The mouthparts of the Apionidae are almost of the same structures as in the Curculionidae feeding soft plant tissues, and two subfamilies in the current system are well supported by their structures. The subfamilies Apioninae and Nanophyinae are clearly characterized as follows. In Apioninae, clypeal margin sinuate; mandibles meet anteropo-steriorly when retracted and more or less curved internally; maxillary palpi two-segmented, with large palpiger; labial palpi one-segmented; prementum parallel-sided, longer than wide. In Nanophyinae, clypeal margin with two to three notches in the middle; mandibles meet anteroposteriorly when retracted and more or less curved internally; maxillary palpi three-segmented, palpiger about as great as stipes; labial palpi two-segmented, separated to each other by the apical protrusion of prementum; prementum about as long as wide. [Insecta, Coleoptera, Comparative morphology, Mouthparts, Apionidae].
Morphological studios on the mouth parts of some aphids belonging to 5 sub-families and on the penetration of stylets into their host plants were carried out in order to find out possible relationship between mouth parts and capability of virus transmission. 1. There were no differences between the aphid species in general morphology of mouth parts. 2. Mouth parts could be observed in detail especially in Toxoptera citricidus and Chaitophorus chinensis. 3. Accessory salivary gland was larger than principal salivary gland in Toxoptera citricidus. 4. In 4 species, e. g. Chaitophorus chinensis, Myzus persicae, Aphis craccivora, Toxoptem citricidus, the stylets were usually inserted in plant tissues intercellularly and reached phloem, however, in Lachnus tropicalis only intracellularly and in Eriosoma clemalis more frequently intracellularly. 5. The stylets tracks of Eriosoma clemalis, Lachnus tropicalis and Myzus persicae were clearly visible but not in Toxoptera citricidus, Chaitophorus chinensis and Aphis craccivora. The tracks were stained with yellowish brown or red brown. 6. Saliva was seceted between the cell walls in most species and some substances in saliva seem to cause loosend cell walls. 7. The penetration of the stylets might cause physiological disturbance to host plants and could make the host plants susceptible to the plant diseases.
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the skin whitening effect of the extracts, Lycii fructus (LF), Dry-L. foilum (DLF) and Fresh-L. folium (FLF). Tyrosinase inhibition activities was 44% in DLF ethanol extracts at a $500{\mu}g/mL$. When the tyrosinase activities in B16F10 murine melanoma cell were tested, the activities in DLF ethanol extracts was 14% at a $50{\mu}g/mL$ concentration. The protein expression of microphthalmia-associated transcription factor, tyrosinase related protein 1 (TRP-1), TRP-2, and tyrosinase, which are all melanin related factors, showed that LF, DLF and FLF extracts inhibited the protein bio-synthesis in B16F10 melanoma cell. Especially the DLF extract showed greater decrease of protein expressions. Results indicate that the DLF extract tested in the present study had skin whitening activity and can be used as a function a ingredients for food and cosmetic compositions.

The aim of this study was to analyze the antioxidant properties of Lycii folium extracts prepared from different solvents. Lycii folium were extracted with water, 80% ethanol (80% EtOH), 80% methanol (80% MeOH) and 100% methanol (100% MeOH) in water bath at $40^{\circ}C$. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was evaluated using DPPH, hydroxyl and hydrogen radical scavenging activities, and SOD-liked activity. Total phenolic acid contents were 1.085 mg/mL in 100% MeOH, 1.382 mg/mL in 80% EtOH, 1.420 mg/mL in 80% MeOH and 1.084 mg/mL in water. DPPH radical scavenging activity of the extracts were 65.60% in 80% EtOH, 56.80% in 80% MeOH, 83.85% in 100% MeOH and 54.65% in water. Hydroxyl radical scavenging activities were 66.65% in 100% MeOH, 73.13% in 80% ethanol, 73.58% in 80% MeOH and 70.73% in water. Hydrogen radical scavenging activity of the extracts prepared from Lycii folium were 11.70% in 100% MeOH, 33.73% in 80% EtOH, 35.40% in 80% M eOH and 23.86% in water. SOD-liked activity of the extracts prepared from Lycii folium was 71.58% in 100% MeOH, 74.29% in 80% EtOH, 88.46% in 80% MeOH and 67.47% in water. Our result showed that Lycii folium extracts prepared from 80% methanol were found to be promising biomaterials with antioxidant effects.
As a part of studies on the development of a Gugisuen(Lycium chinense M.), which is one of the unutilization of waste resources, we investigated the composition of fatty acid and amino acid according as picking period and varieties of Gugisuen. The chemical components of Gugisuen were as follows : 1. Proximate composition of Gugisuen were Cheongyang native had the highest contents of crude lipid, crude protein, total sugar, and the contents of crude protein, total sugar, and reducing sugar was the highest picked on June 20. 2. The contents of $P_2O_5$, $K_2O$, CaO, MgO, Cu, and Mn were higher in Cheongyang native than that of other varieties. And mineral contents of Gugisuen picked on May 10 were the highest. 3. The major fatty acids were linoleic, linolenic acids, and these unsaturated fatty acids composed about 50% of total fatty acids. Fatty acid compositions between each varieties were not significant, and those components were the highest in Gugisuen picked on May 10. 4. Eighteen amino acids were identified from Gugisuen, glutamic acid, the highest content was $10.05\sim10.94%$ and these contents increased in the order to aspartic acid > glycine > alanine > leucine > lysine. The contents of serine, arginine, methionine, cystine-2 and isoleucine were higher in late harvest time and glutamic acid and tryptophane were higher in early harvest time.

The effects of Lycii fructus and Lycii folium on osteoporosis and serum cholesterol levels were tested in ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Twenty-four female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups: Sham group (sham-operated), Control group (OVX, ovariectomized model), LCF group (Ovx+Lycii fructus extract), and LCL group (OVX+Lycium folium extract). After 8 weeks, the OVX ($330{\pm}5.39$ g), LCF ($315{\pm}2.99$ g), and LCL ($318{\pm}2.06$ g) groups showed increased body weight compared with sham group ($281{\pm}1.71$ g). The levels of serum osteocalcin (OC) also increased in the LCF ($444.6{\pm}26.9$ ng/mL) and LCL ($407{\pm}18.9$ ng/mL) groups compared with the OVX group ($107{\pm}3.52$ ng/mL). The activities of serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) increased in the LCF ($108{\pm}2.7$ U/L) and LCL ($407{\pm}18.9$ ng/mL) groups compared with the OVX group ($95{\pm}2.9$ U/L). Stereomicroscopy found that the low bone density that developed in the OVX group was significantly reversed in the LCF and LCL groups after 8 weeks. We also obtained molecular-based in vivo evidence that supports a mechanism of action involving novel estrogen receptor ($ER{\alpha}$) modulator in the uterus. We found that expression of ER${\alpha}$ mRNA in the OVX rat uterus was elevated by Lycium chinense. These results suggest that Lycii fructus and Lycii folium administered to rats during 8 weeks after oophorectomy may partially recover postmenopausal osteoporosis or delay the progression of osteoporotic changes.
Purpose: This study was conducted to establish whether an ethanol extract of Lycium barbarum leaves (LLE) and an ethanol extract of Lycium barbarum leaves from which chlorophyll has been removed, denoted as LLE(Ch-), have a protective effect against hepatic fat accumulation. Methods: The inhibitory effects of LLE and LLE(Ch-) on liver fat accumulation were examined in C57BL/6 mice with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) induced by an methionine and choline deficient diet and in HepG2 cells with palmitic acid-induced fat accumulation. Results: The plasma triglyceride, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase levels were lower in the LLE(Ch-) group, whereas the plasma ALT activity decreased significantly in the LLE group. In both the LLE and the LLE(Ch-) groups, the triglyceride and cholesterol contents in the hepatic tissue were significantly reduced. A greater inhibitory effect on tissue fat accumulation was observed in the LLE(Ch-) group than in the LLE group. In HepG2 cells, LLE and LLE(Ch-) were non-toxic up to a concentration of 1,000 ㎍/mL. Compared to the control group, intracellular fat accumulation in the LLE and LLE(Ch-) groups were significantly reduced at concentrations of 200 ㎍/mL and 500 ㎍/mL, respectively. The expression of phosphorylated adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase and phosphorylated acetyl-CoA carboxylase in both LLE groups increased at the concentrations of 100 ㎍/mL and 500 ㎍/mL. The fatty acid synthase expression was suppressed in a concentration-dependent manner at 10 ㎍/mL. Conclusion: The examined two ethanol extracts of LLE inhibit hepatic fat accumulation in NAFLD. This effect was more pronounced in the LLE(Ch-) group. Therefore, these 2 extracts have an anti-steatosis effect and can be used for NAFLD treatment.
