The species composition and biomass of marine algae at the discharge canals of three (Gori, Wolseong and Uljin) nuclear power plants on the east coast of Korea were investigated seasonally from February 1992 to October 2000. As a result, 103-107 species of marine algae were found at the discharge canals during the past nine years. In general, algal communities established at the discharge canals were less diverse than those at the intake canals and control sites. 43 species (6 blue-green, 9 green, 10 brown and 18 red algae) of marine algae occurred more than 1/6 frequency and thus can be categorized as warm tolerant species. Among these, two green (Urospora penicilliformis, Cladophora albida), four brown (Sphacelaria divaricata, S. rigidula, Sargassum coreanum, S. fulvellum) and four red algae (Stylonema alsidii, Bangia atropurpurea, Hypnea charoides, Chondria crassicaulis) are recorded as warm tolerant marine algae for the first time in Korea during this study. Enteromorpha compressa, Padina arborescens, Amphiroa zonata and Ahnfeltiopsis flabelliformis were common species found more than 50% frequency at the discharge canals of all three nuclear power plants investigated. Dominant species in biomass were Padina arborescens and Amphiroa zonata. Results showed that, as a whole, the red algae appeared as predominant algal group at the discharge canals of all three nuclear power plants on the east coast of Korea. However, the biomass proportion of dominant algae at the discharge canals of each nuclear power plant varied over the year during the past nine years.
Distribution patterns of sandy bottom macrobenthic communities were studied around the Hupo coastal area. The seasonal surveys were conducted at 15 chosen sites within a depth range of 10 to 50 m along 10 km of the coastline using a Smith-McIntyre grab $(0.05\;m^2)$ in 2005. Overall depth distribution following the direction of the offshore become deeper parallel to the coastline. A total of 319 macrobenthic species were sampled with a mean density of $1,972\;ind./m^2$, and mean biomass was 82.5 wet-weight $g/m^2$. The major individual-dominant species were three polychaetes Spiophanes bombyx ($436\;ind./m^2$), Scoletoma longifolia ($250\;ind./m^2$) and Magelona japonica ($170\;ind./m^2$), and bivalve Adontorhina subquadrata ($73\;ind./m^2$). Cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) analysis based on Bray-Curtis similarity identified 2 major station groups which corresponded to macrobenthic faunal assemblages and their characteristic species. In addition, environmental conditions were significantly different between station groups. Group I contained mostly 20 and 50 m deep sites and was associated with sandy mud. Group I was characterized by high abundance of S. bombyx, S. longifolia, A. subquadrata. It was divided into two sub-groups (I-I and I-II) in relation to depth. Sub-group I-I was associated with deeper sites than sub-group I-II. Group II included mostly inshore area shallower than 15 m and was associated with coarse and medium sand. Group II was characterized by Lumbrinerides hayashii and Urothoe grimaldii japonica.
An Improvement of channel structure for sound fish habitat suitability enhancement is investigated. The restoration target species of Zacco Koreanus which is represented a sound aquatic ecosystem is selected by investigating results of the fish fauna and the river environments. The changes of lower channel width for enhancing suitability indices for water velocity and depth result in habitat suitability enhancement in general by PHABSIM simulation. The habitat suitability enhancement is not guaranteed consistently by the changes of lower channel is confirmed. The optimal lower channel widths at each reach are presented by genetic algorithm of optimization which is considering the enhancement of suitability indices for water velocity and depth with given instream flows. The suggested plan of the lower channel modification will contribute to the various projects for the environmental improvement of aquatic system.
Depending on season, mixed wastewater can show great deviations in terms of the influent ratios of tannery and seafood-wastewater. Increases in the ratio of tannery wastewater in influent water also result in increases in the concentration of chromium, which decreases the ratio of BOD/T-N so that the removal efficiency of organic and nitrogen pollutants in biological wastewater treatment deteriorates. No substantial differences occur in the ratios of Eubacteria/total bacteria as the ratio between tannery wastewater and seafood wastewater changes in the influent water. In contrast, the cell numbers and activities of Eubacteria and total bacteria significantly decline with increasing ratios of tannery wastewater in the influent water. Stable removal of organic and nitrogen pollutants by biological wastewater treatments leads to dominance of Proteobacteria groups in all biological treatment basins. In aeration and oxic basins, ${\gamma}$-Proteobacteria account for approximately 21% of the Eubacteria groups, at $1.9{\times}10^9{\sim}2.0{\times}10^9$ cells/mL, while in an anoxic basin, ${\beta}$-Proteobacteria account for approximately 19% of the Eubacteria groups, at $1.3{\times}10^9$ cells/mL. However, a substantial decline in dominance of approximately 11% occurs for ${\gamma}$-Proteobacteria in aeration and oxic basins and about 1% for ${\beta}$-Proteobacteria in an anoxic basin. Mixed wastewater that undergoes extensive property changes of the influent water shows an efficiency of biological treatment that is greatly influenced by the ratio of dominant Proteobacteria groups.

This paper proposes a new fire-smoke detection method by using extracted features from camera images and pattern recognition technique. First, moving regions are detected by analyzing the frame difference between two consecutive images and generate candidate smoke regions by applying smoke color model. A smoke region generally has a few characteristics such as similar color, simple texture and upward motion. From these characteristics, we extract brightness, wavelet high frequency and motion vector as features. Also probability density functions of three features are generated using training data. Probabilistic models of smoke region are then applied to observation nodes of our proposed Dynamic Bayesian Networks (DBN) for considering time continuity. The proposed algorithm was successfully applied to various fire-smoke tasks not only forest smokes but also real-world smokes and showed better detection performance than previous method.

In this study, web document frequency of city place name is analyzed and it is used as the dataset for rank-size analysis. The search keywords are compared in the context of spatial meaning and the different domain corpus is applied. The acquired search results are applied for the further analysis. Firstly, the rank-size analysis is applied to compare the result between population and document frequency. Secondly, in case of correlation analysis, the significant changes are revealed when the spatial criteria for search keywords are increased. In case of corpus, COM, NET, and ORG shows the higher coefficient values. Lastly, the cluster analysis is applied to classify the list of cities that shows the similarity and difference. These analyses have a significant role in representing the rank-size distribution of city names that are reflected on the web documents in the information society.

To understand interrelations between water quality and community structure of phytoplankton around the season of red tide outbreak, field surveys were conducted 10 times off the coast of Tongyeong from July to September in 2002. Because of heavy rain for 10 days, environmental conditions were changed and differed from the previous year, sustaining high nutrients and low salinity. During the surveyed period 48 species of 29 genera of phytoplankton were identified, and diatom and dinoflagellate was $51.8\%\;and\;38.0\%,$ respectively, At the time of bloom, cell counts of C. polykrikoides were outstanding but the number of species remarkably decreased. There were striking differences in dominant species among research stations before the bloom. Diatoms were the most dominant group in the whole study area in that period. Diversity and evenness index were highest just before outbreak of the red tides (2 Aug, 2002). During the bloom (4 Aug.), it decreased to the lowest value and then began to increase slowly. The result of PCA on water quality vs phytoplankton biomass showed that the land loads of nutrient may be the main cause of summer rally of phytoplankton biomass.

This study was carried out to understand the bird community and habitat using condition in the Gildong natural ecological park, from April 2001 to March 2002. In this study, 63 species and 2,075 individuals were observed respectively. The dominant species were Paradoxornis webbianus(33.6%), Emberiza elegans 18.5%), Parus major(6.4%), Pica pica(6.0%), and the diversity of the species was 2.511. With migration, the highest number and percentage to the lowest was residents, summer visitors, winter visitors and passage migrants. Among 17 species which bred in the Gildong natural ecological park, hole(H) was 47.1%, canopy(C) was 41.1% and bush(B) was 11.8% in their nesting guilds. In foraging guilds in breeding season was canopy(c) was 45.7%, water(w) was 23.9% and bush(c) was 15.2%, and, in non-breeding season, canopy was 43.5%, water 23.9% and bush 21.7%. For the habitats of the birds in the Gildong natural cological park, reservoir area was used by herons, ducks and sandpiper, wetland area was used by Lanius bucephalus, Paradoxornis webbianus and buntings, grassland area was used by Paradoxornis webbianus and buntings, and forest area was used by Streptopelia orientalis, woodpeckers and tits. The number of species and individuals of birds observed in the Gildong natural ecological park was higher than other urban parks. We suggest that this was attributed to different habitats such as reservoir, wetland, grassland and forest area constructed in the Gildong natural ecological park.
Although physiological and ecological characteristics of cyanobacteria have been studied extensively for decades, unknown areas still remain greater than the already known. Recently, the development of omics techniques based on molecular biology has made it possible to view the ecosystem from a new and holistic perspective. The molecular mechanism of toxin production is being widely investigated, by comparative genomics and the transcriptomic studies. Biological interaction between bacteria and cyanobacteria is also explored: how their interactions and genetic biodiversity change depending on seasons and environmental factors, and how these interactions finally affect each component of ecosystem. Bioinformatics techniques have combined with ecoinformatics and omics data, enabling us to understand the underlying complex mechanisms of ecosystems. Particularly omics started to provide a whole picture of biological responses, occurring from all layers of hierarchical processes from DNA to metabolites. The expectation is growing further that algal blooms could be controlled more effectively in the near future. And an important insight for the successful bloom control would come from a novel blueprint drawn by omics studies.

Temporal and spatial characteristics of cyanobacterial communities at the monitoring stations for Harmful Algal Bloom Alert System (HABAS) in Nakdong River and Lake Dukdong were investigated for two years (2013 to 2014). A total of 30 cyanobacterial species from 14 genera were found at the survey stations. Microcystis sp. showed maximum cell density in the total cyanobacterial community in August, 2014 at ND-2 and in September, 2013 at ND-3 station. Lynbya limnetica and Geitlerinema sp., non-target species for alert criteria showed maximum cell density at ND-1 (August, 2013) and Dam station of Lake Dukdong (September, 2014), respectively. Total cyanobacterial cell density and the relative abundance of four target genera (Microcystis, Anabaena, Aphanizomenon and Oscillatoria spp.) for alert criteria was relatively lower in the mesotrophic Lake Dukdong than at the eutrophic riverine stations of Nakdong River, indicating cyanobacterial density and the RA of target genera is affected by the trophic state of the monitoring stations. Simulating the alert system using phycocyanin concentration as an alert criterion resulted in the longer period of alert issued compared to the period of alert issued using the current criterion of harmful cyanobacterial cell density due to the influence of phycocyanin concentration from non-target cyanobacterial species.
