  • Nowadays, market demand of structural Glulam is growing and diversifying. The durability of Glulam should be significantly considered when they are intended to apply for out-door use such as timber bridge and pergola. This study was aimed to develop the manufacturing process of preservative treated structural Glulam using domestic softwood species. 10 m long structural Glulam were manufactured from domestic pitch pine logs with CuAz-3 preservative treatment. At each manufacturing process, the production yield was evaluated. Finally, bending tests were performed to verify the structural performance of manufactured Glulam. From the results, it was shown that the preservative treatment process hardly influenced on the production yield. But domestic pitch pine was proved to not be suitable for making the preservative treated Glulam due to the large difference of preservative permeability between sapwood and heartwood.

  • Consumer demand for wood use has diversified recently. Laminated wood has been used for large-scale buildings and public buildings, not only the durability but also the demand for fire safety has increased. In this study. it was performed for the purpose of developing a standard and flame-retardant treatment technology suitable for structural laminated wood, which was prepared in domestic larch. In this study, by using the domestic larch and Korean pine lumber which treated with flame-retardants, to manufacture the glulam, the effect of strength properties were investigated. In the case of fire retardant treated larch Glulam was satisfactory conditions of the strength of structural laminated wood, but had to be improved, such as the occurrence of delamination and decrease strength by the flame retardant treatment. Development of application-type flame retardant treatment technology or injection-type flame retardant treatment after production of laminated lumber were required.

  • The fire resistance design of timber structures involves calculating the residual section based on charring depth, which is then utilized in structural design. Charring depth is determined from fire-resistance test results in Korea, which currently do not account for the charring properties of the adhesive used in Glued Laminated Timber(GLT) production. This study fabricated GLT using various adhesives employed in domestic GLT production, comparing the charring properties by adhesive type and the fire resistance performance relative to the directionality of the laminated surface. Melamine demonstrated the most advantageous fire resistance performance, followed by resorcinol and polyurethane. Furthermore, it was established that the laminated section exhibited a higher charring rate, influenced by the adhesive, compared to the laminated surface, which significantly impacts the fire resistance performance.

  • This study was carried out to scrutinize possibility of manufacturing pitch pine (Pinus rigida) glued laminated timber in order to add values of pitch pine trees. Also, it was investigated to improve bending performance of pitch pine glulam. Pitch pine was imported as one of major plantation species in Korean peninsula. Machine stress rated grades of pitch pine lumber mostly ranged between E7 and E9. which grades were more or less inferior to producing high quality glulam. However, the adhesive properties between pitch pine and pitch pine, and between pitch pine and Japanese larch (Larix kaempferi Carr.), such as shear bond strength, wood failure rate and de-lamination rate of bonded layer submerged in cold and boiling water, were higher than Korean Standard criteria. These properties are essential for manufacturing glulam with single species or multiple species. The modulus of rupture (MOR) of pitch pine glulam exceeded the criterion of Korean Standard for glulam strength grade but modulus of elasticity (MOE) was lower than the criterion. On the other hand, the bending performances (MOR and MOE) were improved 20 percent by mixing with Japanese larch laminar. It is effective to arrange higher quality Japanese larch laminar at the outer layer of glulam for improving bending performances. In conclusion, it is possible to use low quality pitch pine as laminar of structural glulam for adding values of pitch pine.

  • In this study, the flexural strength and ductility of steel-timber composite beams were evaluated to enhance the structural performance of glued-laminated timber beams. Three specimens were fabricated, including one reference glulam beam and two composite beams. The composite beams were constructed by attaching steel sections to the glulam beam using either liquid adhesive or screws. The experimental results showed that the structural performance of the steel-timber composite beams was approximately 2-3 times higher than the reference glulam beam, indicating that both flexural strength and ductility were sufficiently ensured. Notably, the specimen constructed with liquid adhesive demonstrated superior structural performance compared to the screw-attached specimen.

  • This study was aimed to quantify the amount of carbon dioxide emissions and to suggest suitable plans which consider the carbon emission reduction in the manufacturing process of the domestic structural glued laminated timber. Field investigation on two glued laminated timber manufacturers was conducted to find out material flow input values such as raw materials, transportation, manufacturing process, and energy consumption during manufacturing process. Based on the collected data and the relevant literatures about life cycle inventory (LCI), the amount of carbon dioxide emission per unit volume was quantified. Results show that the carbon dioxide emissions for sawing, drying and laminating process are 31.0, 109.0, 94.2 kg $CO_2eq./m^3$, respectively. These results show 13% lesser amount of total carbon dioxide emissions compared with the imported glued laminated timber in Korea. Furthermore, it was decreased about 37% when the fossil fuel would be replaced with biomass fuel in drying process. Findings from this study is effectively used as the basic data on the life cycle assessment of wooden building.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the shear bond strength and adhesive bond durability of structural glued laminated timber (glulam) manufactured with mixed species lumber of Korean red pine, Korean pine and Japanese larch, using resorcinol adhesive and water-based polymeric-isocyanate adhesive (WPI). Each board used as a glulam lamina was graded by visual inspection. The visual lumber grade of the all species was very low due to the large size and number of knots and the steep slope of grain. In view of the results, appropriate pruning, sawing and drying processes might be needed to produce high grade lamina lumber with small knot size and drying defect free. Shear bond strength of every tested glulam specimen ranged between 7.9 and $9.9N/mm^2$, and much higher than the Korean Standard (KS) for glulam shear bond strength, $7.1N/mm^2$. There was not much shear bond strength difference between wood/resorcinol and wood/WPI. The resorcinol adhesive bond durability exceeded KS requirements. However, delamination on the end-grain surfaces of WPI glulam submerged in both room temperature and boiling water severely occurred, and its durability did not meet KS requirements. Further investigations may be required, and special care should be taken, to ensure long service life of WPI glulam used for exterior application. Results of this study are expected to be useful for improvement of mechanical properties and structural performance of mixed species glulam.
