It has been well known that concrete structures exposed to acid and sulfate environments such as sewer, sewage and wastewater, soil, groundwater, and seawater etc. show significant decrease in their durability due to chemical attack. Such deleterious acid and sulfate attacks lead to expansion and cracking in concrete, and thus, eventually result in damage to concrete matrix by forming expansive hydration products due to the reaction between portland cement hydration products and acid and sulfate ions. Objectives of this experimental research are to investigate the effect of mineral admixtures on the resistance to acid and sulfate attack in concrete and to suggest high-resistance concrete mix against acid and sulfate attack. For this purpose, concretes specimens with three types of cement (ordinary portland cement (OPC), binary blended cement (BBC), and ternary blended cement (TBC) composed of different types and proportions of admixtures) were prepared at water-biner ratios of 32% and 43%. The concrete specimens were immersed in fresh water, 5% sulfuric acid, 10% sodium sulfate, and 10% magnesium sulfate solutions for 28, 56, 91, 182, and 365 days, respectively. To evaluate the resistance to acid and sulfate for concrete specimens, visual appearance changes were observed and compressive strength ratios and mass change ratios were measured. It was observed from the test results that the resistance against sulfuric acid and sodium sulfate solutions of the concretes containing mineral admixtures were much better than that of OPC concrete, but in the case of magnesium sulfate solution the concretes containing mineral admixtures was less resistant than OPC concrete due to formation of magnesium silicate hydrate (M-S-H) which is non-cementitious.
This study was conducted as the basic research for the replacement of Blast Furnace Slag, Red Mud, Silica Fume, etc., with cement as a solution to the problems arising from the global warming caused by the generation of $CO_2$, and conducted the experimental review to examine the feasibility of matrix having properties identical to those of cement by using the Blast Furnace slag, Red mud, Silica fume, and alkali-activator. For this, by using the the inorganic binder, such as Blast Furnace Slag, Red Mud, Silica Fume, etc., and NaOH, $Na_2SiO_3$ and others as the cement substitute material, the strength characteristic according to the mixture time variation was performed in the tentative experiment. Based on the preceding experiment, this study performed the experiment to analyze the strength properties of hardener through the curing by air-dry temperature, curing by temperature in water, coating curing, and Korean paper curing. For the water curing at $80^{\circ}C$, the compressive strength and flexural strength were found to be the most excellent at the age of the 28th day, and furthermore, it was found that the non-cement hardener could be made, which is considered to affect the production of eco-friendly concrete.

The purpose of this study is to understand a compressive strength and propose a dry shrinkage strain equation being able to predict dry shrinkage of alkali-activated materials(AAM) mortar samples manufactured using fly-ash(FA) and ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBFS). The main parameters investigated were the GGBFS replace ratios(30, 50, 70 and 100%) and sodium silicate modules(Ms[$SiO_2/Na_2O$] 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0). The compressive strength of AAM increased with increases GGBFS replace ratios or Ms contents. The dry shrinkage strain of AAM decreased with increases Ms contents. But, the dry shrinkage strain of AAM increased as the GGBFS replace ratio increases. Therefore, the GGBFS replace ratio seems to have very significant and important consequences for the mix design of the AAM mortar. The results indicated the R-square of single regression analysis based on each mix properties was the highest value; 0.7539~0.9786(average 0.9359). And the presumption equation of dry shrinkage strain with all variables(GGBFS, Ms and material age) has higher accuracy and its R-square was 0.8020 at initial curing temperature 23 degrees Celsius and 0.8018 at initial curuing temperature 70 degrees Celsius.
In this research, the possibility of using bottom ash as a binder for the alkali-activated cement mortar is studied. Several experiments were performed to investigate the variation of the material properties according to the mix proportion. In the experimental program, the flowability and compressive strength were evaluated for various values of water/ash ratio, activator/ash ratio, sodium silicate to sodium hydroxide ratio, curing temperature, and the fineness of bottom ash as the main variables. The experimental results showed that high strength of 40 MPa or greater could be achieved in $60^{\circ}C$ high temperature curing condition with proper flowability. For $20^{\circ}C$ ambient temperature curing, the 28 days compressive strength of approximately 30MPa could be obtained although the early-age strength development was very slow. Based on the results, the range of optimized mix design of bottom-ash based alkali-activated cement mortar was suggested. In addition, using the artificial neural network analysis, the flowability and compressive strength were predicted with the difference in the mix proportion of the bottom-ash based alkali-activated cement mortar.

The present study tested 5 concrete mixes to develop reliable mixing proportions for the sustainable alkali-activated(AA) foamed concrete as a thermal insulation material for the floor heating system of buildings. The AA binder used was composed of 73.5% ground granulated blast-furnace slag, 15% fly ash, 5% calcium hydroxide, and 6.5% sodium silicate. As a main variable, the unit binder content varied from $325kg/m^3$ to $425kg/m^3$ at a space of $25kg/m^3$. The test results revealed that AA foamed concrete has considerable potential for practical applications when the unit binder content is close to $375kg/m^3$, which achieves the minimum quality requirements specified in KS F 4039 and ensures economic efficiency. In addition, lifecycle assessment demonstrated the reduction in the environmental impact profiles of all specimens relative to typical ordinary portland cement foamed concrete as follows: 99% for photochemical oxidation potential, 87~89% for global warming potential, 78~82% for abiotic depletion, and 70~75% for both acidification potential and human toxicity.
Recently, various environmentally friendly products have been developed for improving the indoor air quality while pursuing a well-being nature-friendly healthy life as a core value. In this research, we not only solve the problems of existing environmentally friendly paints, but also developed a charcoal composite seats that can reduce radon, which is a natural radioactive substance, and evaluated the reduction effect of radon, formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds. In the charcoal composite seats, a sodium silicate emulsion and charcoal were mixed to prepare an charcoal liquid coating material, and the composite seats was fabricated by air-spray coating method. In order to analyze the hazardous substance reduction performance of the fabricated charcoal composite seats, radon was designed to comply with the Ministry of the Environment standard, formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds were designed to comply with KCL-FIR-1085 standard. As a result of the experiment, the fabricated charcoal composite seats was evaluated as having a radon reduction capability of about 90.8% from 20 hours, formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds were 3 hours, and the reduction capability of 96.7% and 96.6% was found respectively. It is considered that these results can be utilized as basic data at the time of product development for improvement of indoor air quality.
The paper presented investigates the effects of kaolinite on strength properties of alkali-activated multi-component cement. The binders of this study was blended of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), fly ash (FA), silica fume (SF) and kaolinite (KA). In this study, the specimens of combination of 20%~70% GGBFS, 10%~60% FA, 10% SF (constant ratio) and 10%~50% KA binder were used for strength properties tests. The water/binder ratio was 0.5. The binders (GGBFS + FA + SF + KA) was activated by sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium silicate ($Na_2SiO_3$) was 10% by total binder weight (10% NaOH + 10% $Na_2SiO_3$). The research carried out is on the compressive strength, water absorption, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The compressive strength decreased as the contents of KA increase. One of the major reason for this is the low reactivity of KA compared with other raw materials used as precursors such as GGBFS or FA. The presence of remaining KA indicates that the initially used quantity has not fully reacted during hydration. Moreover, the results have indicated that increased of KA contents decreased UPV under all experimental conditions. The drying shrinkage and water absorption increased as the content of KA increase. Test result clearly showed that the strength development of multi-component blended cement were significantly dependent on the content of KA and GGBFS.
Composite materials were prepared by impregnating water glass into the wood, followed by soaking in solutions of boric acid or phosphoric acid. The effects of these treatments on the physical and mechanical properties of the specimens and especially on its heat resistance were investigated. 1) Weight Percent Gain (WPG)s increased with increase of concentrations of water glass. However, there was little relationship between treatment temperatures and WPG. Generally, WPGs of double treated specimens were higher than single treated ones. 2) Percent shrinkages in each directions of the specimens treated with water glass had higher value than other specimens. Percent shrinkages of the specimens treated with boric acid or phosphoric acid were decreased as compared with untreated specimen. However, the specimens treated with water glass or phosphoric acid showed very high hygroscopicity. 3) The bending strengths of all specimens treated inorganic substances were slightly decreased. However, the values of compressive strength and hardness of most specimens treated with inorganic substances increased or similar to that of untreated specimen except for a phosphoric acid treated specimens. 4) The specimens had good heat resistance. Weight losses of all specimens treated inorganic substances were about 50~70%. In particular, the specimens treated at $300^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$ almost kept their shapes.
This paper presents an investigation of the mechanical and microstructural properties on hardened samples that were synthesized using blended binder(fly ash(FA) and blast furnace slag cement(BFSC)), alkali activator and sea water or distilled water. Binders were prepared by mixing the FA and BFSC in different blend weight ratios of 6:4, 7:3 and 8:2. Sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate were used 5 wt% of binder, respectively, as an alkaline activator. The compressive strength and absorption were measured at the age of 3, 7 and 28 days, and the XRD, TGA and MIP tests were performed at the age of 28 days. An increase in the content of BFSC leads to an increase in the quantities of ettringite and C-S-H formed, regardless of the type of mixing water. And it also shows higher strength due to the reduction of pores larger than ~50 nm. All hardened samples in this study have common hydration products of C-S-H, $Ca(OH)_2$ and calcite. Hydrocalumite of all reaction products formed was only present in hardened sample mixed with sea water. For each FA/BFSC mixing ratio, the compressive strength of hardened sample mixed with sea water was similar to that mixed with distilled water. It is proposed that the slight increase of strength of samples mixed with sea water is mainly due to the presence of hydrocalumite phase containing chlorine ion, contributing to the change of total porosity and pore size distribution in samples.
Six alkali-activated (AA) concrete mixes were tested to explore the significance and limitations of developing an environmental friendly concrete. Ground granulated blast-furnace slag and powder typed sodium silicate were selected as source material and an alkaline activator, respectively. The main parameter investigated was the replacement level of lightweight fine aggregate to the natural sand. Workability and mechanical properties of lightweight AA concrete were measured: the variation of slump with time, the rate of compressive strength development, the splitting tensile strength, the moduli of rupture and elasticity, the stress-strain relationship, the bond resistance and shrinkage strain. Test results showed that the compressive strength of lightweight AA concrete sharply decreased when the replacement level of lightweight fine aggregate exceeded 30%. In particular, the increase in the discontinuous grading of lightweight aggregate resulted in the deterioration of the mechanical properties of concrete tested. The measured properties of lightweight AA concrete were also compared, wherever possible, with the results obtained from the design equations specified in ACI 318-05 or EC 2, depending on the relevance, and the results predicted from the empirical equations proposed by Slate et al. for lightweight ordinary Portland cement concrete. The stress-strain curves of different concrete were compared with predictions obtained from the mathematical model proposed by Tasnimi. The measured mechanical properties of lightweight AA concrete generally showed little agreement with the predictions obtained from these equations.
