으로 $1\sim10\;{\mu}m$의 조대한 입자들이 분포하고 있는 것이 관찰되었다. 그리고 질소의 함량이 높아짐에 따라 인장강도는 증가하였으며, 피로시험결과 고온에서 실험한 피로균열성장률 곡선이 상온보다 높게 나타남을 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고 질소가 적게 첨가되고 탄소의 함량이 많을수록 피로균열성장률은 ASME 곡선보다 낮게 나타났다.
