  • Painful, ulcerative lesions of various systemic disease can affect the oral mucosa membrane at first. If you don't consider the skin lesion, followed or accompanied by oral mucosa, you are likely to fail in differential diagnosis. In this cases, we introduced erythema multiforme and Stevens-Johnson syndrome(SJS) patients with painful, ulcerative lesions on oral mucosa and skin. Also we review oral mucosal diseases come with the skin lesions.

  • Present study was carried out for development of a new supplementary product with gastroprotective effect. Natural Products mentioned that have GI protective property in Dongeuibogam and reports were evaluated anti-bacterial activity against Helicobacter pylori, then five heres were selected. The material used for the test were water extract of Alpinia oxyphlla (AO), Astragalus membranaceus (AM), Cinnamomum loureirii(CL), Citrus aurantium(CA), Amomum villosum(AV). They were tested individually on HCI ethanol-induced gastric lesion in rats, AV CL, AO showed the most significant effectiveness, respectively. Then two mixture different in their content ratio (P020701-1,-2) and complex with P020701-1 (CP) were made, and tested on HCI·ethanol, indomethacin-induced gastric lesion, aspirin-ligature, Shay ulcer and gastric secretion. P020701-1, -2 and CP showed significant effect on HCI ethanol, indomethacin-induced gastric lesion, and Shay ulcer. It can be regarded that the antigasuitic and anti-ulcerative effects of P020701- 1, -2 and CP are originated from reduction of total acid output identified by gastric secretion test.

  • 'Shiranuhi' citrus cultivar bred by crossing 'Kiyomi' tangor and 'Nakano No.3' ponkan is cultivated in polyethylene film house, and the number of cultivating farmers is rapidly increasing in recent years. Recently, some diseases are taking place on 'Shiranuhi' fruit in some orchards, and were to be big problem in some case. It was surveyed that six diseases were mainly taken place in 'Shiranuhi' cultivating orchards in Jeju Island. They were Phytophthora citrophthora, Alternaria sp., Penicillium digitatum, Botrytis cinerea, Diaporthe citri and Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri.

  • Polymicrobial nature of diabetic foot infection has been well documented in the literature. Initial antibiotic therapy of diabetic foot infection is usually empiric until reliable culture data is shown. This study was carried out to determine the common bacteriological flora of diabetic foot infection and antimicrobial sensitivity pattern in order to enhance possible empiric treatment. The specimens were obtained from wounds of 207 cases of diabetic foot ulcer, and the bacteriological isolation, and antimicrobial susceptibility tests of the isolates were carried out by standard microbiological methods. Staphylococcus aureus was the most common isolate, with 46.2% of recover rate among total bacterial isolated cases. Among gram-negative organisms, Pseudomonas aeruginosa was most common. Gram-positive organisms showed significant susceptibility to clindamycin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, and levofloxacin, besides vancomycin. Cefoperazone, piperacillin/tazobactam, and amikacin in addition to imipenem were most effective agents compared to gram-negative organisms. Diabetic foot infection requires use of combined antimicrobial therapy for initial management. Our results indicate that the most effective antibiotic combination for diabetic foot infection of Korean patients is clindamycin plus cefoperazone.

  • Bacterial diseases such as bacterial canker and bacterial leaf spot and fungal diseases such as gray mold, powdery mildew, side rot and leaf spots are major diseases damaging leaves of kiwifruit in Korea. In this review, we summarize symptoms and epidemiological characteristics of the major bacterial and fungal leaf diseases of kiwifruit and propose proper control methods of the diseases that can be practically utilized at the farmers' kiwifruit orchards in order to prevent the diseases on the basis of our research works and field experiences and important research products conducted during the last three decades in the world.

  • This study was designed to evaluate the effects of Korean medicine therapy(Banhasasim-tang) on a peptic ulcer patient. Three peptic ulcer patients with symptoms of epigastric pain, heartburn and nausea, were treated with Banhasasim-tang. The progress was evaluated with the Visual analogue scale. In all three cases, after 3 weeks of treatment with Banhasasim-tang, the patient's symptom of epigastric pain, heartburn and nausea evaluated with the Visual analogue scale improved. This study suggests that Korean medicine(Banhasasim-tang) could be effective in the treatment of peptic ulcer.

  • Aortoesophageal fistula that causes massive bleeding from the esophagus is a rare and fatal disease. The most common cause of aortoesophageal fistula is an aortic aneurysm, and the other causes are inflammatory disease and neoplasm. The treatment of choice for aortoesophageal fistula is surgery, and this surgery carries a high rate of mortality and morbidity. Stent-graft treatment is now being applied for this malady. Herein we report on a case of primary aortoesophageal fistula that was treated with primary repair of the fistula openings, and we include a review of the relevant literature.

  • Although disseminated cryptococcosis occurs most commonly in immunocompromised patients, particularly those with a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, it can occur in immune competent persons. There are no case reports of disseminated cutaneous crytpcoccosis associated with pulmonary tuberculosis in Korea. A 71-year-old female presented with fever and multiple cutaneous nodules. She was finally diagnosed with disseminated cutaneous cryptococcosis accompanied by pulmonary tuberculosis, and was treated successfully with anti-tuberculous medication and fluconazole. She had no apparent predisposing conditions for systemic cryptococcosis. We report this case with a review of the relevant literature.

  • Foot ulceration results in substantial morbidity in patients with peripheral neuropathy. The purpose of this study was to find the relationship of plantar foot pressures during walking to plantar ulceration in patients with Hansen's disease. The subjects were recuruited from two Welfare Clinic for Hansen's disease in Wonju and Uiwang city. Ten subjects (5 females, 5 males) with plantar ulceration and a mean age of 63 years were evaluated in this study. The mean duration of Hansen's disease in these subjects was 30 years. Plantar pressures were measured during self-selected comfortable walking speed by using MatScan system. Three subjects had plantar ulceration under the first metatarsal head. Five subjects had plantar ulceration under the second and third metatarsal head. Two subjects had plantar ulcers under the fifth metatarsal head. Eight of 10 subjects had plantar ulceration at highest pressure point that measured during walking. This result suggests that the abnormal high plantar pressure could be related factor to plantar ulceration in patients with Hansen's disease. Also the foot pressure measurement may be useful to evaluate the risk of plantar ulceration in patients with Hansen's disease.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify factors related to the quality of life of patients with ulcerative colitis. Methods: A total 116 patients with ulcerative colitis were asked on general characteristics, illness-related characteristics, depression, and quality of life. The collected data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: As for depression the 81.03% were normal, the 8.62% were mild depression, the 6.90% were moderated depression, and the 3.45% were severe. As for quality of life, the social functions was highest, followed by intestine-related symptoms, systemic symptoms, and emotional functions. Quality of life was positively correlated to subjective health status, age, and body mass index, and negatively to depression. Main factors affecting the quality of life included depression, subjective health status, physician's global assessment, age, days of loss in social life, and present abdominal pain. Conclusion: Physical and psychosocial health problems related to ulcerative colitis affected the quality of life of the patients. Further research is warranted for developing educational programs and psychosocial strategies in order to efficiently handle the illness.
