  • The purposes of this study are to investigate the change in the teacher efficacy beliefs of elementary pre-service teachers in mathematics during the student teaching, and to suggest the direction of the student teaching program for improving the pre-service teachers' efficacy beliefs in mathematics. For this, 93 elementary pre-service teachers participated. After the 4 weeks of practice, any changes in their teacher efficacy beliefs in mathematics were analyzed and the positive and negative causes of the differences were discussed. Consequently, their teacher efficacy beliefs in mathematics meaningfully decreased. The analysis of the cause of the decrease indicated that the teacher efficacy beliefs in teaching mathematics, rather than in the management of their mathematics class, meaningfully decreased. The meetings with the subjects also revealed that they had more negative experience with class teaching and were not able to gain much positive experience with it after all.

  • Reflecting on own beliefs about teaching and learning, developed during "the apprenticeship of observation", is a central task for pre-service years. This case study analysed a lesson observation course which could identify, challenge pre-service teachers' folk pedagogy about classroom communications and induce to change of beliefs about teaching and learning. Our analysis shows that targeting and refuting pre-service teachers' specific belief may be an effective strategy for teacher educators to foster new teaching practice.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relations among mathematics teachers' beliefs, classroom norms and discourse, and equity issues in mathematics classrooms. In order to achieve this purpose, three teachers who work in the same school were analyzed. The analysis revealed that the participating teachers' beliefs about mathematics teaching and learning and about their students' abilities and motivation influenced the establishment of classroom norms and discourses that defined what students needed to do to be successful mathematics learners. Also, classroom norms and discourse affected the development of students' identity and power and the level of equity in the classroom.

  • This paper is to investigate how two elementary school teacher's belief mathematics as educational content, and teaching and learning mathematics as a part of educational methodology, and what the two teachers believe towards gifted children and their education, and what the classes demonstrate and its effects on the sociomathematical norms. To investigate this matter, the study has been conducted with two teachers who have long years of experience in teaching gifted children, but fall into different belief categories. The results of the study show that teacher A falls into the following category: the essentiality of mathematics as 'traditional', teaching mathematics as 'blended', and learning mathematics as 'traditional'. In addition, teacher A views mathematically gifted children as autonomous researchers with low achievement and believes that the teacher is a learning assistant. On the other hand, teacher B falls into the following category: the essentiality of mathematics as 'non-traditional', teaching mathematics as 'non-traditional, and learning mathematics as 'non-traditional.' Also, teacher B views mathematically gifted children as autonomous researchers with high achievement and believes that the teacher is a learning guide. In the teacher A's class for gifted elementary school students, problem solving rule and the answers were considered as important factors and sociomathematical norms that valued difficult arithmetic operation were demonstrated However, in the teacher B's class for gifted elementary school students, sociomathematical norms that valued the process of problem solving, mathematical explanations and justification more than the answers were demonstrated. Based on the results, the implications regarding the education of mathematically gifted students were investigated.

  • For teachers to develop new beliefs regarding science teaching and learning, they must undergo a process similar to what they are trying to provide their students. Seventy-one Korean secondary school teachers including 20 earth science teachers have participated in such process. In the four-week long summer workshop hosted by University of Iowa, science teachers were exposed to several activities and lectures wherein they experienced student-centered lessons by playing the roles of both teachers and learners. This study examined the influence of such experience on the teachers’ beliefs about science teaching and learning. Changes in teachers’ beliefs were found in seven question items on the subjects of goals of science learning, the roles of science teachers and students, and classroom practices after workshop participation; it was found that teachers’ beliefs of science learning and teaching shifted from teacher-centered to student-centered. Although this shift does not denote a complete shift from one extreme to the other, it is meaningful to note that teachers’ beliefs after attending the workshop were interpreted to be either anti- or contrary to teacher-centered. One of the possible factors for making such positive changes may have been teamwork or the teachers’ cooperative learning experience.

  • This study examined Korean pre-service science teachers' belief on science teaching and learning and its evolution over years in their teacher preparation programs. Juniors and seniors from two major universities, enrolled in college of education located in major cities in Korea, participated in this study. They completed BARSTL(Belief About Refrmed Science Teaching and Learning) which consisted of 32 Likert scale items. In order to investigate the evolution of their belief on science teaching and learning, the juniors responded to BARSTL again after 1 year. Results indicated that the pre-service science teachers had to some extent positive beliefs on science teaching and learning, but their beliefs were not much developed over a year.

  • We investigated whether divergent thinking attitudes mediate the relationship between self-esteem and creative teaching beliefs among teachers. We examined differences in the mediating model we proposed in the groups of pre-service and in-service child care teachers. We found differences in the pre-service and in-service child care teachers in the proposed mediating model. Especially in the pre-service child care teachers, the mediating effect of divergent thinking attitudes was confirmed. There was a significant effect from self esteem to creative teaching beliefs and also a significant effect from divergent thinking attitudes to creative teaching beliefs. But in-service child care teachers, there was neither direct nor indirect effect of self-esteem to creative teaching beliefs. Suggestions for more studies and for better in-service education for the pre-service and in-service child care teachers are recommended for the future.

  • This study is a complex type consisting of survey study and self-study. The former investigated elementary teachers' epistemological beliefs on convergence knowledge and teaching. As a representative of the result of survey study I, as a teacher as well as a researcher, was the participant of the self-study, which investigated my epistemological belief on convergence knowledge and teaching and my execution of convergent science teaching based on family resemblance of mathematics, science, and physical education. A set of open-ended written questionnaires was administered to 28 elementary teachers. Participating teachers considered convergent teaching as discipline-using or multi-disciplinary teaching. They also have epistemological beliefs in which they conceived convergence knowledge as aggregation of diverse disciplinary knowledge and students could get it through their own problem solving processes. As a teacher and researcher I have similar epistemological belief as the other teachers. During the self-study, I tried to apply convergence knowledge system based on the family resemblance analysis among math, science, and PE to my teaching. Inter-disciplinary approach to convergence teaching was not easy for me to conduct. Mathematical units, ratio and rate were linked to science concept of velocity so that it was effective to converge two disciplines. Moreover PE offered specific context where the concepts of math and science were connected convergently so that PE facilitated inter-disciplinary convergent teaching. The gaps between my epistemological belief and inter-disciplinary convergence knowledge based on family resemblance and the cases of how to bridge the gap by my experience were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to systematically analyze the results of the existing research on mathematical beliefs, compare and synthesize the valuable results and to suggest implications for mathematical beliefs and research. As a result of checking the methodological quality of 59 articles in total using the MQA(Methodological Quality Assessment) checklist, most of them surveyed mathematical beliefs using questionnaires, and most of the studies were conducted on prospective teachers. As a result of systematic review, the conceptual characteristics of mathematical beliefs, object-specific characteristics, and the educational influence of mathematical beliefs were able to synthesize the meaning. Mathematical beliefs had important educational influences in the practice of teachers, students, and math classes. As the results of the study, we emphasize the importance of changing the beliefs of students and teachers in order to solve the problem of mathematical education, where students rely on private education rather than activity thinking, and teachers do not pay attention to students thinking. It has been shown that concrete support is needed for practicing participatory instruction focused on mathematical thinking.
