  • This study analyzed the oral status after recording the images by using QLF-D with targets of 38 youth people with hearing impairment and hearing language impairment. In order to investigate the state of oral hygiene, plaque index (O'Leary index) and contents of investigation of the state of the teeth included the number of sound teeth, the number of caries teeth, dental caries experience and the number of filling teeth. The following results were obtained. First, women lacked the management on plaque and had more caries teeth compared with men. In terms of impairment classification, subjects with both hearing and language impairment lacked the management on plaque and had more caries teeth. Second, subjects who did not get an oral exam for one year had more caries teeth. Oral hygiene score was the highest with the brushing time for 3-4 minutes. The number of sound teeth was increased as the brushing time was increased. In addition, the oral hygiene management time was the highest when cleaning the teeth, gums and tongue at the same time. Third, it was shown that the satisfaction of oral health education by using the new equipment was high. As a result of this study, in order to improve the oral health level of impaired students, they shall be trained to manage their teeth by themselves and educated to increase their motivation and practice. Thus, it is thought that various approaches which are differentiated from existing methods are required to be tried.

  • Thirty-five edible plants were tested against oral bacteria (Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus casei, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Klebsiella pneumonia). The edible plants were extracted using 70% ethanol as a solvent. Among the thirty-five edible plants, hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa) extract was selected as an effective antibacterial source because it showed the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration. The antimicrobial substances of hibiscus extract were very stable at acidic condition and at wide range of temperature 4-75 ℃. The total polyphenol and flavonoid contents of hibiscus extract were 130.5 and 25.7 mg/g, respectively. Also hibiscus extract showed a high degree of antioxidant activity.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate effect of heme on periodontopathogens. Materials and Methods: The experiment was performed using 7 types of anaerobic bacteria present in the periodontal pocket. The bacteria were cultured using suitable medium in an anaerobic condition with or without hemin, and the growth of the bacteria was measured every 6 hours by a spectrophotometer. Results: the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis was different only by the presence or absence of hemin. The growth of other periodontopathogens except Treponema denticola was different in a hemin concentration-dependent manner. The growth of T. denticola was interfered by hemin. Conclusion: Heme may be a factor that leads dysbiosis in the microbial ecosystem of the subgingival plaque and thereby promote a periodontitis-causing environment.

  • Dental bacteria can cause gum diseases, i.e. gingivitis and periodontitis, by inducing inflammation in human gingiva. Therefore, the most effective way to prevent and treat gum diseases is the control of the inflammatory reactions induced by dental bacteria. Almost all present dental care products contain anti-bacterial agents to eliminate dental bacteria. However, recent studies report that even heat-killed dental bacteria can induce the inflammation responses in oral cells. Therefore, the method using anti-bacterial agents should be improved for better anti-inflammatory effect and the effective natural anti-inflammatory substances need to be found. In addition, the mechanisms of gingival inflammation should be elucidated. In this study, we tried to find out the mechanism of the gingival inflammation and effective natural anti-inflammatory substances with human gingival epithelial cells and Prevotella intermedia which is well known as a typical dental bacteria inducing gingivitis and periodontitis. In results, Prevotell intermedia initiated the gingival inflammation response by stimulating gingival epithelial cells to release an inflammatory cytokine, IL-8. Furthermore, the inflammation by Prevotella intermedia is related to COX-2, AP-1, and TNF-${\alpha}$ pathways. Green tea extract could effectively suppress the inflammatory responses induced by Prevotella intermedia. We find out the effective natural substance for the improvement of gum diseases by studying the mechanism of the gingival inflammation induced by dental bacteria.

  • Dentifrices comtaining SLS of 2.2% and 0.0% were applied to 60 subjects for 4 weeks in this study. Dentifrice is used for salivary and oral bacteria amount change according to its SLS contents in toothpaste. The results were as follows. Anaysis of LSL contents befor and after the after experiment in salivary and bacterial count oral cavity didn't show significant difference in time interval. There was no correlation between salivary flow rate and bacterial count in the oral cavity according to content of SLS. Dentifrice of 2.2% content satisfied the subjects much more than that of 0.0% content(p<0.001).

  • To maintain good oral hygiene, plaque control is essential and the most common and effective method is appropriate brushing. However accurate brushing is so difficult for children that the importance of brush is getting higher. We investigated the effect of tooth brushing instruction in plaque control for 40 children who came to Kyunghee university dental hospital, department of pediatric dentistry. We examined basic information by self-assessment, evaluated plaque index, tooth & tongue cleanness, malodor index for 4 times and compared values before and after tooth brushing instruction. Plaque index decreased(p<0.01) and tooth & tongue cleanness increased(p<0.01). There were no significant differences in mal-odor index. In conclusion, tooth brushing instruction is effective in removing dental plaque and its beneficial role is highly expected in establishing children's good oral hygiene.

  • As the age increases, the oral cavity, that is, the teeth and periodontium, also begin to age, and accordingly, a preparation process is required. The preparation process is an important period for oral health management to start continuously with oral health education consisting of knowledge, attitude, and behavior from the 20s. Therefore, to design a clinical dental hygiene course for patients who visited a dental clinic in Gyeonggi-do and received continuous care in an oral health care room after treatment, we tried to analyze the data of the dental hygiene assessment. As a dental hygiene assessment tool, based on personal information and general medical history, dental visit experience, bleeding on probing(BOP), bad breath measurement, phase contrast microscopy, and O'Leary index were performed. The number of subjects who had dental visits was 75.4% and those without experience were 24.6%, and as a result of the periodontal examination, generally bleeding was found in 76.3%. In preventive oral care, the stage of dental hygiene assessment in the 20s is an important first step. From this point on, it is an important time to be systematically habituated so that you can take responsibility for your own oral condition. Therefore, in this study, the results of dental hygiene assessment through oral examinations of subjects in their 20s are derived and presented as basic data for the development of dental hygiene performance competency of dental hygienists during the clinical dental hygiene process in oral health education and oral health management.

  • The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the relationship between regular interdental cleaning and periodontal condition. A total of 319 pregnant women were recruited at 21 to 24 weeks of gestation. Information on demographics, health status and health behaviors including regulary use of interdental cleaning aids, that can influence periodontal condition was collected. Full mouth periodontal probing was performed. Periodontitis was defined as CAL of 4.0 mm or greater on 2 or more sites not on the same tooth. Gingivitis was defined as 15 percent and more sites showed bleeding on probing. Gingival crevice fluid sample was collected for bacterial analysis. We studied a total of 319 subjects, comprised of 116 subjects who use interdental cleaning device regularly and 203 subjects who didn't. Subjects who do not use interdental cleaning regularly had 2.3 times higher risk of gingivitis and 2.7 times of periodontitis, 2.3 times more amount of P. gingivalis. There was a significant relationship between regular interdental cleaning and periodontal condition in Korea.
