  • In this study, the damage to the bridge structure such as the crack and water leakage was assessed due to the increase of the vehicle load and traffic on the roads. In order to make this into the database, as a part of the automation system development for the bridge maintenance, the students themselves designed and developed their own inspection robotic system based on the idea of robots currently being developed overseas. Its field testing was conducted and its applicability assessed. During the design and fabrication, its connection to the details of the unit course taken in the undergraduate level was focused. In terms of new product development, the field application was possible due to the support of the academic-industrial cooperation firms. Furthermore, through the survey of the students, the improvements in the practical skills of the students who participated in this development process was affirmed.

  • It is customary that tendons and sectional dimensions are calibrated and tendon forces are applied at once at the initial stage to keep the subsequent stresses occuring at different loading stages within the allowable stresse in prestressed concrete (PSC) bridge design. However, this traditional tensioning method usually results in a too conservative sectional depth in view of ultimate capacity of a girder. A new design method which can realize the reduction of sectional depth of PSC girder is theoretically suggested in this study. Tendons are tensioned twice at different loading stages: the initial stage and the stage after fresh slab concrete is cast. It can be shown that according to this technique, sectional depth can be significantly reduced and larger span can be realized compared to traditional ones. In this paper, there is an example about the design of bridge by means of new PSC design theory, having a longer span than a existing railway bridge. Also, a new method by continuous tendon profiles is presented to be continuous a IPC bridge.

  • Two methods of the nonlinear static pushover analysis have been presented for the performance-based seismic design and evaluation of MDOF continuous bridges. Guidelines for buildings presented in FEMA-273 applying the Displacement Coefficient Method (DCM) and in ATC applying the Capacity Spectrum Method(CSM) have been modified for MDOF bridges. Two methods are compared with the time- history analysis. The lateral load distribution pattern for seismic loads has been examined in the static pushover analysis. The force-based fiber frame finite element has been implemented in the modeling of reinforced concrete piers.

  • For the last 60years, North Korea has constructed a lot of roadway bridges with different standard from that used in South Korea, and since North Korea prefer to take advantage of train more than truck for long distance transport, the construction and maintenance of roadway bridges have not been constructed effectively. Upon these situations, an exact evaluation of the resisting capacity for bridges in North Korea has been required to check of any bridge can be used in time of war. This paper introduces an evaluation of bridges in North Korea on the basis of Military Load Classification (MLC). Three different types of concrete bridges are considered, and the numerical analysis and design calculation give the military loadings which can pass through the bridges in North Korea.

  • In this research, the comparison and analysis of domestic prestressed concrete bridges were performed with major variations of superstructure type, and span lengths using the 'current status of roadbridge and tunnel' informations provided by MLTM and STATISTICS KOREA. As a result of analysis, steel box girder bridges with 50~100m span length represent about 76% of bridges, but prestressed concrete bridges represent a relatively smaller percentage. In order to replace steel box girder bridges with prestressed concrete bridges, it is necessary to develop prestressed concrete bridges with high-strength tendons and concrete.

  • A dynamic analysis is carried out to provide an evaluation method of running safety for a PSC box bridge located on the Gyung-Bu high speed railway. The numerical models of bridge and train vehicle are developed in detail with corresponding interaction system. Three dimensional skeleton element model of PSC box bridge and 38-degree-of-freedom of vehicle are adopted from the existing properties of KTX bridge and train vehicle. Analysed three direction rotations of vehicle on the bridge and ground tracks are compared for running speeds up to 500 km/h with 10 km/h constant increments. The comparison of the rotations will be an improved evaluation method of Running Safety in stead of the existing standard method.

  • The proposed real-time structural health monitoring(SHM) system in past transferred and received data, central server gathered data from sensors, through coaxial cable. an immense sum of money is required to structure sensor network using coaxial cable. This paper proposes USN-based structural health monitoring(SHM). AIso, this paper designs and realizes prototypes according to proposed SHM. The value of sensing data obtained through HSDPA transfer to the BMS(Bridge Monitoring Server) passing through the TCP / IP socket by building two-way communication system, We have implemented a complete graph converting full system.

  • Steel box girder bridges are being commonly designed for medium-span bridges of span length. Composite truss bridges with steel diagonals instead of concrete webs can be an excellent design alternative, because it can reduce the dead weight of superstructures. One of the key issues in the design of composite truss bridges is the joint structureconnecting the diagonal steel members with the upper and lower concrete slabs. Because the connection has to carry concentrated combined loads and the design provisions for the joint are not clear, it is necessary to investigate the load transfer mechanism and the design methods for each limit state. There are various connection details according to the types of diagonal members. In this paper, the joint structure with group stud connectors welded on a gusset plate is used. Push-out tests for the group stud connectors of were performed. The test results showed that the current design codes on the ultimate strength ofthe stud connection can be used when the required minimum spacing of stud connectors is satisfied. Flexure-shear tests were conducted to verify the applicability of the design provisions for combined load effects to the strength of joint structures. To increase the pullout strength of the connection, bent studs were proposed and utilized for the edge studs in the group arrangement of the joint. The results showed that the details of the joint structure were enhanced. Thereafter, design guidelines were proposed.

  • This paper presents a new class of the vehicular live load factor for a reliability-based bridge design code. The significance of the current vehicular live load factor of 1.8 is investigated based on the return period of the vehicular live load and the design life of a bridge. It is shown that the current vehicular live load factor corresponds to a return period of 6.7 million years for a 100-year design life, which seems to be unrealistic in an engineering sense, and that the target reliability of 3.72 is set to too high without any reasoning for the gravitational load-governed limit state compared with that of the other limit states. In case the same return period as the design wind velocity or the ground acceleration is employed for the vehicular live load, the corresponding vehicular live load factor becomes around 1.15, and the target reliability index for the return period may be selected as 2.0 or 2.5 depending on the governing load effect. The complete sets of the load-resistance factors for the proposed target reliability indices are evaluated through optimization.

  • The prediction of the dynamic response of a bridge resulting from passing vehicles across the span is a significant problem in bridge design. In this paper. the static and dynamic experiments are performed to understand the dynamic behavior of an actual two-span steel plate girder bridge. The road surface roughness of the roadway and bridge deck is directly measured by Intelligent Total Station. Numerical scheme to obtain the dynamic responses of the bridges in consideration of measuring road surface roughness and 3-D vehicle model is also presented. The bridge and vehicle are modeled as 3-D bridge and vehicle model, respectively. The main girder and concrete deck are modeled as beam and shell elements, respectively and rigid link is used for the structure between main girder and concrete deck. Bridge-vehicle interaction equations are derived and the impact factors of the responses for different vehicle speeds are calculated and compared with those predicted by several foreign specifications.
