  • The safety of expressway bridges was estimated by checking the external condition rank based on the nondestructive inspection and material test and by measuring load carrying capacity based on the result of load test. Although the load carrying capacity of the bridges was clearly low compared to the design standard, it was examined that many of the bridges have good external condition rank relatively. Also, it can be assured that load carrying capacity shows a considerable difference according to various condition even though the bridges have similar construction year and a structural type. Therefore, this study showed various problems of the current safety measurement of expressway bridges by considering the status of the expressway bridges, external condition rank, and method of safety diagnosis and repair, rehabilitation for maintenance. Based on the existing data of over 400 expressway bridges, the load carrying capacity was analyzed quantitatively considering bridge type, serviced life, design live load, external condition rank and traffic count as variables. The result of this study will be expected to provide the basic information for a reasonable safety assessment of expressway bridge.

  • This study was conducted to propose a simple method to evaluate the load-carrying capacity of RC slab bridges, which have been most frequently constructed in Korea. A number of RC slab bridges have been considerably deteriorated associate with the long service year. However, since these bridges are not included in the 1st and 2nd class infrastructures due to their short span length, they have been relatively neglected compared to other bridge types in terms of safety management. In the previous theoretical study, a process (draft) was proposed for evaluating the damage of RC slab bridges using the relationship between the displacement response ratio and the stiffness reduction rate derived by the measured displacement and natural frequency. In this paper, to verify the validity of the proposed damage evaluation process (draft), the results to the actual bridges were compared with the safety grade and the Matsui's deterioration index. In addition, to enhance the practical applicability of the existing process (draft), an improved method approximately evaluating the load-carrying capacity using only the measured natural frequency was presented. If an error of 10% of the load-carrying capacity is allowed, it is judged that the proposed damage evaluation process can be appropriately used not only for evaluating the safety of RC slab bridges, but also for determining priorities for their maintenance.

  • This paper describes a detailed assessment of the structural safety, serviceability, capacity rating and long-term performance of a glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) slab bridge superstructure. This first all-GFRP slab bridge was installed in Korea on May 2002. The GFRP slab bridge is a simply supported, its length is 10.0 m, and is designed to carry two-lane traffic and has an overall width of 8.0m. The GFRP slab bridge is a sandwich structure with a corrugated core, fabricated by hand lay-up process with E-glass fibers and vinyl ester resins. The assessment of long-term performance for the GFRP slab bridge in 2004, 2011 includes a field load testing identical to that performed in 2002. The assessment indicates that the GFRP slab bridge has no structural problems and is structurally performing well in-service as expected. The assessment may provide a baseline data for the capacity ratings assessment of the GFRP slab bridge and also serve as part of a long-term performance of all-GFRP bridge superstructure.

  • The present study proposes the strengthening method to use Conclinic Advanced FiberWrep(CAF) so as to improve Load Carrying Capacity of the RC slab bridge. In order to evaluate the strengthening performance, we strengthen 50cm per unit-width of CAF to the slab's bottom of the test bridge that designed with DB 18, then perform Static and Dynamic Field Load Test. As a result of this, 14.7% of the maximum displacement, 5.0% of the strain and 33.7% of the impact factor are reduced after strengthening. At the middle of the test spans, nominal resisting ratio is increased by 27% and Service Load Carrying Capacity is increased by 44.6%, 48.9% of each span 1 and 2. In conclusion, this study indicates that the strengthening method using CAF is very effective to improve the deteriorated RC slab bridge designed with DB 18, to the DB 24 of the first class bridge design load.

  • This paper describes the design, manufacturing process, testing, application, and assessment of capacity-ratings of the first all advanced composites bridge on a public highway system. In order to verify the bridge design prior to the field application, a sub-scale bridge superstructure was built and tested in the laboratory. The field load test results were compared with those of the finite element analysis for the verification of validity. To investigate its in-service performance, field load testing and visual inspections were conducted under an actual service environment. The paper includes the presentation and discussion for advanced composites bridge capacity rating based on the stress modification coefficients obtained from the test results. The test result indicates that the advanced composites bridge has no structural problems and is structurally performing well in-service as expected. Since these composite materials are new to bridge applications, reliable data is not available for their in-service performance. The results may provide a baseline data for future field advanced composites bridge capacity rating assessments and also serve as part of a long-term performance of advanced composites bridge.

  • Small bridges carry out only general inspections based on visual inspection. The Bridges with more than 30 years of public use need to be decided on whether or not they will be reconstruction according to aging. However, there are some situations that need to be determined only by appearance condition, which is insufficient in terms of safety maintenance. In this paper, the condition evaluation and the load carrying capacity evaluation were carried out for aged small bridges. A comparison of the evaluation results was conducted to examine the appropriateness of the maintenance related to the decision making of the reconstruction. As a result of reviewing, two of the bridges showed that there are no abnormality in the safety of the state evaluation, but the load capacity were insufficient. Thus evaluation the safety and performing the reconstruction decision of aged small bridges by visual inspection alone with may cause problems. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out additional research on the ambient measurement and load carrying capacity evaluation for the maintenance of the bridges, and to supplement it through application of the bridge management system.

  • In tnis study, the impact factors of a simply supported highway bridge due to a vehicle moving across the span are presented. This variable has received cons~derable attention in recent years, both analytically and experimentally. The KBDC specification equation has a maximum 30 percent value which decreases with span length. The results of field tests showed that the dynamic load effects are mostly lower t.hari present KBDC value and that the impact factor does not vary significantly with spar1 as implied in KHUC. The rnain parameters affecting lmpact are the br dge approach. bumps, and other pavement roughness. In thls study, based on test results, three values of impact factors are provided by correlating the roughness of the surface to the deck condition survey values. The present study proposes reasonable impact factors for the strength evaluation of highway bridges. This study may be extended to the evaluation of existing brdges.
