  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the gifted students' view on argumentation and the aspects of the argumentation in problem-solving type experiment. As a result, very lively argumentation was identified but quality enhancement on argumentation wasn't found over time. Students made frequent use of dialogic argumentation component, and especially, request & response component was highly used. Though usage frequency is low, the component of ground & question on ground was shown in 3rd class, and simple agreement gradually reduced, and reinforcing elaboration & metacognitive question has slightly increased. Also, students' argumentation were closely related to teachers' teaching approaches as some teacher-led steps doesn't appear in students' argumentation. By comparison in steps, 'problem solving activity & result analysis' step included 2 times more argument components than the previous step. We also found that method grouping teams does not almost affect the argumentation of gifted students. By survey results, most students recognized that they experienced free argumentation and this program activate argumentation and 'strange things' or 'difficulty' of program topics are obstacles in vitalization of argumentation. 'Surface growth experiments' was the most lively argumentation topic. The argumentation was lively made in the step of 'finding solution. 'Teachers' scaffolding accelerate the argumentation and help resolve difficulties in argumentation. Thus, students have positive recognition for the argumentation process in the experiments and recognize that argumentation process is needed.

  • Recent educational policy by coalition government in UK is called knowledge turn. A core competency-based curriculum based on the relative knowledge of the social constructivism and postmodernism has been strongly endorsed by the previous new labor government. The view of knowledge regards knowledge as constructed socially, and emphasizes personal everyday knowledge. But the knowledge-based curriculum based on absolutism is strongly endorsed by the current coalition government. It emphasizes objectivity of knowledge. Social realism criticizes both absolutism and relativism on knowledge. Social realism places disciplinary knowledge above everyday knowledge, and considers disciplinary knowledge as powerful knowledge. But it doesn't mean that social realism neglects everyday knowledge. Rather, social realism empathizes relating disciplinary knowledge to everyday knowledge. Recent Living Geography and YPG(Young People's Geographies) project by the Geographical Association is based on the social realism. The aims of the project is to connect academic geography related to young people's geographies with student's everyday geographies, and academic geographers as mentors, tutors and students together are to make school geography curriculum through conversation.

  • This study investigates the effects of formative assessment utilizing mobile applications on interest and self-directedness in science instruction. The study subjects are two 6th grade classes from H elementary school located in Incheon, and the experimental group and the comparative group are composed of 21 students, respectively. The students from the experimental group have been taught with mobile devices while the comparative group has been taught in methods consistent with the current teaching standards. For the sake of research, the results of the method applied to the mobile device focus group have been edited using Google Drive Forms, entered as QR codes and stored in order for them to later be utilized for teaching and learning process. In the process, the teacher has provided the students with feedback based on their answers. The students of comparative group are to solve the same formative assessment in paper. As a result, the teacher of the mobile device focus group has been able to go through twenty-nine questions on formative assessment in the teaching and learning process, confirm the correct answers five times and provide feedback twenty-five times for additional explanation. In the inquiry about interest, the mobile device group scored 4.64 points and the standard one scored just 1.99 points (p<0.01). Fifteen students answered in the interview that and the major reason why they scored high has been because it was fun to study with mobile devices. When it comes to self-directedness over the process of teaching and learning, the mobile device focus group has answered positively but the standard group has scored relatively low (p<0.01).

  • We have developed a UMC (Use-Modify-Create) strategy for the improvement of computational thinking in SW education. UMC model is an instructional strategy that students analyze examples of algorithms, modify-expand it and to develop new SW. First, we applied the UMC classes during 1 semester targeting pre-service teachers. To explore the effectiveness of the proposed model, we conducted a t-test for improving students' self-CT. Through a result, we found that is the UMC teaching-learning strategy helped the CT concepts and practice skills. In addition, we could see the Use and Create steps help to improve the ability of students' CT than directly teaching and Modify steps.

  • Conventional one-way cramming education at schools has the disadvantage of poor student interest in learning, immersion, and learning efficiency as well as a limitation in realizing collective intelligence and collaborative learning. Therefore, an educational content service platform using a near-field communication(NFC) technology is required as a tool for encouraging the voluntary learning participation of students and increasing learning effectiveness through self-directed studying. This study focuses on the development of an educational content production system that creates high-quality education contents suitable for smart schools. In these schools, students and teachers generally communicate through an electronic blackboard using Bluetooth, which is an NFC technology. Further, the lecture notes of individual students are reproduced and collected as big data, which will facilitate the sharing of these notes.

  • The value that students consider important in math learning may vary depending on the student's socio-cultural background and personal experience. Although socio-cultural backgrounds are very diverse, I considered overseas vs domestic Koreans, and secondary school levels as variables in terms of students' educational experiences. Overseas students had a lower perception of the value in mathematics than domestic students, especially about understanding mathematics knowledge and the value of the latest teaching and learning methods. Middle school students perceived the value of mathematics as an activity higher than that of high school students, and high school students perceived student agency as a higher value than middle school students. In addition, I considered meta-affect as one of the individual students' experiences, finally meta-affect was a variable that could explain value perception in math learning, and in particular, affective awareness of achievement, affective evaluation of value, and affective using were significant. From the results, I suggested that research on ways to improve the value and the meta-affect in math learning, test to measure the value of students in math learning, the expansion of research subjects to investigate the value in math learning, and a teacher who teaches overseas Koreans are needed.

  • Problem-based learning (PBL) is an effective teaching-learning strategy for enhancing students' motivation, problem solving ability, and creativity. Its educational values coincide with the aim of open-inquiry activity introduced in 2007 revised national curriculum. From this aspect we designed the PBL open-inquiry program and implemented to 202 first year middle school students in Gyeonggi provincial office of education for one semester. We developed an energy related PBL problem. The program was designed in four steps: 'understand the problem,' 'investigate information,' 'solve the problem,' and 'present and evaluate the result.' Through the program, students did such activities as 'make Know/need to know chart,' 'group discussion,' 'search information,' and 'preparation of group report.' After completing the program, a survey was conducted to understand the students' perception of the program. The results are as follows: First, 40.6% of students showed positive attitude toward the program. Especially, students responded that 'make Know/need to know chart' was very useful. However, some students responded that 'search information' and 'preparation of group report' were difficult to perform. Second, male students showed positive attitude toward the PBL program compared to female students. Also students had higher scores in attitude toward science, showed more positive attitude toward the PBL program. Third, there was a significant correlation between attitude toward science and perception of PBL steps. Based on survey results, some suggestions were made for teachers who were planning to implement PBL in open-inquiry program.
