  • The ultimate bending moment of ships is one of the principle strength considered in ship design. Several methods have been proposed to predict the ultimate bending moment and its major part is, in general, predicting the ultimate compressive strength of stiffened panels. In this paper, made is the review on the methods and formulae of predicting the ultimate compressive strength and they are applied to predicting the ultimate bending moment. Safely levels of three bulk carriers have been derived evaluated for two loading conditions, stray, light ship condition and full load condition, and wave bending by Classification Society Rule(ABS, DnV and Lloyd Rule). The present reliability analysis problem is strictly non-linear and the Advanced First-Order Reliability Method has been used. From the results of parametric studies, the methods of predicting the ultimate compressive strength of stiffened panels are compared from the view point of their applicability to the reliability assessment of ships structures. The paper ends wish a brief discussion drawn from the parametric studies and the extension of the study is described.

  • In this study, a fatigue assessment method for vehicle suspension systems having welded geometries was established under a bending loading condition. For the fatigue life estimation of the actual product's welded joints made of different steels, bending fatigue tests were performed on welded specimens with a simplified shape for obtaining the moment-fatigue-life plot. Further, geometry modeling of the simplified welded specimens was conducted. Results of finite element analysis were used to obtain the stress-fatigue-life plot. The analysis results were also used to calculate the stress concentration factors for notch-factor-based fatigue life estimation. The test results were compared with results of the general notch-factor-based fatigue life estimation for improving fatigue assessment. As a result, it was concluded that both the welded fatigue tests and the notch-factor-based fatigue life estimation are necessary for accurate fatigue assessment.

  • In this paper. the Joint reaction forces in the suspension system of a passenger car are determined to calculate the deflections and stresses in the damper strut. A mathematical model of the Roll Stabilizer Bar(RSB) is developed to include the RSB forces in the dynamics analysis. Using these RSB forces, the variations of the damper forces and spring forces due to the wheel strokes are determined in a McPherson strut suspension. The graphs of shear force diagram, bending moment diagram, bending stress and deflections are drawn by the calculated joint reaction forces.

  • This paper explores an implementation of finite element analysis and experiment in the design process of a tape spring hinge used for various CubeSat missions. Tape spring hinges consist of short-length hardened-steel strips with one-sided curvature, and thus the behavior is subject to large deformation with unpredicted non-linearity. Precise dimensions of a commercial tape spring are traced by the use of high-resolution digital camera, and thin-shell FEM analysis is conducted using ABAQUS program. Based on the rotation-moment analysis suggested in previous studies, parametric analysis is conducted by adjusting the contributing factors such as strip thickness and the subtended angle of the cross section. Finally the behaviors are investigated by both analytical and non-linear finite element methods, and the results are compared with the simple measurements. Further studies suggest a possible application in dynamic characteristics of hinges during CubeSat operations.

  • In this paper, unified requirements of IACS on longitudinal strength of ships are investigated using nonlinear wave loads analyses under short term irregular waves. Also, analyses on IACS wave data were carried out for the purpose of presenting the guideline for future use. While keeping theoretical consistensy, the rule requirements for horizontal shear force, bending moment and torsional moment are newly proposed for the ships of large deck openings bases on the calculation results for 17 sample ships. The requirements for side shell hydrodynamic pressure are also presented. All the calculated results are compared with other Societies and present KR rules. These formula will be checked when corresponding requirements of structural scantling are determined.

  • Global strength check for TLP tendon body can be estimated based on maximum tendon tensions and bending moments, which are resulted in TLP global performance analysis. Final tendon length, especially thread length on Length Adjustment Joint, is easily calculated with water depth at TLP in-place location, TLP lock-off draft and unlocking length of tendon bottom section. And LAJ thread length, which is locked with TLP top tendon connector, should be carefully determined with tendon design and installation tolerances.

  • This study presents a probabilistic time series forecast of ship structural response using Bayesian inference combined with Volterra linear model. The structural response of a ship exposed to irregular wave excitation was represented by a linear Volterra model and unknown uncertainties were taken care by probability distribution of time series. To achieve the goal, Volterra series of first order was expanded to a linear combination of Laguerre functions and the probability distribution of Laguerre coefficients is estimated using the prepared data by treating Laguerre coefficients as random variables. In order to check the validity of the proposed methodology, it was applied to a linear oscillator model containing damping uncertainties, and also applied to model test data obtained by segmented hull model of 400,000 DWT VLOC as a practical problem.

  • Slamming phenomenon may occur when a ship navigates a high sea region, where the response of ship can be expected as elastic behaviour and the resultant wave loads may increase. In this paper, numerical analysis of ship motions and wave loads including momentum slamming was performed using the strip theory with regular waves. In order to analyze the effect of slamming force on the global ship motions, time histories of each mode of displacement and forces were simulated by using Newmark-beta time integration scheme. The added mass and damping coefficients calculated by Lewis form method were compared with the results of given references. For verification of numerical results, the motion RAOs of a S175 containership were calculated as an example of application and time histories of respective displacement and vertical bending moment were compared with the results of ITTC workshop benchmark test.
