The Relation of Fracture Properties to Hydraulic Conductivity in Volcanic Rocks of the Northern Yosu Area (여수 북부지역 화산암의 단열특성과 수리전도도와의 관계)

  • Groundwater flow in a fractured rock mass is related to the geometric characteristics of the fracture system. The objective of this study aims to analyze the probabilistic density function of fracture properties md their relations to the hydraulic conductivity in volcanic rocks of the northern Yosu area. Fracture characteristics were investigated by core logging and acoustic televiewer logging in four boreholes and the hydraulic conductivity was obtained from the constant pressure injection and fall-off tests. The 303 fractures were grouped into three sets by their orientation and three fracture types by the degree of opening in aperture. As a result of the study, the hydraulic conductivity in the test section intersected by open and semi-open fractures, conductive fractures, and set 1 fractures was very high, while closed fractures did rarely affect the hydraulic conductivity. It was recognized that the hydraulic conductivity in a fractured rock mass was preferentially affected by the aperture size of conductive fractures and fracture intersection frequency and size, secondly.

  • The motivation of this study comes from the problem recognition that the headway of passing vehicle in signalized intersections can not be merely determined by departing sequence. Traffic speed and headway data of passing vehicles in signalized intersection have been obtained by using magnetic detectors(NC 97) and detecting program, and the data was analyzed. Without special treatment, the model established on passing behavior of vehicles was meaningless from statistical view point. Hence, special treatments such as filtering (upper 85% offensive driver driven vehicle's) and log scaling of data were carried on. With this new data, meaningful model (where coefficient of determination is 0.91) was established. This model explained the fact that vehicle headway in signalized intersection is affected by speed and headway of previous vehicle and speed of itself.

Development of Capacity Models Based on the Travel Characteristics at Roundabout (회전교차로의 통행특성에 근거한 용량 모형 개발)

  • Recently, many studies have been undertaken regarding the of introduction at roundabout in Korea. The studies related to roundabout capacity, however, is insufficient. Thus, the goal of this study is to develop a capacity model based on real data. The main results are as follows. First, roundabout capacity in Korea was analyzed using HCM capacity model based on critical gap and following time estimated by Probit model. Entry capacity in Korea was evaluated to be similar to that of the U.S in the case of low circulating flow($Q_c$), but higher in the case of high circulating flow($Q_c$). Second, the basic capacity models in Korea were newly developed based on real traffic data. Third, models that consider geometric structure were developed based on the basic models. Finally, all of the developed models mentioned above were analyzed to be statistically significant.

Evaluation for Rock Cleavage Using Distribution of Microcrack Spacings (II) (미세균열의 간격 분포를 이용한 결의 평가(II))

  • The characteristics of the rock cleavage in Jurassic granite from Geochang were analysed. The evaluation for the three directions of rock cleavages was performed using the parameters such as (1) frequency of microcrack spacing(N), (2) total spacing(${\leq}1mm$), (3) mean spacing($S_{mean}$), (4) difference value($S_{mean}-S_{median}$) between mean spacing($S_{mean}$) and median spacing($S_{median}$), (5) density of spacing(${\rho}$), (6) difference value between two exponents for the whole range of the diagrams(${\lambda}_H-{\lambda}_L$), (7) mean value of exponent(${\lambda}_M$), (8) mean value of exponential constant($a_M$), (9) difference value between two exponents for the section under the initial points of intersection(${\lambda}t_H-{\lambda}t_L$), (10) mean value of exponent(${\lambda}t_M$) and (11) mean value of exponential constant($at_M$). The results of correlation analysis between the values of parameters for three rock cleavages and those for three planes are as follows. The values of (I) parameters(1, 2, 7 and 8) and (II) parameters(3, 4 and 5) are in orders of (I) H(hardway, (H1 + H2)/2) < G(grain, (G1 + G2)/2) < R(rift, (R1 + R2)/2) and (II) R < G < H. On the contrary, the values of the above two groups(I~II) of parameters for three planes show reverse orders. Besides, the values of parameter $6({\lambda}_H-{\lambda}_L)$, parameter $9({\lambda}t_H-{\lambda}t_L)$, parameter $10({\lambda}t_M)$ and parameter $11(at_M)$ for three planes are in orders of R(rift plane, (G1 + H2)/2) < H(hardway plane, (R2 + G2)/2) < G(grain plane, (R1 + H2)/2), H < G < R, H < R < G and R < H < G, respectively. The values of the above four parameters for three rock cleavages show the various orders of R < H < G, R < H < G, H < G < R and H < G < R, respectively. Meanwhile, the spacing values equivalent to the initial points of contact and intersection between the two directions of diagrams were derived. The above spacing values for three rock cleavages are in order of rift(R1 and R2) < grain(G1 and G2) < hardway(H1 and H2). The spacing values for three planes are in order of rift plane(G1 and H1) < hardway plane(R2 and G2) < grain plane(R1 and H2). In particular, the intersection angles for three rock cleavages and three planes are in order of rift and rift plane < hardway and hardway plane < grain and grain plane. Consequently, the two diagrams of rift(R1 and R2) and rift plane(G1 and H1) show higher frequency of the point of contact and intersection. These characteristics of change were derived through the general chart for three planes and three rock cleavages. Lastly, the correlation analysis through the values of parameters along with the distribution pattern is useful for discriminating three quarrying planes.

The Selection of Optimal Interchange Types by Quantifying the User Costs and Construction Costs of Ramps (연결로의 사용자 비용과 공사비 계량화를 통한 입체교차로 최적형식 선정 기법)

  • It is stated in the highway geometric design guide that expressway interchange types should be selected considering a set of input variables including travel demand, topography, construction cost and interchange spacing. However, this selection method has a problem of providing different interchange types even for the same input variables depending upon different applications of engineers discretion. A procedure that produces consistent results is necessary and this paper presents the development of an efficient and reliable procedure based on the quantification of road user costs and construction costs on interchanges. To develop this procedure, a survey of existing expressway interchange types in South Korea was made and 10 basic interchange types and 52 supplementary interchange types were identified. To relate road user costs and construction costs to these interchange types, this research uses two method. First, interchange types were expressed by a set of ramp configurations. Second, road user benefits and construction costs associated with these different interchange types were formulated based on the current national guide of the expressway economical analysis. As a result, it was proved that an interchange type to provide minimum costs could be selected consistently and this research result should be useful for future expressway geometric designs.

Development of Real-time Traffic Signal Control Strategy for Coordinated Signalized Intersections under V2I Communication Environment (V2I 통신환경을 활용한 연동교차로 교통신호 실시간 제어 연구)

  • This study was initiated to develop an optimal signal control algorithm for coordinated signalized intersections using individual vehicle's information which can be collected in a format of prove vehicle data (PVD) via V2I (Vehicle to Infrastructure) communication environment. For developing this signal optimization algorithm, three modules were developed for phase group length computation, split distribution, and phase sequence assignment. The simulation analysis using the microscopic simulation model, Vissim, was conducted for evaluating the effectiveness of the developed algorithm. The analysis result represented that the performance of the developed algorithm is far superior to that of the fixed coordinated signal control method which is the most common signal control method for coordinated signalized intersections in Korea.

Estimation of Acceleration Rates of Bus and Passenger car at Signalized Intersections (신호교차로에서 버스와 승용차의 발진가속도 측정)

  • The maximum and mean acceleration rates of vehicles estimated from the stopping conditions at signalized intersections provided an important clue to analyze traffic accident investigation when there was a dispute about legal liability such as first entering vehicle at the intersection, etc. This paper provided the maximum and mean acceleration rates of vehicles reflecting current traffic conditions in Korea through field studies. The mean acceleration rates of vehicles at stopline were measured up to 50m at the intervals of 5m. Results showed that the mean acceleration rate for bus was found to be $1.011^m/s^2{\sim}1.314^m/s^2$(0.1g~0.13g), and for passenger car was $1.548^m/s^2{\sim}1.818^m/s^2$(0.16g~0.19g). Statistical test results indicated that the observed differences from vehicle types and vehicle positions were statistically significant for the all ranges tested. It is expected that the accuracy of accident investigation practice will be improved by applying the acceleration rate values presented in this paper.

  • The paper presents a method for decision the optimal cycle time during the vehicle traffic control in single intersection with AHP. To solve this uncertainty optimization problem, the optimization index in the form of linear addition and fuzzy measurement is assumed and fuzzy integral is used. Examples of solution for two cases of optimal cycle time in two traffic controller are presented and compared.

A Study on Friction and Wear of Foam Rubbers (발포고무의 마찰 및 마모특성에 관한연구)

  • 겨울용 타이어인 '발포고무 타이어'의 트레드에 적용되는 발포고무의 물성과 마찰 및 마모특성을 조사하였다. 천연고무인 SMR-CV60과 합성고무인 BR-01(Cis-1, 4 Polybutadiene)을 70:30 비율로 혼합하였고 발포제로는 개질화된 azodicarbonamide (상품 명:UNICELL AD#2)을 변량 첨가하여 다양한 발포도의 발포고무를 준비하였다. 발포도의 증 가로 발포고무의 Young's modulus와 파괴에너지는 점진적으로 감소하였으나 Tan $\delta$ 는 일정한 값을 유지하였다. 매끄러운 유리표면위에서 높은 마찰계수를 보인 발포고무는 발포 도의 증가로 크게 감소하였고 거친 표면일수록 마찰계수는 상승하였다. 이같은 마찰계수의 증감경향이 교차되는 발포도는 30~40%이었다. $0^{\circ}C$에서의 마찰계수도 유리 표면에서감소하 고 거친표면에서 상승하는 경향을 보였으며 증감경향이 교차하는 발포도는 20%로 낮아졌 다. 마찰표면을 마그네시아 분말로 처리하면 전반적으로 마찰계수는 감소하였고 발포도의 크기에 관계없이 마찰표면이 거칠수록 큰 마찰계수를 나타내었다. 발포고무의 발포도가 커 지면 마모손실량도 비례하여 증가하였으며 발포도가 낮은 고무에서는 비교적 규칙적인 융기 간격이 보였으나 발포도가 30%이상으로 되면 불규칙적인 마모표면과 더불어 많은 마모 부 스러기가 관찰되었다.

Remote field Eddy Current Technique Development for Gap Measurement of Neighboring Tubes of Nuclear Fuel Channel in Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (중수로 핵연료채널과 인접관의 간격측정을 위한 원거리장 와전류검사 기술개발)

  • Liquid Injection Nozzle(LIN) tube and Calandria tube(CT) in pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) are .ross-aligned horizontally. These neighboring tubes can contact each other due to the sag of the calandria tube resulting from the irradiation creep and thermal creep, and fuel load, etc. In order to judge the contact which might be the safety concern, the remote field eddy current (RFEC) technology is applied for the gap measurement in this paper. LIN can be detected by inserting the RFEC probe into pressure tube (PT) at the crossing point directly. To obtain the optimal conditions of the RFEC inspection, the sensitivity, penetration and noise signals are considered simultaneously. The optimal frequency and coil spacing are 1kHz and 200mm respectively. Possible noises during LIN signal acquisition are caused by lift-off, PT thickness variation, and gap variation between PT and CT. The simulated noise signals were investigated by the Volume Integral Method(VIM). Signal analysis on the voltage plane describes the amplitude and shape of LIN and possible defects at several frequencies. All the RFEC measurements in the laboratory were done in variance with the CT/LIN gap and showed the relationship between the LIN gap and the signal parameters by analyzing the voltage plane signals.
