  • Three diatom assemblage zones were erected from HMB-103 core sediment of the Heuksan Mud Belt. The paleoenvironmental changes were reconstructed basing on diatom analyses using indicator species, cold and warm water species, and salinity. Seventy-six species belonging to 41 genera were identified in the core sediments. The number of diatom valves per gram of dry sediment ranged from 0.1 to $15.4{\times}10^4g^{-1}$. As a result, diatom assemblage I in about 45,000 yr B.P showed a high abundance in cold species indicating a major influence by the Korea Coastal Current. Diatom assemblage II from 14,000 to 11,646 yr B.P is characterized by rare abundance and indicative of the cold periods at Younger Dryas with the lower sea-level. However, diatom assemblage III from 11,646 yr B.P to Holocene was more affected by the Yellow Sea Warm Current while the progressive sea level rise.

  • Diatoms were studied from the trench sediments around Bangudae petroglyphs in order to better understand the depositional environment before and after the construction of Sayeon dam in Ulsan. There were no diatoms produced from the sediments before the dam construction while the diatoms were produced from the sediments (depth of trench 228 cm) after the construction of the dam. Seventy-five species of diatoms of 27 genera were identified in the trench sediments. The number of diatom valves per gram of dry sediment ranged from $0.2-5.8{\times}10^5g^{-1}$. Four diatom assemblage zones were identified according to the frequency of critical taxa as follows: assemblage zone I, from 228 to 150 cm; assemblage zone II, from 150 to 122 cm; assemblage zone III, from 122 to 62 cm; and assemblage zone IV, from 62 to 0 cm. In addition, based on the environmental indicator species, an analysis was carried out to measure eutrophication, acidity and $Cl^-$ value. Results of the eutrophication and $Cl^-$ values were as follows. Based on the lower 74 cm horizons, the degree of eutrophication middle-high to $Cl^-$ values were lower, upper horizons appeared to eutrophication in the low, and $Cl^-$ values were high. Acidification from low horizons of 122 cm showed a neutral-alkaline degree whereas it exhibited acid in the upper part. In particular, regarding nutrients (TP and TN), the index taxa showed a higher TP value at 175 cm while higher TN value at 62 cm.

  • In this study, we analyzed diatoms from core RS15-GC41 collected in Iselin Bank, Ross Sea. A total of 24 genera and 35 species of diatoms are identified, and the having valve abundance of diatoms varies from 0.2 to 28.6×106/g. Four diatom assemblage zones are established by the vertical distribution of diatoms, and changed with a cycle of 100 kyrs. RS15-GC41 were deposited over the last 400 kyrs (corresponding to Marine Isotope Stages 1-11). The open-water species Fragilariopsis kerguelensis, Rhizosolenia styliformis, and Thalassionema nitzschioides abundantly occurred in interglacial periods. Whereas, Actinocyclus actinochilus abundantly dominant during the glacial periods. The distribution of these diatoms indicated, it can be seen that the sea-ice extent was larger and lasted longer during MIS 7, 9, and 11 than that of MIS 1, 3, and 5. Moreover, Paralia sulcata was abundantly predominant in MIS 7, 9, and 11; this finding suggests likely indicating that P. sulcata was transported from the coastal/inner shelf area to the study site, during accumulated in the sediments, reworked with the influx of ice-rafted debris by the currents

  • The sedimentary environments and biostratigrapy of the tidal sediments off the Mankyung-Dongjin River estuary were studied based on sedimentary facies and diatom assemblage analysis. Sediment facies from the five vibracores are mainly clay, silt, and sand facies. The clay and silty sediment facies are more dominant than the sandy facies, and contain diatom frustules. The frequency of the diatom frustules are rate to common, but not found in sandy sediment facies. Bigeneric structures such as burrow and non-bigeneric primary sedimentary structures such as laminated sand and mud or silt and mud couplets, flaser bedding, ripple-cross lamination are found in several stratigraphic levels of the sedimentary sequences. A total of 219 species and varieties, belonging to 61 genera has been identified in the present study. Among them, paralia sulcata is the most abundant species about 30 to 50% of the total diatom frustules. Another predominant species are Cyclotella striata. Thalassionema nitzschioides. Actinoptychus undulatus. Delphineis surirella, Raphoneis amphiceros. Most of the diatoms occurred in this study area are marine, marine-brackish water, and brackish water species, and are benthic and tychopelagic or meroplanktonic species. Also, most of the species are coastal to littoral and littoral to inner neritic species. The occurrences of freshwater species, about 1 to 5% is higher than that of the Namyang Bay tidal sediments. The ecological properties of the diatoms occurred in the study area and primary sedimentary structure such as flaser bedding ripple cross bedding indicate that the deposits are formed under coastal or littoral to subeditorial environments such as tidal zone which was subjected to the influenced of stream water and was more strongly influenced by temperate to warm water than cold water. The sedimentary environments have not been changed distinctively during the time of deposition. The vertical distribution pattern of diatoms in the study area is studied by Q-mode cluster Analysis using spss/pc+ (ver.4.0). The results show that the three cores (GE-3, GE-11, GE-12) are divided into two diatom assemblages, respectively. Biostratigraphic correlation using the data of Q-mode Cluster Analysis are attempt in this study.

  • Based on the result that biological control agent (BCA) increased the dissolved microcystin-LR in a field experiment to control the cyanobacterial bloom (Kim etal., 2005), a laboratory experiment was used to evaluate the effects of dissolved microcystin-LR (MCLR) with different concentrations on abundance, dominance, diversity of phytoplankton community, concentration of chlorophyll a and microcystin concentration in replicated microcosms. The treatments in this laboratory experiment comprised different concentrations of T1 (natural MCLR concentration), T10 (ten times to natural MCLR concentration), and T100 (one hundred times to natural MCLR concentration). MCLR treatment of exclusively Stephanodiscus hantzschii-dominated community in Chonho bridge hardly changed in algal species, but abundance. In Kildong pond, Aulacoseira and Dinobryonrich community was replaced by green algae Scenedesmus-rich community especially in T100 experiment. However, in Yangsoori-Ryukgakji Pond having the highest concentration of initial MCLR, Microcystis aeruginosa was decreased in abundance. Therefore, the treatment of BCA to control M. aeruginosa severely changed the Phytoplankton community in term of algal species, abundance (chlorophyll a) and dissolved microcystin-LR via a high release of MCLR.

  • We conducted the algicidal activity screening tests using 10 L microcosm to investigate the possibility of the field application of naphthoquinone derivative Nq 4-6 compound as an algicide. We determined its application range to assess its algicidal effects on the phytoplankton and to evaluate the response of the planktonic community and the water environment to this chemical. From results of the microcosm experiments, Nq 4-6 compound showed high algicidal activity on the centric diatoms such as Stephanodiscus hantzschii and Cyclotella meneghiniana, but it had no effect on other phytoplankton. The abundance of S. hantzschii continuously increased in the control, but its cell density decreased 1 day after the Nq 4-6 treatment. In particular, Nq 4-6 showed algicidal activity of 94.4% against S. hantzschii 7 days after the treatment. The dominance index of phytoplankton community was lower in the treatment than in the control. The diversity index, richness index and evenness index of phytoplankton community was higher in the treatment. Environmental factors and biological factors did not show specific changes after the Nq 4-6 compound treatment. Therefore, the results of this study demonstrates that Nq 4-6 is an effective agent for the control of S. hantzschii blooms, and that the microcosm tests play a crucial role when assessing field application.

  • We conducted the weekly monitoring (December 2012~April 2013) to evaluate the temporal variation and identification of Stephanodiscus spp. that are generally dominant during winter in the Yeongsan River. Phytoplankton species were identified and counted using the optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Phytoplankton in the river were grouped into 6 classes (bacillariophyceae, chlorophyceae, cryptophyceae, cyanophyceae, dinophyceae, euglenophyceae), 30 genus and 41 species. Phytoplankton composition showed high abundance of diatoms in winter and Aulacoseira sp., Cyclotella sp. and Stephanodiscus spp. were dominant. Among the species, Stephanodiscus spp. was relatively abundant compared to other diatom species. Stephanodiscus spp. appeared from December 2012 to April 2013 and their abundance peaked in January. Abundance of diatoms especially peaked ($21,080cells\;mL^{-1}$) in January 15, 2013 when Stephanodiscus spp. also bloomed ($20,560cells\;mL^{-1}$). The abundances of Stephanodiscus spp. were gradually decreased from March and reached as low as $60cells\;mL^{-1}$ in April 26. Cyclostephanos (C. invisitatus), Cyclotella (C. meneghiniana), Discostella (D. pseudostelligera, D. woltereckii) and Stephanodiscus (S. hantzschii, S. minutulus, S. parvus) were classified in the circular diatoms. Abundance of S. hantzschii was extremely high compared to S. minutulus and S. parvus.

  • Field survey on the spatio-temporal distribution of water quality and chlorophyll a concentration, and the environmental factors on the variation of phytoplankton biomass were carried out at the 23 stations for four seasons in the Shiahae, southwestern coast of Korean Peninsula from February to October in 1995. I made an analysis on biological factor as chlorophyll a concentration as well as environmental factors such as water temperature, salinity and nutrients; ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, dissolved inorganic nitrogen, phosphate, N/P ratio, silicate and Si/P ratio. The waters in the Shiahae were not stratified due to the tidal mixing and high velocity of tidal current. And the high productivity in photic layer were supported by high nutrients concentration from freshwater on lands and bottom waters The low depth of transparency in the Shiahae had a bad influence upon primary production and marine biology. In Shiahae had a sufficient nutrients for primary production during a year. Especially dissolved inorganic nitrogen and silicate were high, the other side, phosphate was low. The source of nutrients in summer and silicate supply depend on input of freshwater from lands, the other side, dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphate were depend on rather supplied from bottom layer by the mixing and input of seawater from outside than input of freshwater from lands. Phosphate seemed to become a limiting nutrient for the primary production at all area of Shiahae in winter and at the northern parts in other seasons. However, dissolved inorganic nitrogen seemed to do it at the southern parts in other seasons except winter. Silicate didn't become a limiting nutrient for diatoms in Shiahae. Phytoplankton biomass as measured by chlorophyll a concentration was very high all the year round, it was controlled by the combination of the several environmental factors, especially of nitrogen, phosphorus and the physical factors such as light intensity.
