  • This paper presents a seismic analysis technique for a 3D soil-structure interaction system in a frequency domain, based on the finite element formulation incorporating frequency-dependent infinite elements for the far field soil region. Earthquake input motions are regarded as traveling P, SV and SH waves which are incident vertically from the far-field soil region, and then equivalent earthquake forces are calculated using impedances of infinite soil by dynamic infinite elements and traction and displacement from free field response analysis. For verification and application, seismic response analyses are carried out for a multi-layered soil medium without structure and a typical nuclear power plant in consideration of soil-structure interaction. The results are compared with the free field response using a one-dimensional analytic solution, and a dynamic response of an example structure from another SSI package.

  • The data repositories for structural experiment information needs to be efficient to use in order to allow structural engineers and researchers to store and retrieve easily the information involved in the structural experiments. The data repositories can be evaluated in terms of the organization of the data repositories themselves and of the organization of the actual experiment information in the data repositories, which can be represented using classes and objects with their attributes. This paper proposes the evaluation criteria of attributes of the classes and objects. The evaluation criteria of the attributes of the classes, such as the number of attributes in class and the numbers of the data-valued and object entity-valued attributes, are used for understanding the complexity of the organization of the data repositories. The evaluation criteria of the attributes of the objects, such as the number of valued attributes in object, are used for describing how the actual experiment information is stored through the levels in the data repositories for the structural experiment information.

  • In this study, an optimal structural design framework has been developed for the structural design of composite helicopter blades. The optimal design framework is constructed using PSGA (Particle Swarm assisted Genetic Algorithm), which combines the genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimizer. The optimization process consists of a finite element (FE) modeling over the blade section, two-dimensional (2D) cross-sectional FE analysis, and 1D rotating blade analysis. In the design process, the geometric curves and surfaces are formed using the B-spline scheme while discretizing the sections via a FE mesh generation program Gmsh. The blade cross-sections are created in accordance with the design variables when performing the blade structural analysis. The proposed optimization design framework is applied to a modernization of the HART II (Higher-harmonic Aeroacoustics Rotor Test II) blades. It is demonstrated that an improved blade design is reached through the current optimization framework with the satisfaction of all design requirements set for the study.

  • The purpose of this study is to build a metadata set based on the semantic structure of the humanities field research articles for research data that can associate research data and research articles. To understand the interest of Humanities researchers, keywords of research articles were categorized. By proceeding the keywords classification and analyzing based on the semantic structure of general research papers, additional elements to be added were identified for reflecting the characteristics of the humanities field. Based on it, 17 metadata elements based on the semantic structure of research papers in the humanities field was determined. In order to evaluate whether the metadata is appropriate as a metadata for research data in the humanities field, a survey was conducted on researchers in the humanities field. As a result of the survey, 7 elements were judged to be suitable for use as metadata for research data in the field of humanities, and 10 other elements were identified as usable elements. Drawing on the survey results, the metadata based on the semantic structure of the humanities field research articles for research data was constructed.

  • For the medical analysis of the three-dimensional structure such as the mandible, it is necessary to reconstruct the structure into the finite number of analyzable elements. The information of the three-dimensional structure can be obtained from the cross-sections of the magnetic resonance image (MRI). A region corresponding to the structure is extracted from the inner part of the cross- section. By the triangulation of the sampled cross-section image, two-dimensional finite elements are generated. Three-dimensional finite elements are constructed by matching the two dimensional finite elements each other in space. In this paper a construction method of the optimal three-dimensional finite elements has been suggested, which uses the adjacent information abstracted from the triangulated two-dimensional finite elements. The elements are classified into the identical property sets by using the adjacent information of the traingulated two-dimensional elements. After applying the multistep matching algorithm to the classified two-dimensional finite elements, the optimal three-dimensional finite elements can be construccted. By analyzing the constructed finite elements, it is possible to get much more useful medical information about the three-dimensional struture of mandible.

  • For stiffened plates composed of composite materials, many researchers have used a finite element method which connected isoparametric plate elements and beam elements. However, the finite element method is difficult to reflect local behavior of stiffener because beam elements are transferred stiffness for nodal point of plate elements, especially the application is limited in case of laminated composite structures. In this paper, for analysis of laminated composite stiffened plates, 3D shell elements for stiffener and plate are employed. Reissner-Mindlin's first order shear deformation theory is considered in this study. But when thickness will be thin, isoparamatric plate bending element based on the theory of Reissner-Mindlin is generated by transverse shear locking. To eliminate the shear locking and virtual zero energy mode, the substitute shear strain field is used. A deflection distribution is investigated for simple supported rectangular and skew stiffened laminated composite plates with arbitrary orientation stiffener as not only variation of slenderness and aspect ratio of the plate but also variation of skew angle of skew stiffened plates.

  • Post-installed anchors were widely used due to its workable benefits. Regarding the resistance performance of anchors, the critical edge distance is presented to minimize the impact of concrete splitting. In the case of actual anchors, however, it is difficult to obtain the ideal edge distance. The purpose of this study is to identify resistance performance and behavior characteristics that contain complex elements such as concrete crack occurring under tensile load. Tensile tests were conducted based on the standard method. Failure shape and the resistance characteristics that do not have the critical edge distance were derived by tensile load. Parametric analysis according to the boundary condition was performed to simulate the actual tensile behavior, through a nonlinear finite element model based on the specimen. Consequently therefore, verifying analysis results the resistance mechanism can be applied through boundary conditions.

  • Vibrations and wave propagations in waveguide structures can be analysed efficiently by using waveguide finite element (WFE) method. The WFE method only models the 2-dimensional cross-section of the waveguide with finite elements so that the size of the model and computing time are much less than those of the 3-dimensional FE models. For cylindrical shells or pipes which have simple cross-sections, the external coupling with fluids can be treated theoretically. For waveguides of complex cross-sectional geometries, however, numerical methods are required to deal with external fluids. In this numerical approach, the external fluid is modelled by the boundary elements (BEs) and connected to WFEs. In order to validate this WFE/BE method, a pipe submerged in water is considered in this study. The dispersion diagrams and point mobilities of the pipe simulated are compared to those that theoretically obtained. Also the acoustic powers radiated from the pipe are predicted and compared in both cases of air and water as an external medium.

  • A ship collision analysis by finite element method is performed considering the effects of mass and speed of ship and material and shape of structures to analyze the dynamic characteristics by ship collision. From this analysis, collision load-time history and damage of ship and structures are obtained. In this study, results of finite element analysis are compared with previous studies in USA, Japan and some countries of Europe. Dynamic characteristics are different from each other according to interaction between ship and structures. It seems that there are lots of factor to have effects on the ship-structures interaction. Because little information is available on the behavior of the inelastic deformation of materials and structures during the type of dynamic impacts associated with vessel impact, assumptions based on experience and sound engineering practice should be substituted. Therefore more researches on the interaction between ship and structures are required.
