The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a scale of Korean elementary teachers' mathematics beliefs. We examined 299 elementary teachers' mathematical beliefs using 30 items, out of which 12 items covered beliefs about the nature of mathematics and 18 items covered beliefs about mathematics teaching and learning. In the first stage, we performed exploratory factor analysis using 149 survey data to examine the factor structure. In the second stage, we performed confirmatory factor analysis using 150 survey data. Building upon previous studies, we examined the construct validity of three different models to find the best factor structure. The study results indicate that the four-factor model with 14 items provides the best fit for the data: transmissive view of mathematics, constructivist view of mathematics, transmissive view of teaching and learning, and constructivist view of teaching and learning. The findings of the study reveal that each factor has adequate internal consistency and reliability. These results confirm that the beliefs scale is a reliable and valid measurement tool to measure Korean elementary teachers' mathematical beliefs. The implications of the study are discussed.
The purpose of the present study is to develop instrument of mathematical belief of middle school and high school students and to analysis results of test using the instrument. Based on the results of literature review, mathematical belief is the cumulative effects of self-assessment and self-concept in mathematical learning and achievement experience. Four sub-components of mathematical belief is identified belief of school mathematics, belief of mathematical problem solving, mathematical self-concept, belief of mathematical teaching and learning. The instrument was developed to investigate mathematical belief by reflecting Korean middle school and high school students' psychological characters. To develop the appropriate items for the mathematical belief, after reviewing literature thoroughly, first version of the instrument was developed and exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were conducted. Then, to reduce the effect of the gender difference and achievement level difference, Correlation Analysis and 1-way ANOVA was performed. Also, using multiple group confirmatory factor analysis, this instrument was investigated to see whether this can be used for both middle school and high school. The final items for middle school students is consisted 7 items of belief of school mathematics, 9 items of belief of mathematical problem solving, 11 items of mathematical self-concept, 10 items of belief of mathematical teaching and learning. Instrument of mathematical belief for high school students is consisted 9 items of belief of school mathematics, 9 items of belief of mathematical problem solving, 11 items of mathematical self-concept, 11 items of belief of mathematical teaching and learning. This study examined the differences about mathematical belief's sub-factors shown by three groups of mathematics achievement level. Students of higher achievement level showed that the degree of most factors ware the highest excepting stereotype of belief of school mathematics. Also, Male students preferred more positive in mathematics belief than female students.

This study examined the effect of simulated instruction activities based on a constructivist teaching approach on epistemological belief, science teaching efficacy belief, and teaching motivation. The RTOP (Reformed Teaching Observation Protocol) played a role to guide preservice biology teachers to obtain insights on current reformed teaching and to further practice teaching based on constructivism. The results indicated that preservice teachers changed their epistemological beliefs toward more sophisticated views, especially for 'simple knowledge'. They also improved their science teaching efficacy beliefs, both personal science teaching efficacy belief (PSTEB) and science teaching outcome expectancy (STOE). In addition, these perservice teachers decreased their scores of extrinsic teaching motivation. The Pearson correlation represented the negative relationship between personal science teaching efficacy belief (PSTEB) and extrinsic teaching motivation. After intervention, the preservice teachers mentioned inquiry, active participation and discussion as ideal science teaching methods and qualifications for science teachers.

Teachers' teaching behavior is directly influenced by teachers' belief, and students' belief system is directly influenced by teachers' teaching behavior. There has been a question whether curriculum of teacher training university could help preservice teachers form positive belief system. The purpose of this study was to address this issue empirically. First, a questionnaire about mathematical belief was given to freshmen preservice teachers. They generally showed positive belief about mathematics to the degree that is not satisfactory and responded most positively in the sub-area of teaching mathematics from three sub-areas of mathematics itself, studying mathematics, and teaching mathematics. After studying a mathematical philosophy course, the freshmen preservice teachers were given the same questionnaire that they responded before studying the course. Belief about mathematics itself was changed very positively, and increase in the sub-area of mathematics itself was the largest. These results show that the mathematical philosophy course helped preservice teachers form positive belief system in mathematics.

The purpose of this study is to develop the clothing safety teaching/learning plan in Home Economics based on the health belief model and to examine the effects of the course using the developed teaching/learning plan on the health belief. Based on ADDIE model, 6 clothing safety teaching/learning plans were developed by applying the health belief model. They consisted of three learning factors of 'harmful substances that can be exposed during the production, wear, wash, and storage of clothes and textile products', 'environment friendly fibers' and 'natural detergents'. Then they were implemented on 7 classes in middle school located in Gyeonggi-do Province from August 20 to September 7 in 2018. The health beliefs data collected before and after the course were analyzed with paired t-test with SPSS/win. As a result, the perceived threat(combination of perceived severity and perceived susceptibility), the perceived benefit, and the self-efficacy were significantly improved. And the perceived barrier was significantly reduced. In conclusion, the home economics clothing safety education course using the health belief model was meaningful as the safety education to enable middle school students to practice safe clothing life from harmful substances. The results of this study are expected to be helpful for activating safety education in home economics.

In this study, we examine whether the description of the elementary science curriculum guide, the concept of evolution, and the beliefs of teachers affect the teaching practice in classes related to adaptation of elementary school teachers. First, we examined the alternative concept among the sentences described in the bio-adaptation-related unit of the 2009 Elementary Science Curriculum Teacher's Guide and identified the effects of this description on the teaching practice of elementary school teachers. Next, six elementary school teachers were classified according to the results of the evolutionary concept test paper and the evolutionary belief test paper, and based on the class recording data and interview data, whether there is a difference in teaching execution. As a result, it was confirmed that there were a total of 18 descriptions corresponding to the concept of evolutionary alternatives in the analysis of instruction descriptions, and that these descriptions influenced elementary school teachers' adaptation concepts and teaching practice. Next, the group with high and low levels of evolution differ in the areas of "recognition of importance in the unit, distinction between adaptation concepts in the general sense and adaptation concepts in the biological sense, errors in the class," and "recognition of evolutionary education needs in the elementary curriculum." This study is meaningful in that it qualitatively confirms the research on the evolution concept of elementary school teachers, which has been approached quantitatively, and in-depth, confirms how the description, evolution concepts, and evolutionary beliefs affect elementary school teachers' biological adaptation concepts.
This study examined Korean pre-service science teachers' belief on science teaching and learning and its evolution over years in their teacher preparation programs. Juniors and seniors from two major universities, enrolled in college of education located in major cities in Korea, participated in this study. They completed BARSTL(Belief About Refrmed Science Teaching and Learning) which consisted of 32 Likert scale items. In order to investigate the evolution of their belief on science teaching and learning, the juniors responded to BARSTL again after 1 year. Results indicated that the pre-service science teachers had to some extent positive beliefs on science teaching and learning, but their beliefs were not much developed over a year.
This study was to investigate the practice of the teachers who changed their teaching subject to Mathematics from other subjects. Teacher, A who had traditional belief and Teacher, B, non-traditional belief were chosen for the study through the questionnaire in Sep. 2014. The result indicated that Teacher, A in traditional belief showed teacher-centered teaching but Teacher, B in nontraditional belief showed inconsistent way of teaching in comparison to the original perspective. The later said she could not teach students as she wanted to teach because of the lack of knowledge of teaching as a math teacher. The difficulties Teacher, A encountered were: to handle too many works beyond teaching and to teach too many contents to cover without having enough time to prepare. Teacher, B didn't know how to teach students math in a constructivism way. They asked to offer them more in-service training program to develop their expertise for teaching mathematics.
This paper is to investigate how two elementary school teacher's belief mathematics as educational content, and teaching and learning mathematics as a part of educational methodology, and what the two teachers believe towards gifted children and their education, and what the classes demonstrate and its effects on the sociomathematical norms. To investigate this matter, the study has been conducted with two teachers who have long years of experience in teaching gifted children, but fall into different belief categories. The results of the study show that teacher A falls into the following category: the essentiality of mathematics as 'traditional', teaching mathematics as 'blended', and learning mathematics as 'traditional'. In addition, teacher A views mathematically gifted children as autonomous researchers with low achievement and believes that the teacher is a learning assistant. On the other hand, teacher B falls into the following category: the essentiality of mathematics as 'non-traditional', teaching mathematics as 'non-traditional, and learning mathematics as 'non-traditional.' Also, teacher B views mathematically gifted children as autonomous researchers with high achievement and believes that the teacher is a learning guide. In the teacher A's class for gifted elementary school students, problem solving rule and the answers were considered as important factors and sociomathematical norms that valued difficult arithmetic operation were demonstrated However, in the teacher B's class for gifted elementary school students, sociomathematical norms that valued the process of problem solving, mathematical explanations and justification more than the answers were demonstrated. Based on the results, the implications regarding the education of mathematically gifted students were investigated.
