  • An objective of this paper is to discuss the didactical contracts which have been conceptualized by Brousseau. He modelled mathematics instruction as a game. In such game, didactical contracts existed as its own hidden rules which teacher and student should obey Brousseau introduced it to reveal certain hidden rules which regulates mathematics instruction. Those rules are implicit and reciprocal. In particular, it is not revealed until students break. He defined didactical contracts as teacher's behaviour and corresponding students 'behaviour in order to define it operationally. He he did not define it in psychological and epistemological dimension. But it is necessary to discuss teacher's belief system and epistemology, since teacher's behaviour in instruction is affected by them. He also did not discuss fully teacher's breaking of didactical contracts.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between teacher's efficacy and job stress and the effects of educare center teacher's teaching efficacy on job stress. The subjects of this study were 200 teachers at the public, private, or home child-care centers in Pyeongtaek, Songtan and Osan. To analyze the general characteristics of subjects, frequency analysis and descriptives, ANOVA and correlation analysis, and multiple regression were used. The results of this study were as follows: First, educare center teacher's teaching efficacy level was a little higher than the average. The mean score of general belief of teaching efficacy was a little higher than the personal belief of teaching efficacy. Second, educare center teacher's job stress level show to be lower than average. Job related stress is the highest. Next is, the child related stress, personal related stress. Third, teaching efficacy significantly influenced on the job stress. The result indicated the higher educare center teacher's belief of efficacy was, the lower the job stress was. While general teaching efficacy was not associated with teaching efficacy, personal teaching efficacy was significantly related to teaching efficacy. The result of analyzing the effects of educare center teacher's teaching efficacy on job stress showed personal teaching efficacy had a strong influence on job stress. In detail, there was a significant negative correlation between personal teaching efficacy and job stress. Among the general factors such as the level of education, monthly income, work hours had significant influence on job stress. Therefore, the higher the level of education, the less monthly income, the longer work hours, it appeared that educare center teacher's job stress is higher.

  • This study aims to investigate the main effects and interaction effects of individual variables on the epistemological beliefs of elementary school science teachers. For this purpose, a survey was conducted on 338 elementary science teachers in the metropolitan area on gender, teaching career, and epistemological beliefs. Epistemological beliefs show significant differences not only in gender and teaching career, but also in the interaction between gender and teaching career. Depending on gender, female teachers are more integrated in knowledge than male teachers, and process is more important than outcome in learning. Depending on the teaching career, it was found that high-career teachers generally value the process rather than the results, as knowledge is integrated and constantly evolving, knowledge is acquired by individual reasoning and justified through external interaction. On the other hand, teachers with low career perceive that efforts are indispensable in learning compared to other groups. Depending on the interaction between gender and teaching career, elementary school teachers believe that the higher the teaching career, the more integrated and constantly evolved, but low-career male teachers believed that learning ability was born with experience, while high-career male teachers value the learning process. Based on this study, it is expected that many training sessions aimed at improving the quality of teaching and learning will provide more effective opportunities to develop elementary science teachers' epistemological beliefs, considering teachers' personal characteristics.

  • Robotics has been increasing its role among factors affecting teachers' technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge(TPACK) in education. This paper reviews these factors and analyses each to identify those most influential: teachers' individual (gender, teaching experiences), professional development(PD) for technology integration, psycho-philosophical characteristics (attitude toward technology integration, constructive belief), and school characteristics. Those having the most significant influence on teachers' TPACK of robotics were PD for technology integration from individual characteristics, attitudes toward technology integration, educational belief from psycho-philosophical characteristics, and schools' atmosphere and support from school characteristics.Thisreview confirmed that PD for technology integration and school atmosphere are the two most influential factors among all factors considered. Practical implications on precautions for effective integration of robotics in education were identified.

  • This study examined the changes of preservice biology teachers' NOS pedagogical content knowledge through two consecutive science methods courses: NOS understandings; attitudes toward teaching science; difficulties of NOS teaching; NOS teaching strategies; and views of orientation of NOS teaching. During the science methods course I, the preservice teachers engaged in discussions and reflections on what science is and how scientific knowledge has produced, drawing NOS aspects from episodes of history of science, and planning the lessons cooperating NOS instructional objectives. Then the next semester, through the science methods course II, the preservice teachers had a chance of the simulated teaching by adopting NOS teaching and learning activities in the context of the secondary biology context. The preservice teachers, further, reflected on their NOS teaching. The results showed that the preservice teachers constructed the NOS pedagogical content knowledge. They significantly improved their views of NOS and its teaching(p<.05) after the science methods course I, and retained their understanding after the science methods course II(p>.05). The preservice teachers mentioned the difficulties of teaching NOS in the secondary biology context, and further suggested effective NOS teaching methods in their reflective journals.

  • There are two purposes of this study; 1) to identify the perception about Web accessibility of students with disabilities and their Web-based Instructional personnel (WBI personnel) in higher education, and 2) to find out effective WBI design strategies actually used by WBI personnel to design and develop accessible Web-Based instruction for students with disabilites. Sixteen students with disabilites and their WBI personnel at a mid-western university in US were recruited for individual interviews. The results showed that WBI personnel did not know about Web accessibility and were not well prepared to make their WBI accessible. They have to provide the equality and quality of life to students with disabilites by making their instruction accessible. They felt that they could not guarantee whether their WBI was accessible even after meeting current standards and guidelines. WBI personnel also suggested that they had to provide students with disabilites with various methods and use appropriate instructional design strategies in order to address their needs. Finally, some effective instructional design used by WBI personnel in order to make WBI accessible were listed.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the teaching professionalism of the two teachers for secondary science-gifted students in perspective of teaching orientations. Both teachers have been taught biology to secondary science-gifted students for more than six years and they have received in-service training in gifted education. Teachers' orientations were investigated through in-depth interviews and observing lessons. For the data collection, videotapes were recorded during two lessons and two in-depth interviews for each participant were conducted. All recorded data were carefully transcribed and analyzed. Some unique characteristics of teaching were identified from the class instruction of each participant. Both teachers revealed 'Open Inquiry' orientation. This was reflected by their educational goals and beliefs that they should help science-gifted students to grow themselves as scientists by enhancing their inquisitiveness and creative problem solving ability. However, each teacher had shown different teaching orientations such as 'Academic Rigor' and 'Discovery' that seemed to have influence on the level or the range of subject matter covered in the classes. Teachers' science teaching orientations have been changed by their subject of teaching and their experiences in teaching the gifted. In the process, teachers' educational philosophy about gifted education plays an important role in teaching orientation. Based on the ongoing teachers' efforts for enhancing his/her professionalism, the teachers seemed to critically review theoretical knowledge of the science teachers in gifted education through self-reflection on their own teaching methods. When teacher's educational philosophy about gifted education was established and internalized, science teaching orientations in teaching practice seemed to be consistent with his/her goal of teaching.

  • This article explores early childhood teachers' practices from bottom-up perspectives on the relationship between theory and practice. Results of the review of literature are as follows: 1) From top-down perspectives early childhood teachers' practices and their classroom behaviors have been traditionally defined within the framework of theories of child development, the notion of developmentally appropriate practice, and designed program models; 2) From bottom-up perspectives researchers have a focus on how teachers' practices lead theories and how they construct the act of teaching through reflective thinking; 3) empirical research on preservice and inservice teachers demonstrates that preservice teachers develop their own theories of teaching from their previously held assumptions, gained knowledge from preparation programs, and their individual experiences. It also shows that inservice teachers construct teaching through their implicit knowledge and the use of strategies to negotiate problems. Implications for future studies on teachers's practices are discussed.
