  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of water, saliva and blood contamination on the bonding strength of metal brackets with a self-etching primer/adhesive to enamel. Ninety-six extracted human teeth were divided into four groups. The brackets were bonded to enamel with a self- etching primer (3M/Unitek Dental Products. Monorovia California) according to one of four protocols. The teeth were bonded in a dry condition (group D) or in contamination with distilled water (group W), artificial saliva (group S). or fresh human blood (group B) Shear bond strengths were tested using an Instron Universal testing machine. After debonding. bracket and tooth surfaces were examined with a stereomicroscope. In each group, four samples were selected and examined with a Scanning electron microscope of the prepared enamel surface and resin-enamel interlace. The results obtained were summarized as follows: Shear bond Strength if group D $(15.22{\pm}2.86MPa)$ and W $(15.20{\pm}3.85 MPa)$ Were higher than in group B$(12.56{\pm}2.94MPa)$ (p<0.05). There were no statistical differences in the shear bond strengths between groups D. W and S (p>0.05). There was a tendency to have less residual adhesive remaining on the enamel surfaces of group B than group D. The SEW morphology of group D and W showed a more roughened etching pattern than group S and B. Water or saliva contamination on bending of orthodontic brackets with Transbond plus self etching primer had almost no influence on bond strength In this study, the blood contaminated group showed the lowest bond strength, but it was above the clinically acceptable bond strength (5.9-7.8 MPa, Reynold, 1975). The results of this study suggest that acceptable clinical bond strengths can be obtained in wet conditions when self-etching adhesives are used.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bond strength of orthodontic brackets bonded to metal bar with chemically cured adhesive (Ortho-one, Bisco Co, USA) in various types and directions of force application. Three types of metal bracket with different bracket base configurations; Micro-Loc base(Tomy Co, Japan), Chessboard base(Daesung Co, Korea), Non-etched Foil-Mesh base(Dentaurum, Germany); were used in this study. Peel, shear, tensile bond strengths were measured by universal testing machine and compared each other. The peel force directions applied were $0^{\circ},\;15^{\circ},\;30^{\circ},\;45^{\circ},\;60^{\circ},\;75^{\circ},\;90^{\circ}$ And then, in consideration of the different surface area of the bracket bases, the bond strength Per unit area were calculated and compared. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1. The bond strengths according to the types and the directions of the forces were greatest at the shear forces in all three bracket base configuration groups(p<0.01). 2. As the peel force direction grew higher in degree, peel bond strength decreased. The Patterns of peel bond strength change according to force direction was similar in all three bracket base configurations. The minimum bond strength was 60 degree-peel bond strengths in all three bracket base configurations. 3. In Micro-Loc base group, minimum peel bond strength$(_{60}PBS)$ was in $29\%$ level of shear bond strength and $52\%$ level of tensile bond strength. In Chessboard base group, $_{60}PBS$ was in $34\%$ level of shear bond strength and $61\%$ level of tensile bond strength. In Non-etched Foil-Mesh base group, $_{60}PBS$ was in $34\%$ level of shear bond strength and $55\%$ level of tensile bond strength. 4. The bond strengths per unit area were lowest in Non-etched Foil-Mesh base group and highest in Chessboard base group(p<0.05). However, there were no differences in shear bond strength, tensile bond strength, $75^{\circ}\;and\;90^{\circ}$ per unit area between Micro-Loc and Chessboard base groups.

KCl(2.5, 10, 40 그리고 160mM) 그리고 $MgCl_2$(0.1, 0.4, 1.6, 그리고 6.4mM) 용액에 각각 매달았다.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of surface conditioning with $10\%$ polyacrylic acid, etching with $38\%$ phosphoric acid, and polishing with a slurry of pumice on shear bond strengths of light-cured glass ionomer cement, chemically cured glass ionomer cement, and a composite resin to enamel, and to observe the failure patterns of bracket bondings. Shear bond strengths of glass ionomer cements were compared with that of a composite resin. Metal brackets were bonded on the extracted human bicuspids after enamel surface treatments, and samples were immersed in the $37^{\circ}C$ distilled water bath, and shear bond strengths of glass ionomer cements and a composite resin were measured on the Instron machine after 24hrs passed, and the deboned samples were measured in respect of adhesive remnant index. Scanning electron micrographs were taken of enamel surfaces after various treatments. The data were evaluated and tested by ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range test, and those results were as follows. 1. Shear bond strength of light-cured glass ionomer cement showed statistically higher than that of chemically cured glass ionomer cement. 2. Shear bond strengths of light-cured and chemically cured glass ionomer cements to enamel treated with $10\%$ polyacrylic acid and $38\%$ phosphoric acid showed statistically higher than those with a slurry of pumice. 3. According to scanning electron micrographs, enamel surface conditioned with $10\%$ polyacrylic acid is slightly etched and cleaned, that etched with $38\%$ phosphoric acid is severely etched, and that polished with a slurry of pumice is irregulary scretched and not completely cleaned. 4. After debonding, light-cured glass ionomer cement to enamel treated with $10\%$ polyacrylic acid showed less residual materials on the enamel solace than composite resin to enamel etched with $38\%$ phosphoric acid. 5. There was no significant difference in the shear bond strength of light-cured glass ionomer cement to enamel treated with $10\%$ polyacrylic acid and that of composite resin to enamel etched with $38\%$ Phosphoric acid.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare changes in frictional resistance between the bracket and wire under dry and wet conditions according to a change in moment. Methods: A stainless steel bracket of $0.022"{\times}0.028"$ slot, and $0.019"{\times}0.025"$ stainless steel, beta-titanium, and nickel-titanium wires were used. A 10 mm length lever was attached to the test (sliding) brackets to generate a moment. The experimental model was designed to allow tipping until contacts were established between the wire and the mesiodistal edges of the bracket slot. The moment was generated by suspending a 100 g or 200 g weight on the end of the lever. The moments applied were $1000g{\cdot}mm\;(100g{\times}10mm)\;and\;2000g{\cdot}mm\;(200g{\times}10mm)$. The test brackets were ligated with elastomeric ligature for a constant ligation force and the fixed brackets were ligated with stainless steel ligature. Brackets were moved along the wire by means of an universal testing machine, and maximum frictional resistances were recorded. Results: Stainless steel wire showed least frictional resistance and there was no significant difference between beta-titanium and nickel-titanium except at $2000g{\cdot}mm$ moment in wet conditions. Frictional resistance of all wires increased as the moment increased from $1000g{\cdot}mm\;to\;2000g{\cdot}mm$. Under wet conditions, the frictional resistance of stainless steel wires increased in both $1000g{\cdot}mm\;and\;2000g{\cdot}mm$ moment conditions, but frictional resistance of nickel-titanium and beta-titanium increased only in $2000g{\cdot}mm$ conditions. Conclusion: These results indicated that various conditions influence on frictional resistance. Therefore, laboratory studies of frictional resistance should simulate clinical situation.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the shear bond strength and the anticariogenicity of glass ionomer cement with conventional bonding resin and fluoride releasing resin. After the shear bond strength test, scanning electron microscopic observation was performed for the evaluation of the fracture patterns in each group. Under the polarizing light microscope, artificially induced carious lesions were evaluated and the lesion depths of the samples were measured using image analyzing program(Image-Pro $PLUS^{TM}$, USA). 50 sound maxillary premolars were used for the bond strength test and another 30 for the anticariogenic test. Data collected were analyzed statistically using Oneway-ANOVA and Scheffe test. The results were as follows: 1. Glass ionomer groups(G-III, IV, V) generally showed the lower bond strength values than resin groups(G-I, II). 2. Among the two resin groups, G-I showed the higher bond strength than G-II without statistically significant difference between them(p>.05). 3. Within glass ionomer groups, statistical significance was found between G-III and G-V with the superior bond strength in G-V (p<.05). 4. Under the SEM, adhesive failure was the predominant fracture pattern in G-I and II, whereas cohesive failures were mainly observed in G-III. In G-IV and V, mixed type of pattern where the both fracture patterns coexisted within samples could be seen. 5. In evaluation of the depth of artificially developed carious lesion, glass ionomer group showed shallower depth than resin groups with statistical significance between G-III and G-I, II(p<.05). Among resin groups, fluoride releasing resin(G-II) showed the shallower depth than conventional resin(G-I)(p<.05).

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a self-etching primer on the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets and on the failure pattern of bracket-adhesive interfaces in dry or wet condition. Brackets were bonded to extracted human teeth according to one of three experimental protocols. In the Group P, teeth were etched with $37\%$ phosphoric acid. After the Transbond XT Primer was applied onto the etched surfaces, the brackets were bonded with Transbond XT(3M, Unitek, Monrovia, Calif) and light cured for 40 seconds. In the Group SD, a self-etching primer(3M, Unitek, Monrovia, Calif) was placed on the enamel for 3 seconds and gently evaporated with air, as suggested by the manufacturer. The brackets were then bonded with Transbond XT as in the Group P In the Group SW, artificial saliva was applied to the enamel surface for 10 seconds to allow complete hydration of the surface before application self-etching primer The brackets were then bonded following the procedures of Group SD. Each group was divided into 2 sub-groups(0.5h, 24h) according to debonding time. Shear bond strengths were measured by Instron universal testing machine. After debonding, the teeth and brackets were examined under scanning electron microscope and assessed with the adhesive remnant index. The result obtained were summarized as follows ; 1. The shear bond strengths were high enough to use clinically in all testing groups, but the shear bond strengths of Group SD and SW were significantly lower than Group P(p<0.05). 2. With respect to comparison of debonding time, 24h debonding samples exhibited heigher shear bond strength than 0.5h debonding samples in Group P, SD and SW(p<0.05). 3. In the self etching primer groups(Group SD and Group SW), there was no significant difference in mean shear bond strength between under dry and wet state(p>0.05). 4. There was a greater frequency of ARI score of 0 and 1 with the Group P. On the other hand, there was a higher frequency of ARI scores of 2 and 3 with Group SD and Group SW(p<0.05).

  • This study was experienced in order to obtain the shear bond strength of orthodontic bracket adhesives under the blood contamination that can be occurred during the procedure of bracket bonding under window opening surgery. As a result of this study, shear bond strength of all glass ionomer groups were lower than resin cement groups. However, the strength of uncontaminated and post-contaminated group of glass ionomer was strong enough to perform an orthodontic forced eruption. This study revealed that during a window opening surgery, glass ionomer without etching procedure is available in order to bond a bracket if surface of teeth is not pre-contaminated by blood before the adhesive application. Both simple procedure and less adhesives remnant after bonding failure could make light-cured glass ionomer cement the ultimate choice for racket bonding.

  • The purpose of this study was to search for an appropriate method of coating $TiO_2$ on orthodontic appliances. $TiO_2$ thin films were deposited on orthodontic wires and brackets using sol-gel, CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) and PE-CVD (Plasma Enhanced-CVD) methods. The roughness of $TiO_2$-coated surfaces was investigated via scanning electron microscope (SEM) and adhesive strength of $TiO_2$ thin films was measured by adhesive tape pull test. Methylene blue degradation test was carried out to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ and the corrosion resistance of $TiO_2$ thin films against fluoride solution was also analyzed by observing the surfaces of $TiO_2$-coated wires and brackets via SEM after immersion in sodium fluoride solution. Through the comparison of properties and photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ thin films according to the coating methods, the following results were obtained. Smoother surfaces of $TiO_2$ thin films were generated by CVD or PE-CVD methods than through the sol-gel method or the control. Adhesive strength of the $TiO_2$ thin films was highest in PE-CVD and gradually became lower in the order of CVD, then the sol-gel method. Photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ thin films on methylene blue was the highest in PE-CVD and gradually became lower in the order of CVD, then the sol-gel method. Corrosion resistance of $TiO_2$ thin films against fluoride solution was stronger in CVD and PE-CVD methods than in the sol-gel method. The results of this study suggest that the CVD or PE-CVD methods is more appropriate than the sol-gel method for $TiO_2$ coating on orthodontic wires and brackets.
