  • We propose a method to obtain various diffusion parameters of deposited atom. By comparing the results of kinetic Mote Carlo (KMC) simulation with the results of STM, HRLEED experiments, we can determine diffusion parameters including the hopping barrier of an adatom on terrace, detachment barrier at the step edge, and well known Schwoebel barrier. It is found that the branch-width, island density, and roughness were suitable atomic scale structure parameters for comparing simulation calculation with experimental results, and especially, it is found that the parameter branch-width which is not widely used in thin film growth study, plays an important role in determining diffusion barriers.

  • Long-term variation of zooplankton community and species composition was studied from 2003 to 2014 in a deep reservoir, Lake Soyang, in monsoon climate region, Korea. In addition, we examined the correlation with environmental factors. Annual precipitation of watershed showed a large variation in the $705{\sim}1,779mm\;yr^{-1}$ and more than 70% of it was being concentrated from June to September. The water quality of Lake Soyang was shown a clearly seasonal variations and particularly turbid water flowing into the lake during rainy season was the most important environmental factors. Zooplankton community in Lake Soyang showed a significant difference before and after 2006. Zooplankton biomass has shown a large increase and also showed a change in the zooplankton community structure since 2006. The of zooplankton showed positive correlation with temperature and BOD, Chl. a, TP concentration. These results are considered that nutrient and organic matter contained in the turbid water influences the increase in zooplankton biomass and species composition. However, water quality was limited to account for the increase in biomass of zooplankton. For example, increase of small zooplankton density (rotifer; Keratella cochlearis, Polyarthra vulgaris) in spring which is dominated by diatoms (large size; Melosira, Synedra etc.) is considered as a bottom-up effect by the microbial loop. And increased density of crustaceans in autumn was considered a top-down effects by the relationship between predator and prey of microzooplankton and mesozooplankton. In other words the inflow of allochthonous organic matter during rainy season also affected to zooplankton food web in Lake Soyang. In conclusion, biomass, diversity and long-term variations of zooplankton in Lake Soyang were determined by physico-chemical factors but also it is considered that biological interactions is important.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide informative statistics which can be used for effective Diabetes Management Programs. We collected and analyzed the data of 666 diabetic people who had participated in Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2007 and 2008. Group classification on management behavior of Diabetic Mellitus is based on the K-means clustering method. The Decision Tree method and Multiple Regression Analysis were used to study factors of the management behavior of Diabetic Mellitus. Diabetic people were largely classified into three categories: Health Behavior Program Group, Focused Management Program Group, and Complication Test Program Group. First, Health Behavior Program Group means that even though drug therapy and complication test are being well performed, people should still need to improve their health behavior such as exercising regularly and avoid drinking and smoking. Second, Focused Management Program Group means that they show an uncooperative attitude about treatment and complication test and also take a passive action to improve their health behavior. Third, Complication Test Program Group means that they take a positive attitude about treatment and improving their health behavior but they pay no attention to complication test to detect acute and chronic disease early. The main factor for group classification was to prove whether they have hyperlipidemia or not. This varied widely with an individual's gender, income, age, occupation, and self rated health. To improve the rate of diabetic management, specialized diabetic management programs should be applied depending on each group's character.

  • This study was conducted from March to August 1997 to decide the size of plant community in fragmentary habitats. The thirty one sites and one hundred and eighteen plots were plotted in the areas including Yangpyong, Yoju, Pyongtaek and Ansong in Kyonggi-do, Chomchon and Sangju in Kyongsangbuk-do, Nonsan in Chungchongnam-do and Iksan in Chollapuk-do. The area and number of woody species by correlation analysis were recorded as the highest value as 0.716. In order to apply the theory of island biogeography to the fragmented habitats in Korea, the four variables were calculated by regression model. The four variables such as number of woody species, number of woody individuals, number of herbaceous species and number of herbaceous individuals were recorded as significant with area at the level of 0.05 and R square was 0.71. The one function was selected between number of species and number of individuals from the canonical correlation analysis, and the function square was 0.8876. Both canonical function and squared canonical correlation showed significant at the level of 0.01. The number of species and individuals were not increased from the condition that was the size of plant community of 400$m^2$, 30 for number of species and 4,000 for number of individuals. This results of this study can be widely used as a basic information for the conservation management, especially the fragmented ecosystems or the biotop creation in the landscaping.

  • To determine the seasonal variation of bacterial community in the seawater of Gwangyang Bay, three hundred thirty six bacterial strains were isolated on February, May, July and October 2011. Amplified Ribosomal DNA Restriction Analysis (ARDRA) was used to construct the phylotyes of the isolates using the restriction endonuclease, Hae III. Diversity indices of ARDRA patterns were calculated. One hundred and one phylotypes including 40 unique pylotypes were found at the 80% similarity level. Partial 16S rRNA genes of one hundred thirty nine strains representing each phylotypes were sequenced and compared. Bacterial community composed of 4 different phyla which include Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes. Proteobacteria was the prevailing phylum in all seasons, followed by Bacteroidetes in winter, spring and autumn while Actinobacteria in summer. At the family level, Flavobacteriaceae dominated in winter and spring and Pseudoalteromonadaceae did in summer and autumn. Genera Altererythrobacter, Loktanella, Pseudoalteromonas and Vibrio were encountered in all seasons. The most diverse bacterial community was found in autumn followed by the order of spring, winter and summer.

  • Macrobenthic fauna in three Keum-Mankyung-Dongjin Estuaries and their nieghbouring coastal region in the west coast of Korea were sampled as 39 stations with van Veen grab to describe the distribution patterns of macrobenthos. Total 61 taxa from 10 faunal taxonomic groups and 5,636 individuals were collected. Abundance, species number, and faunal composition varied among three estuaries and coastal region. Dominant species from estuaries were similar to each other, but different from those of coastal region. Dominant species in estuarine regions were Prionospio cirrifera, potamocorbula amurensis. Nephtys californiensis, Glycera chiron and Glycinde sp, those from coastal area were Mactra chinensis. Magelona japonica, Owenia fusiformis. Anaitides Korean and Nephtys polybranchia. Two most dominant species in estuaries, Potamocorbula amanuensis and Prionospio cirrifer were not found elsewhere in Korean waters. The patchy distribution of dominant species and low species richness were reflected in the low species diversity Filter feeders were a major component in estuaries. High proportion of carnivores and low percentage of subsurface deposit feeders seemed to be a typical trophic composition in the study area. the distribution pattern of macrobenthos was related with the salinity and sediment types.

  • The aim of this study is to define a correlation between spatial distribution characteristics of FFG(Functional Feeding Groups) of aquatic insects and related environmental factors in the Geum River based on the theory of RCC(River Continuum Concept). For that objective we had used SMRA(Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis) method to analyze close relationship between the distribution of aquatic insects and the physical and chemical factors that may affect their inhabiting environment in the study area. And then, a probabilistic method named Frequency Ratio Model(FRM) and spatial analysis function of GIS were applied to produce a predictive distribution map of biota community considering their distribution characteristics according to the environmental factors as related variables. As a result of SMRA, the values of decision coefficient for factors of elevation, stream width, flow velocity, conductivity, temperature and percentage of sand showed higher than 0.5. Therefore these 6 environmental factors were considered as major factors that might affect the distribution characteristics of aquatic insects. Finally, we had calculated RMSE(Root Mean Square Error) between the predicted distribution map and prior survey database from other researches to verify the result of this study. The values of RMSE were calculated from 0.1892 to 0.4242 according to each FFG so we could find out a high reliability of this study. The results of this study might be used to develop a new estimation method for aquatic ecosystem with macro invertebrate community and also be used as preliminary data for conservation and restoration of stream habitats.

  • Aquatic macrophytes are important factors in determining species diversity and abundance of cladocerans, but the effects of cladocerans on plant species composition or structure have not been fully considered. In South Korea, wetlands and reservoirs that are prone to covering aquatic macrophytes are scattered across the country, so it is necessary to consider on aquatic macrophytes study, when aquatic animals including cladoceran were studied. in this study, the species and abundance of cladocerans community in six microhabitat types are investigated, and based on these results, habitat conservation and efficient management are suggested. The high species numbers and abundance of cladocerans communities were found in mixed plant communities consisting of free-floating, floating-leaved, and submerged plants. The inclusion of submerged plants in plant communities contributes significantly to the complexity of habitat structures, and may increase species and abundance of cladocenran communities. This can be compared to a plant community consisting only of free-floating and floating-leaved plants in the absence of submerged plants, thereby identifying the efficiency of submerged plants. In the mixed plant communities, species diversity was the highest due to the emergence of cladoceran species (Graptoleveris testudinaria, Ilyocryptus spinifer, and Leydigia acanthococcides) absent from other plant communities. The gradual increase in the biomass (g) of submerged plants in the mixed plant communities significantly increased the species numbers and abundance of cladoceran communities (p<0.05). This is strong evidence that the increase of submerged plants in mixed plant communities has a positive effect on efficiency as a habitat for cladocerans. Although submeged plants do not contribute significantly to their landscape/aesthetic value because they are submerged in water, they have the effect of increasing species diversity in terms of biology, so they should be considered important when creating/restoring wetlands.
