The continuous indentation techniques are one of the most effective methods to nondestructively estimate mechanical properties. There are many applications in various dimensions of materials from macro-scale, through micro-scale, even to nano-scale range. The macro-range technology of kgf-load level is now focused on the evaluation of tensile properties and residual stress of bulk materials, for example, used in conventional load-bearing structures and in-use pipelines. The technology and the apparatus were successfully developed by a domestic research group. The micro-range technology of gf-load level can be applied to investigate some property-gradient materials such as weldment. Because it has better spatial resolution than the macro-range technology. The nano-range technology (called nanoindentation technique) of mgf-load level is basically used to evaluate hardness and modulus of micro- and nano-materials. Moreover, many researches are going on to measure tensile properties and residual stress. The nanoindentation technology is easy to be applied to the various fields, such as semiconductor devices, multiphase materials, and biomaterials, though other methods are too difficult to be applied due to dimensional or environmental limitations. On the basis of these accomplishments, the international and the domestic standards are being established.

Increasing the strength of structural materials allows their self-weight to be reduced and this, in turn, enables the structures to satisfy esthetic requirements. The yield strength of high-performance steel is almost 480 MPa, which is approximately 50% higher than that of general structural steel. The use of high strength materials, however, makes the sections more slender, which can potentially result in significant local stability problems. The strength of slender element sections might be governed by their elastic buckling behavior, and the elastic buckling strength is very sensitive to the boundary conditions. Because the web provides the boundary conditions of the compressive thin-flange, the stiffness of the web can affect the elastic buckling strength of the flange. In this study, therefore, the effects of the flange and web slenderness ratios on the elastic flange local buckling of I-girders subjected to a pure bending moment were evaluated by finite element analysis (FEA). The analysis results show that the elastic local buckling strength and buckling modes were affected not only by the web support conditions, but also by the flange and web slenderness ratios.

The long-term behavior, such as in excavation problems of weak medium, can be dealt with by the elasto-viscoplasticity models. In this paper, a combined formulation of elasto-viscoplasticity using boundary elements and finite elements without using internal cells is presented. The domain integral introduced due to the viscoplastic stresses is transformed into a boundary integral applying direct integration in cylindrical coordinates. The results of the developed boundary element analysis are compared with those from the explicit solution and from the finite element analysis. It is observed that the boundary element analysis without internal cells results in some error because of its deficiency in handling the nonlinearity in local stress concentration. Therefore, a coupled analysis of boundary elements and finite elements, in which finite elements are used in the area of stress concentration, is developed. The coupled method is applied to a time dependent inelastic problem with semi-infinite boundaries. It results in reasonable solution compared with other methods where relatively higher degree of freedoms are employed. Thus, it is concluded that the combined analysis may be used for such problems in the effective manner.
The levee protect lifes, houses, and properties by blocking overflow of river. The revetment is forced to be covered on the slope of levee in order to prevent erosion. The stability of revetment is very important enough to directly connected to the stability of levee. In this study, the weak points of revetment on meandering channel were found by movable revetment experiment and the velocity and the water surface elevation (WSE) were measured at main points. The 3-D numerical simulations were performed under same conditions with experiment. And unclear flow characteristics by the limit of measuring instruments were analyzed through numerical simulation. Consequently, the section of large wall shear stress and the failure section are almost the same. Despite of small wall shear stress, the revetments located at right bank were carried away because of circulation zone due to secondary flow by meandering. With existing riprap design formula, the sizes of riprap determined using maximum local velocity were 1.5~4.7 times greater than them using mean velocity. As a result of this study, it is necessary to calculate the size of riprap in other ways for meandering and straight channel. At a later study, if the weighted value considered the radius of curvature and shape of hydraulic structure is applied to riprap design formula, it is expected that the size of revetment was evaluated rationally and accurately.

An elasto-plastic finite element method using the theory of strain gradient plasticity is proposed to evaluate the size dependency of structural plasticity that occurs when the configuration size decreases to micron scale. For this method, we suggest a low-order plane and three-dimensional displacement-based elements, eliminating the need for a high order, many degrees of freedom, a mixed element, or super elements, which have been considered necessary in previous researches. The proposed method can be performed in the framework of nonlinear incremental analysis in which plastic strains are calculated and averaged at nodes. These strains are then interpolated and differentiated for gradient calculation. We adopted a strain-gradient-hardening constitutive equation from the Taylor dislocation model, which requires the plastic strain gradient. The developed finite elements are tested numerically on the basis of typical size-effect problems such as micro-bending, micro-torsion, and micro-voids. With respect to the strain gradient plasticity, i.e., the size effects, the results obtained by using the proposed method, which are simple in their calculation, are in good agreement with the experimental results cited in previously published papers.

To improve the productivity of cargo containment construction for a membrane LNG carrier, it is important to shorten the installation period and process of the scaffolding system, which is a construction workbench of a cargo containment for a membrane LNG carrier. As an effective method, opinions are being gathered to enlarge the lifting unit from the existing two stages to eight stages. On the other hand, the stresses around the pin and hole will increase significantly because of the increase in lifting load according to the large size of the module. The purpose of this study was to establish a new large module-lifting plan by introducing TRIZ to solve these problems. This study adopted a method to utilize 40 inventive principles, which is one of the various problem-solving tools of TRIZ. First, technical contradictions were derived, the engineering parameters were selected. Second, efficient inventive principles were selected to overcome the technical contradictions using a contradiction matrix. Finally, the general and specific solutions were derived through the selected inventive principle, and structural analysis confirmed that the stress generated in the structure was low. The utility of TRIZ was confirmed by the successful lifting of large modules using the established lifting method.
Lymph nodes (LNs) are crucial sites where immune responses are initiated to combat invading pathogens in the body. LNs are organized into distinctive compartments by stromal cells. Stromal cell subsets constitute special niches supporting the trafficking, activation, differentiation, and crosstalk of immune cells in LNs. Fibroblastic reticular cells (FRC) are a type of stromal cell that form the three-dimensional structure networks of the T cell-rich zones in LNs, providing guidance paths for immigrating T lymphocytes. FRCs imprint immune responses by supporting LN architecture, recruiting immune cells, coordinating immune cell crosstalk, and presenting antigens. During inflammation, FRCs exert both spatial and molecular regulation on immune cells through their topological and secretory responses, thereby steering immune responses. Here, we propose a model in which FRCs regulate immune responses through a three-part scheme: setting up, supporting, or suppressing immune responses. FRCs engage in bidirectional interactions that enhance T cell biological efficiency. In addition, FRCs have profound effects on the innate immune response through phagocytosis. Thus, FRCs in LNs act as gatekeepers of immune responses. Overall, this study aims to highlight the emerging roles of FRCs in controlling both innate and adaptive immunity. This collaborative feedback loop mediated by FRCs may help maintain tissue function during inflammatory responses.

The flow in the meandering channel is characterized by the spiral motion of secondary currents that typically cause the erosion along the outer bank. Hydraulic structures, such as spur dike and groyne, are commonly installed on the channel bottom near the outer bank to mitigate the strength of secondary currents. This study is to investigate the effects of submerged vanes installed in a $90^{\circ}$ meandering channel on the development of secondary currents through three-dimensional numerical modeling using the hybrid RANS/LES method for turbulence and the volume of fluid method, based on OpenFOAM open source toolbox, for capturing the free surface at the Froude number of 0.43. We employ the second-order-accurate finite volume methods in the space and time for the numerical modeling and compare numerical results with experimental measurements for evaluating the numerical predictions. Numerical results show that the present simulations well reproduce the experimental measurements, in terms of the time-averaged streamwise velocity and secondary velocity vector fields in the bend with submerged vanes. The computed flow fields reveal that the streamwise velocity near the bed along the outer bank at the end section of bend dramatically decrease by one third of mean velocity after the installation of vanes, which support that submerged vanes mitigate the strength of primary secondary flow and are helpful for the channel stability along the outer bank. The flow between the top of vanes and the free surface accelerates and the maximum velocity of free surface flow near the flow impingement along the outer bank increases about 20% due to the installation of submerged vanes. Numerical solutions show the formations of the horseshoe vortices at the front of vanes and the lee wakes behind the vanes, which are responsible for strong local scour around vanes. Additional study on the shapes and arrangement of vanes is required for mitigate the local scour.

As climate changes and abnormal climates have drawn research interest recently, many countries utilize the GCM, which is based on SRES suggested by IPCC, to obtain more accurate forecast for future climate changes. Especially, many research attempts have been made to simulate localized geographical characteristics by using RCM with the high resolution data globally. To evaluate the impacts of climate and landuse change on water resources in the Han-river basin, we carried out the procedure consisting of the CA-Markov Chain, the Multi-Regression equation using two independent variables of temperature and rainfall, the downscaling technique based on the RegCM3 RCM, and SLURP. From the CA-Markov Chain, the future landuse change is forecasted and the future NDVI is predicted by the Multi-Regression equation. Also, RegCM3 RCM 50 sets were generated by the downscaling technique based on the RegCM3 RCM provided by KMA. With them, 90 year runoff scenarios whose period is from 2001 to 2090 are simulated for the Han-river basin by SLURP. Finally, the 90-year simulated monthly runoffs are compared with the historical monthly runoffs for each dam in the basin. At Paldang dam, the runoffs in September show higher increase than the ones in August which is due to the change of rainfall pattern in future. Additionally, after exploring the impact of the climate change on the structure of water circulation, we find that water management will become more difficult by the changes in the water circulation factors such as precipitation, evaporation, transpiration, and runoff in the Han-river basin.
In order to evaluate the local site effects at two town fortress areas in Korea where stone parapets were col-lapsed by historical earthquakes, site characteristics were assessed using site investigations such as borehole drillings and seismic tests. Equivalent-linear site response analyses were conducted based on the shear ways velocity ($V_s$) profiles and geotechnical characteristics determined from site investigations. The study sites are categorized as site classes C and B according to the mean $V_s$ to 30 m ranging from 500 to 850 m/s, and their site periods are distributed in the short period range of 0.06 to 0.16 sec, which contains the natural period of fortress wall and stone parapet. From the results of site response analyses in the study areas, for site class C indicating most of site conditions, contrary to site class B, the short-period (0.1-0.5 sec) and mid-period (0.4-2.0 sec) site coefficients, $F_a$ and $F_v$ specified in the Korean seismic design guide, underestimate the ground motion in short-period band and overestimate the ground motion in mid-period band, respectively, due to the high amplification in short period range, which represent the site-specific seismic response characteristics. These site-specific response characteristics indicate the potential of resonance in fortress walls during earthquake and furthermore could strongly affect the collapse of parapets resulted from seismic events in historical records.
