  • Masonry structures are used as bearing walls in small buildings, but they are generally considered non-bearing walls. They are used as partition walls that divide the interior spaces of the frame structures of buildings. In addition, wetting techniques that use mortar as an adhesive between blocks or bricks in construction are vulnerable to climatic conditions, especially cracks in mortar, which can cause conduction collapse of the walls in seismic loading. The purpose of this research was to propose a dry concrete block construction method that complements the weak axial shear stiffness and improves the weakness of the wet construction method as well as to investigate its structural behavior. In this study, the material properties of concrete blocks were examined, and the seismic performance of the proposed dry assembly structure was verified by structural behavior tests on horizontal cyclic loads. First, in these study results, concrete blocks can be applied to the dry block construction method instead of wet construction methods because they secure more than C-type blocks in KS regulations. Second, the structural performance of the wall against a horizontal cyclic load indicates that the resisting force of the assembly block wall is increased by increasing the horizontal length of the wall, forming several diagonal cracks. Finally, the proposed dry block wall structure requires a seismic performance assessment considering that the ratio of the shape of the wall by height and length is considered a major influence variable on the structural behavior under a horizontal load.

  • As buildings are built higher and their service life made longer, face brick walls are also required to be constructed in an easy and systematic manner, and to ensure their satisfying structural performance, inspectingly, against lateral load. Therefore this study aims to investigate the structural performance of face brick walls constructed by a new method using screwed stainless steel connectors and provide fundamental experiment data for field application of this method. The results of this study indicated that the face brick wall tied with screw connectors had better shear capacity against rocking motion than that of the wall constructed with ordinary tie bars when their tie spacing was the same. Based on the good performance of the wall tied with the screw connector, it is also expected that the spiral anchors developed in this study can possibly applied to high-rise by adjusting the spacing of the anchors considering the difference of dimensions.

  • The objective of this study is to determine the range of confinement (or the transverse reinforcement of the reinforced concrete structural walls with the T-shaped cross section subjected to cyclic lateral loads. The range of confinement for transverse reinforcement is related to the location of neutral axis and determined by the magnitude and distribution of compressive strain. The compressive strain depends on the ratio of wall cross sectional area to the floor-plan area, the aspect ratio, configuration, the axial load, and the reinforcement ratios. By affection of flange, the neutral axis appears different depending on positive and negative forces and because of this reason, when web and flange are subjected to compressive stress, the range of confinement for the transverse reinforcement of T-shaped walls would shows different result. Therefore this experimental research focused on the structural characteristics of T-shaped walls and suggested the neutral axis depth through comparing the results of this study with sectional analysis.

  • Nonplanar structural walls with C-shaped and H-shaped sections have been used as an efficient lateral force-resisting system for building structures. Since the nonplanar walls are subjected to axial load and bending moments about two orthogonal axes, complicated section analysis is required for flexure-compression design. In the present study, a straightforward design method for biaxially loaded C- and H-shaped walls was proposed by modifying the existing load contour method for columns with symmetric solid sections. For this, a strain compatibility section analysis program that can calculate biaxial moment strengths of arbitrary wall section was developed and its validity was verified by comparing with existing test results. Then, through parametric study, the interaction of biaxial moments at constant axial loads in prototype C- and H-shaped walls was investigated. The results showed that, due to unsymmetrical geometry of the wall sections, the biaxial interaction was significantly affected by the moment directions and axial loads. From those investigations, non-dimensional contour equations of the biaxial moments at constant axial loads for C- and H-shaped walls were suggested. Further, design examples using the proposed contour equations were given for engineering practice.

  • This study verifies the structural capacity of the composite PHC pile (Pretensioned spun high-strength concrete) consisting of a PHC pile and two CT structural steels. Four full-scale specimens are fabricated and the experimental tests were performed to investigate the flexural behaviors of the composite PHC piles. The composite PHC pile can enhance both the structural capacity and functional convenience, since the web of CT structural steel with holes in the web acts as a shear connector (referred to as the perfobond rib), which can connect concrete and steel. All specimens exhibited flexural failure and the ultimate strengths were larger than the anticipated design strength according to the design standard. Thus, the composite PHC pile can be applicable to wall structures with sufficient strength. In addition, it seems that the web of the CT structural steel with holes performs its role as shear connectors.

  • The objective of this study was to experimentally investigate the structural behavior of steel plate concrete walls with vertical ribs (SSC walls), to compare the experimental results with the currently applied evaluation equations, and to obtain information that would be useful in the development of design equations for SSC walls. SSC test specimens that were subjected to in plane shear forces and bending moments were fabricated and tested. The experimental results show that the effect of vertical ribs on the structural behavior of SSC walls may be neglected, and that the confinement effect of concrete on the steel plates on both sides of the walls was negligible. The comparison of the experimental results with the evaluation equations showed that the structural behavior of SSC walls under shear control is close to that of the evaluation equations, but that the behavior of SSC walls under larger bending moments is not very close to that of the evaluation equations. The current evaluation equations for USC walls may be applied to the design of SSC walls because the structural walls of nuclear power plants are not subjected to large in plane bending moments.

  • The present study examined the reversal cyclic flexural behavior of walls with jacket section approach for seismic strengthening through forming the boundary elements at both ends of the wall. The prestressed wire ropes were used for the lateral reinforcement to confine the boundary element of the wall. The main parameter investigated was the height of the jacket section for strengthening. The limit height of the strengthening jacket section was determined by comparing the moment distributions between the existing and strengthened walls. Test results showed that the examined jacket section approach was significantly effective in enhancing the flexural resistance of walls, indicating 46% higher stiffness at peak strength and 210% greater work damage indicator, compared with the flexural performance of the unstrengthened wall. The ductility of the strengthened walls was insignificantly affected by the height of the jacket section when the height is greater than twice the wall length. The flexural capacity of the strengthened walls was 22% higher than the predictions obtained using the equivalent stress block specified in ACI 318-14.

  • Fireproof structures using concrete, built-up panels and dry walls are usually used in walls inside fire compartments. However, demand for glass walls is emerging due to increase in interest in visibility and external appearance. In this study on steel fire resistance walls using insulation glass, fire resistance tests and performance evaluations were conducted on 60 minute fire resistance walls and exterior walls which could be applied to interior fire compartments and 90 minute fire resistance walls which could be applied to curtain walls. According to the tests, the specimens satisfied the required fire resistance performance. The finite element analysis was conducted after the tests to evaluate the fire resistance performance of the glass walls. The analysis results showed that the preliminary evaluation of fire resistance performance would be feasible.
