  • In this study, a basic experiment was conducted to examine the possibility of using mechanochromic sensors to monitor the health of construction structures. The strain and color variation characteristics of the mechanochromic sensor according to the type of finish of the concrete material were investigated. As a result, it was confirmed that the strain and color variation reactivity of the mechanochromic sensor increased as the tensile strain of the concrete specimen increased. In addition, the difference in the finishing environments of concrete, urethane, epoxy, water-based paint and oil-based paint did not affect the deformation and discoloration characteristics of the mechanochromic sensor.

  • Bridges are important transportation infrastructure, but they are subject to damage and cracking due to various environmental factors and constant traffic loads, which accelerate their aging. With many bridges now older than their original construction, there is a need for systems to ensure safety and diagnose deterioration. Bridges are already utilizing structural health monitoring (SHM) technology to monitor the condition of bridges in real time or periodically. Along with this technology, the development of intelligent bridge monitoring technology utilizing artificial intelligence and Internet of Things technology is underway. In this paper, we study an edge system technique for predicting bridge safety using fast Fourier transform and dimensionality reduction algorithm for maintenance of aging bridges. In particular, unlike previous studies, we investigate whether it is possible to form a dataset using sensor data collected from actual bridges and check the safety of bridges.

  • Fiber-Reinforced Cementitious Composites (FRCCs) have electrical conductivity by inserting reinforced conductive fibers into a cementitious matrix. Such characteristic allows us to utilize FRCCs for crack monitoring of a structure by measuring electrical responses without sensor installation. However, the electrical responses are often sensitively altered by temperature variation as well as crack initiation. The temperature variation may disturb crack detection on the measured electrical responses. Moreover, as sensing probes for measuring electrical reponses increase, undesired contact noises are often augmented. In this paper, a self-sensing impedance circuit is specially designed for reducing the number of sensing probes. The crack initiation and temperature variation effects on the self-sensing impedance responses of FRCCs are experimentally investigated using the self-sensing impedance circuit. The experiment results reveal that the electrical impedance response are more sensitively changed due to temperature variation than crack initiation.

  • This paper presents a method that integrates passive and active-sensing techniques for the structural health monitoring of plate-like structures. Three piezoelectric transducers are deployed in a L-shape to detect and locate an impact event by measuring and processing the acoustic emission data. The same sensor arrays are used to estimate the subsequent structural damage using guided waves. Because this method does not require a prior knowledge of the structural parameters, such as the wave velocity profile in various directions, accurate results could be achieved even on anisotropic or curved plates. A series of experiments was performed on plates, including a spar-wing structure, to demonstrate the capability of the proposed method. The performance was also compared to that of traditional approaches and the superior capability of the proposed method was experimentally demonstrated.

  • The development projects distort the natural water circulation system and increase the non-point source pollution by changing the natural cover type. The low impact development (LID) techniques are considering as new development approach to decrease the ecological- and hydrological impacts from high imperviousness rate. The high imperviousness rate is because of the construction of building, parking lot and road for human activities. Knowing the basic characteristics of rood runoff can give the direction for setting up the water management strategy. The monitoring results show the pollutant EMCs of roof runoff are 3~13 times lower than EMCs of the road and parking lot. The pollutant sources from roof runoff are mainly from leafs, cigarette butts, atmospheric deposition and materials of the roof. The EMC is occurred around 15minutes later after starting runoff and more than 8 storm events are needed to have the average EMCs.

  • This study experimentally investigates the characteristics of Lamb wave propagating in a composite plate of varied thickness. In practical aerospace structures, there are so many parts that have varied thickness. Therefore, in order to employ the Lamb wave in a structural health monitoring of those parts, it is necessary to understand correctly the characteristics of Lamb wave for the structure with thickness variation. Thin surface-bonded piezoelectric transducers, which have great potential in integrated monitoring systems for structural health, were used to generate and receive Lamb waves. The predicted propagation velocity under the assumptions of ideal mode conversions was compared with the experimentally measured one. The validity of the results was supported by the frequency analysis of the signals. Consequently, the results show that the transient region is occurred when Lamb waves propagate across the region that thickness variation over some gradient exists.

  • This study proposes an estimation method of strain distribution for multi-span steel beam structure under unspecific loading conditions. The estimation method in this paper employs the curve fitting using the least square method from measured strain data, not analytical method. To verify the proposed estimation method, a static loading test for multi-span steel beam on which distributed and concentrated loads act was conducted. The strain data for verification was measured by FBG sensors that have multiplexing technology. The analysis of the accuracy of strain estimation for distributed and concentrated loads and the errors by considering the number of measured points used in the estimation were conducted. In the maximum strain points, the strains could be estimated with the errors of 5.89% (loading step 1) and 6.26% (loading step 2). In case of decreasing the number of sensors, it was also confirmed that the errors increased (0.26~0.37%). Through the curve fitting method, it is possible to estimate the strain distribution (maximum strains and their locations) of multi-span beam for unspecific loads and go over the limit of the analytical estimation method which is suitable for specific distributed loads.

  • The application of health monitoring, including a fault detection technique, is needed to secure the structural safety of large structures. A 2-step crack identification method for detecting the crack location and size of the beam structure is presented. First, a crack occurrence region was estimated using the modified Laplacian operator for the strain mode shape obtained from the distributed local strain data. The crack location and size were then identified based on the natural frequencies obtained from the acceleration data and the neural network technique for the pre-estimated crack occurrence region. The natural frequencies of a cracked beam were calculated based on an equivalent bending stiffness induced by the energy method, and used to generate the training patterns of the neural network. An experimental study was carried out on an aluminum cantilever beam to verify the present method for crack identification. Cracks were produced on the beam, and free vibration tests were performed. A crack occurrence region was estimated using the modified Laplacian operator for the strain mode shape, and the crack location and size were assessed using the natural frequencies and neural network technique. The identified crack occurrence region agrees well with the exact one, and the accuracy of the estimation results for the crack location and size could be enhanced considerably for 3 damage cases. The presented method could be applied effectively to the structural health monitoring of large structures.

  • Structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques based on the use of active-sensing piezoelectric (PZT) materials have received considerable attention. The validation of the PZT functionality during SHM operation is critical to successfully implementing a reliable SHM system. In this study, we investigated several parameters that affect the admittance-based sensor diagnostic process. We experimentally identified the temperature dependency of the active-sensor diagnostic process. We found that the admittance-based sensor diagnostic process can differentiate the adhesion conditions of bonding materials that are used to install a PZT on a structure, which is important when designing a sensor diagnostic process for an SHM system.

  • The quality control of composite structure includes inspection, testing and monitoring in all processes from receiving inspection to part fabrication. The purpose of these activities is to ensure that the design objectives are consistently achieved. The quality factors include material, receiving inspection, storage and shelf-life control, environmental control, testing, inspection and record control. This paper presents the process verification method using destructive test and quality control method in composite structure of aircraft. And it is believed that the destructive test will be basis to obtain a reliability of non-destructive test in complex composite structure and to ensure the design requirements in composite part.
