  • In this study, structural deformation estimation using displacement-strain relationship is investigated. When displacements of a structure cannot be measured directly, estimation of displacements using strain data can be an alternative solution. Additionally, the deformation of the whole structure as well as the displacement at the point of interest can be estimated. Strain signals are obtained front Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG) sensors that have an excellent multiplexing ability. Some experiments were performed on two beams and a plate to which FBG sensors were attached in the laboratory. Strain signals from FBG sensors along a single strand of optical fiber were obtained through wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) method. The beams and the plate structures were subjected to various loading conditions, and deformed shapes were reconstructed from the displacement-strain transformation relationship. The results show good agreements with those measured directly from laser sensors. Moreover, the whole structural shapes of the beams and the plate were estimated using only some strain sensors.

  • Structural Dynamics Modification (SDM) is a very effective technique to improve structure's dynamic characteristics by adding or removing auxiliary structures, changing material properties and shape of structure. Among those of SDM technique, the method to change shape of structure has been mostly relied on engineer's experience and trial-and-error process which are very time consuming. In order to develop a systematic method to change structure shape, surface grooving technique is studied. In this work, the shape of base structure was modified to improve its dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies via surface grooving technique. Grooving shape was formed by mergingthe neighboring small embossing elements after analyzing frequency increment sensitivities of all the neighboring emboss elements. For this process, Criterion Factor was introduced and the initial grooving was started from the element having highest strain energy and the grooving is expanded into neighboring element. The range of targeting grooving area to check its frequency variations restricted to their neighboring area to reduce the computation effort. This surface grooving technique was successfully applied to a hard disk drives (HDD) cover model to raise its natural frequency by giving some groove on its surface.

  • Acoustic signal is emitted from a vessel and received by a cylindrical array sensor at some distance from the vessel. Acoustic signal is the source for a cylindrical array sensor which is designed to detect the acoustic signal. Cylindrical array sensors seldom have an ideal hydrodynamic shape and are not sufficiently robust to survive without some protection and they are normally housed in a sonar dome. Reflected signals by some structure inside a sonar dome make unwanted signals. Therefore, an acoustic baffle is used to minimize unwanted signals. The performance of the acoustic baffles can be determined from the acoustic numerical analysis at the design stage. In this study, finite element method was used to analyze the acoustic field around the cylindrical array sensor and baffle effects. The baffle performance can be defined the echo reduction. To show the baffle performance, the specimens were made for pulse tube test and echo reductions were measured during the test. In this paper, the effect of echo reduction of the acoustic baffle was discussed.

  • Actual engineering structure is frequently very complex, and parts of structure are designed independently by different engineers. Also each structure contains so many degree of freedom. For these reason, methods have been developed which permits the structure to be divided into components or substructures, with analysis being done on a small substructure in order to obtain a full structural system. In such case, because of different mesh size among finite element model (FEM) or different matching points among FEM models and experimentally obtained models, their interfacing points may be non-matching. Solving this non-matching problem is useful to other application such as structural dynamic modification or model updating. In this work, virtual node concept is introduced. Lagrange multipliers are used to enforce the interface compatibility constraint, and interface displacement is approximated by polynomial presentation. The governing equation of whole structure is derived using hybrid variational principle. The eigenvalue of whole structure are calculated using the determinant search method. The number of degree of freedom in the eigenvalue problem can be drastically reduced to just the number of interface degree of freedom. Some numerical simulation is performed to show usefulness of synthesis method.

  • A method for determining impulsive responses and acoustic radiation for submerged shells of finite length has been presented. The method is a modal-based method, and uses a surface variational principle to obtain data in the frequency domain. The fast Fourier transform technique is used to convert the data to the time domain. The surface pressure responses of a cylindrical shell with endcaps wer compared with those of an infinite shell. It was shown that the surface pressures coincide exactly before any significant reflections from the endcaps occur. Traces of different types of waves were identified from the dispersion relations of the infinite shell. The contributions of flexural and longitudinal waves and these due to the direct radiation from the driving force to the fluid pressure were demonstrated using near-field plots. The exchange of energy between the shell and fluid was examined for shells with and without bulkheads. It was shown that a significant amount of the energy which enters the fluid returns to the shell and most of the energy is dissipated in the shell. It was also shown that the shell with bulkheads radiate significantly more energy into the far-field than the empty shell.

  • In this study, for estimating responses of a controlled structure and determining the maximum control force of velocity-dependent damping devices, three estimation models such as Fourier envelope convex model, probability model, and Newmark design spectrum are used. For this purpose, a procedure is proposed for estimating actual velocity using pseudo-velocity and this procedure considers the effects of damping ratio increased by the damping device. Time history results indicate that actual velocity should be used for estimating accurate maximum control force of damping device and Newmark design spectrum modified by the proposed equation gives the best estimation results for over all period structures.

  • Investigation is performed on the stability of general form of dynamic system under colored noise random disturbance whose damping and stiffness are varying in irregular manner along time, which is a preliminary result in the course of research on the characteristic and the control of the stochastic system. Adopted physical model is airfoil under random atmospheric disturbance, which becomes a "time-varying system" whose the governing equation is derived via F-P-K approach in stochastic sense. Control performance and effect of 'Heo-stochastic controller for colored noise' is studied. Also stochastic feature of flutter boundary is discussed as well.

  • This paper presents a position tracking control of a flexible beam using the piezoelectric actuator. This is achieved by implementing both feedforward hysteretic compensator of the actuator and PID feedback controller. The Preisach model is adopted to develop the feedforward hysteretic compensator. In the design of the compensator, estimated displacement of the piezoceramic actuator is used based on the limiting triangle database that results from collecting data of the main reversal curve and the first order ascending curves. Experimental implementation is conducted for position tracking control and performance comparison is made between a PID feedback controller without considering the effect of hysteresis, and a PID feedback controller integrated with the feedforward hysteretic compensator.

  • Design aspects of a bearing casing system of a power plant are mainly focused on the strength and weight of itself to have a more stable system. Since the rotor speed often passes through the critical speed region when the operation begins, the relation between the rotating frequency of the rotor and natural frequency of the casing is very important for a prevention of resonance. However, harmonic components above the rotating frequency have often been overlooked the design for the resonance avoidance. In this paper, it is revealed that resonance vibration is generated when the natural frequency of a bearing casing is close to the one of harmonics of basic rotating frequency(1x), and as a consequence, sensing qualify of seismoprobes attached to the bearing casing structure can be seriously damaged. In order to reduce the resonance vibration, some stiffeners are added to the casing structures. Significant reduction in the magnitude of vibration corresponding to 2x harmonic of basic rotating frequency is observed from both FE analysis and experiment.

  • Friction damping is one of the attractive vibration control technique for space structures due to its simplicity and large damping capacity. However, passive approaches for friction damping have a limitation because energy is no longer dissipated at sticking. In order to overcome this problem, semi-active control methods to adjust normal force at frictional interface have been studied in previous researches. In this paper, two semi-active friction control method is compared by simulating SDOF model of truss structure. The first approach is on-off control to maximize rate of energy dissipation, whereas the second concept is variable friction force control to minimize amplitude ratio for each half period. The maximum friction force, control variable in on-off control method, is obtained to minimize 1% settling time, and is different from optimal friction force in passive control. Simulation results show that performance of on-off control is better than that of variable friction force control in terms of settling time and controlled friction force.
