  • Purpose: For orthodontic bracket bonding, light curing resin cement is widely used because the process is convenient, and it can be polymerized at the desired time. This study compared the difference of bonding strength of orthodontic resin cement according to storage condition. Materials and Methods: After acid etching the bovine enamel surface with 37% phosphoric acid, 15 orthodontic brackets for mandible incisors were bonded with Ortho Connect and Orthomite LC according to following three conditions; 1) Immediate after 4℃ refrigeration for 3 months (IR), 2) One day room temperature after 4℃ refrigeration for 3 months (OR), 3) Room temperature for 3 months (RT). The shear bond strength was measured with a universal material tester and failure pattern of the specimen was observed. Two-way ANOVA and One-way ANOVA were used at the 95% significance level. Results: Ortho Connect that was applied immediately after refrigeration showed the maximum shear bond strength. Orthomite that was applied immediately after refrigeration showed the lowest shear bond strength, and the group stored at room temperature for three months showed the highest shear bond strength, and the difference between the two groups was significant. Conclusion: Ortho Connect can be used without worrying about bond strength even if it is used immediately after refrigeration, but Orthomite should be kept at room temperature sufficiently after refrigeration.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of surface sealants on the surface roughness of composite resins. Materials and Methods: The study used microfilled composite resin (Metafil CX, Sun Medical Co.) and hybrid composite resin (AeliteTM LS posterior, Bisco). Sixty specimens (8 mm in diameter and 4 mm in height) of each composite resin type were prepared and divided into 3 groups. Each specimen was ground with 600, 1000, and 2000-grit sandpaper. The Surface roughness (Ra) values were measured using a surface roughness tester (SJ-301, Mytutoyo) before and after surface sealant application. Surface sealants, BisCoverTM LV (Bisco), Optiguard® (Kerr), and Seal-n-ShineTM (Pulpdent), were applied to the specimens, as instructed and observed by scanning electron microscope (JSM-7500, JEOL) and atomic force microscope (MultiMode IV, Veeco Instruments). Results: Specimens ground with 600-grit sandpaper coated with surface sealants exhibited significantly lower Ra values than the untreated group (P < 0.05). Specimens ground with 1000 and 2000-grit sandpaper showed statistically no difference. There was no significant difference in surface roughness among BisCoverTM LV, Optiguard®, and Seal-n-ShineTM. SEM and AFM revealed remarkably decreased microdefects on the surfaces of composite resins after surface sealant application. Conclusion: Surface sealants can influence surface roughness when applied on the rough surface of composite resins but not on highly polished composite resins.

  • Purpose: A mismatched size in the post and post space is a common problem during post-fixation. Since this discordance affects the bonding strength of the fiber-reinforced composite resin post (FRC Post), a corresponding luting agent is required. The aim of this study was to evaluate the bonding strength of the FRC post according to the fitness of the fiber post and the type of luting agent. Materials and Methods: Thirty mandibular premolar were endodontic-treated and assigned to two groups according to their prepared post space: Fitting (F) and Mismatching (M). These groups were further classified into three subgroups according to their luting agent: RelyX Unicem (ReX), Luxacore dual (Lux), and Duolink (Duo). A push-out test was performed to measure the push-out bond strengths. The fractured surfaces of each cross-section were then examined, and the fracture modes were classified. Results: In the ReX and Duo subgroups, the F group had a higher mean bond strength; however, the Lux subgroup had no significant difference between the F and M groups. In the analysis of the failure modes, the ReX subgroup had only adhesive failures between the cement and dentin. Conclusion: The result of this study showed that the bond strength of an FRC post was influenced by the type of luting agent and the mismatch between the diameter of the prepared post space and that of the post.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to assess the antimicrobial efficacy of an 810-nm infrared diode laser with indocyanine green (ICG) against Staphylococcus aureus on sandblasted, large grit, and acid-etched (SLA) titanium surfaces, comparing its effectiveness with alternative chemical decontamination modalities. Materials and Methods: Biofilms of S. aureus ATCC 25923 were cultured on SLA titanium disks for 48 hours. The biofilms were divided into five treatment groups: control, chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX), tetracycline (TC), ICG, and 810-nm infrared diode laser with ICG (ICG-PDT). After treatment, colony-forming units were quantified to assess surviving bacteria, and viability was confirmed through confocal laser-scanning microscope (CLSM) imaging. Results: All treated groups exhibited a statistically significant reduction in S. aureus (P < 0.05), with notable efficacy in the CHX, TC, and ICG-PDT groups (P < 0.01). While no statistical difference was observed between TC and CHX, the ICG-PDT group demonstrated superior bacterial reduction. CLSM images revealed a higher proportion of dead bacteria stained in red within the ICG-PDT groups. Conclusion: Within the limitations, ICG-PDT effectively reduced S. aureus biofilms on SLA titanium surfaces. Further investigations into alternative decontamination methods and the clinical impact of ICG-PDT on peri-implant diseases are warranted.

  • The aim of this study was to compare and analyze wear resistance of acrylic resin tooth in denture opposing to different types of restoration materials. Also, it aimed to compare and analyze the hardness of three various types of resin artificial teeth when using five different types of denture detergents. In this study three types of artificial teeth were used. As ordinary acrylic resin tooth $Trubyte^{(R)}Biotone^{(R)}$ (Dentsply, U.S.A.) was used, and as high hardness resin tooth Endura $Posterio^{(R)}$ (Shofu, Japan) and Physio $Duracross^{(R)}$ (Nissin, Japan) were used. To compare wear resistance, gold alloy, dental porcelain, and composite resin were used as opposing restorations. In addition, with three types of resin tooth stated above, five types of denture detergents, which are $Yuhanrox^{(R)}$ (Yuhanclorox, Korea), $Polident^{(R)}$ (Yuhan Co., Korea), $Cidex^{(R)}OPA$ (Johnson & Johnson Medical Co., Korea), $Hexamedin^{(R)}$ (Bukwang Pharm Co., Korea) and Daihan sterile $water^{(R)}$ (Daihan Pharm Co., Korea) were used to compare and analyze the effects denture detergents have on the surface hardness. The results of this study were as follow : 1. When composite resin and dental porcelain were used as the opposing restorations, $Trubyte^{(R)}$ $Biotone^{(R)}$, Endura $Posterio^{(R)}$, Physio $Duracross^{(R)}$ in ascending order showed decrease of cusp height with significant difference (p<0.05). 2. When gold alloy was used as opposing restoration, there was decrease in the cusp height in order of $Trubyte^{(R)}Biotone^{(R)}$, Endura $Posterio^{(R)}$, Physio $Duracross^{(R)}$ and $Trubyte^{(R)}$ $Biotone^{(R)}$ especially showed significant decrease in high cusp height as compared to two other types of artificial tooth (p<0.05). 3. When composite resin, gold alloy and dental porcelain were used as opposing restorations, $Trubyte^{(R)}$ $Biotone^{(R)}$, Endura $Posterio^{(R)}$, Physio $Duracross^{(R)}$ in order decreased greatly in weight and these three materials showed significant difference (p<0.05). 4. Comparing the experiment values, decrease in strength had significant difference in all resin artificial teeth before and after the denture detergents were used (p<0.05). 5. When resin artificial teeth were subsided in $Yuhanrox^{(R)}$, $Cidex^{(R)}OPA$, and $Hexamedin^{(R)}$, $Trubyte^{(R)}$ $Biotone^{(R)}$, Endura $Posterio^{(R)}$, Physio $Duracross^{(R)}$ in order showed decrease in hardness, and $Trubyte^{(R)}$ $Biotone^{(R)}$ especially showed significant high decrease hardness as to other two types of artificial teeth (p<0.05). Therefore, Physio $Duracross^{(R)}$ seems to have superior wear resistance, and together with Endura $Posterio^{(R)}$, it presents excellent hardness as compared to $Trubyte^{(R)}$ $Biotone^{(R)}$. However, since this study is fragmentary, it should be given careful consideration and more study need to be done before making a definitive conclusion.

  • As implant treatment has become popular, lots of different shapes and materials of the implant upper component have been supplied. And there are also diverse reports about failures including loosening of the abutment screw which is one of the most common reason. Purpose : The purpose of this study is to find out how different screw tightening orders and methods influence on screw loosening according to the different connection systems. The upper component was fabricated by casting method. After fabricating master models that are precisely attached to the upper component, 5 experimental models each for the external connection system and internal connection system were fabricated using splinting impression technique. First, to find out the influence of the screw tightening order, screws were tightened in 3 orders; 1-2-3-4, 2-3-1-4, 2-4-3-1. After tightening, removal torque values (RTV) of each group was measured. And also to find out the influence of screw tightening method, a model with 2-3-1-4 screw tightening order was tightened with 30 Ncm at one time(1-step method) and the RTV was compared with the same order group (2-3-1-4) in the 2 step method. In the external connection system, RTV appeared significantly lower in group 2-3-1-4 than group 2-4-3-1 (p<0.05). And also in the internal connection system, the RTV of group 2-3-1-4 appeared significantly lower than that of group 2-4-3-1 and 1-2-3-4 (p<0.05). When comparing the tightening number of the screw without considering the screw tightening order, the first tightened screw appeared significantly higher RTV than the second one in the external connection system (p<0.05), however there was no significant difference from the first tightened screw to the last tightened screw in the internal connection system. And there was no statistically significant difference between the two screw tightening methods in both internal and external connection system. In the comparison of external and internal connection system, each RTV appeared 16.27 Ncm and 14.25 Ncm and appeared as a statistically significant difference (p<0.05). There was a significant difference in RTV measured according to the screw tightening order. The lowest RTV appeared in the groups started tightening from the middle. There was also a significant difference in RTV between the two connection system groups. A further study is needed to find out the influence factors in RTV and also a study is required related to the load condition.
