In this paper, we proposed an optical true time-delay (TTD) for planar phased array antennas (PAAs), which is composed of a wavelength-dependent optical true time delay (WDOTTD) followed by a wavelength-independent optical true time delay (WIOTTD). The WDOTTD is a fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) Prism and the WDOTTD is a fiber delay-lines matrix of which each component consists of a certain length of fiber connected to cross-ports of a 2${\times}$2 MEMS switch. A 10-GHz 2-bit${\times}$4-bit two-dimensional optical TTD has been fabricated by cascading a WDOTTD with a maximum time delay of 810 ps to a WIOTTD of $\pm$50 ps. Time delay and insertion loss for each radiation angle have been measured. Time delay error for the WIOTTD has been measured to be less than $\pm$1 ps. We have also designed a two-dimensional 10-GHz PAA composed of 8${\times}$8 microstrip patch antenna elements driven by the proposed TTD. The radiation patterns of this PAA have been obtained by simulation and analyzed.
A Cr:YAG crystal was used as a saturable absorber for passive Q-switching of a Nd:$YVO_4$ laser which was pumped by a 1-W continuous wave laser diode. The first surface of the Cr:YAG was high-reflection coated for the pump wavelength. The high-reflection coating improved the absorption efficiency of the pump beam in the Nd:$YVO_4$ through double pass absorption. It also prevented pump beam induced partial bleaching of the Cr:YAG. The peak-to-peak pulse fluctuation of passively Q-switched laser output was approximately 4 %. The minimum pulse-width was measured to be 7.11 ns. Also, the average pulse repetition rate was 9 kHz and the maximum output power was 16.27 mW.
Since the use of porous silicon for microsensors and microactuators is in the euly stage of study, only several application devices, such as light-emitting diodes and chemical sensors have so far been demonstrated. In this paper we present an overview of the present status of porous silicon sensors and actuators research with special emphasis on the applications of chemical sensors and optical devices. The capacitive type porous silicon humidity sensors had a nonlinear capacitance-humidity characteristic and a good sensitivity at higher humidity above $40\%RH$. The porous silicon $n^+-p-n^+$ device showed a sharp increase in current when exposed to an ethanol vapor. The $p^+-PSi-n^+$ diode fabricated on porous silicon diaphragm exhibited an optical switching characteristic, opening up its utility as an optical sensor or switch. The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum, taken from porous silicon under 365 nm excitation, had a broad emission, peaked at -610 nm. The electroluminescence(EL) from ITO/PSi/In LED had a broader spectrum with a blue shifted peak at around 535nm than that of the PL.

Recently, visible light communication(VLC) is being actively researched as green wireless communication services are drawing attention. Currently, VLC mostly uses LED for transmission and PD(Photo Diode) for receiving. However, this kind of system has limited applications. Therefore, we design and propose in this paper, a LED-to-LED two way VLC system that doesn't use PD(Photo Diode). This system has the following features and contributions. First, this system uses just LED at both transmitter and receiver with analog switch, Second, this system support both one-way communication and two way communication together. One way communication can support multi-hop communication. The performance evaluation of the proposed system is conducted at a place with standard light. We test the success or failure of one way communication by changing distance and baud rate while test the success and failure of two way communication by changing distance. We expect that the proposed LED-to-LED system in this paper can be applied for various application fields.
The aim of this study was to measure the initial dynamic modulus changes of light cured composites using a custom made rheometer. The custom made rheometer consisted of 3 parts: (1) a measurement unit of parallel plates made of glass rods, (2) an oscillating shear strain generator with a DC motor and a crank mechanism, (3) a stress measurement device using an electromagnetic torque sensor. This instrument could measure a maximum torque of 2Ncm, and the switch of the light-curing unit was synchronized with the rheometer. Six commercial composite resins [Z-100 (Z1), Z-250 (Z2), Z-350 (Z3), DenFil (DF), Tetric Ceram (TC), and Clearfil AP-X (CF)] were investigated. A dynamic oscillating shear test was undertaken with the rheometer. A certain volume ($14.2\;mm^3$) of composite was loaded between the parallel plates, which were made of glass rods (3 mm in diameter). An oscillating shear strain with a frequency of 6 Hz and amplitude of 0.00579 rad was applied to the specimen and the resultant stress was measured. Data acquisition started simultaneously with light curing, and the changes in visco-elasticity of composites were recorded for 10 seconds. The measurements were repeated 5 times for each composite at $25{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$. Complex shear modulus G*, storage shear modulus G', loss shear modulus G" were calculated from the measured strain-stress curves. Time to reach the complex modulus G* of 10 MPa was determined. The G* and time to reach the G* of 10 MPa of composites were analyzed with One-way ANOVA and Tukey's test ($\alpha$ = 0.05). The results were as follows. 1. The custom made rheometer in this study reliably measured the initial visco-elastic modulus changes of composites during 10 seconds of light curing. 2. In all composites, the development of complex shear modulus G* had a latent period for $1{\sim}2$ seconds immediately after the start of light curing, and then increased rapidly during 10 seconds. 3. In all composites, the storage shear modulus G" increased steeper than the loss shear modulus G" during 10 seconds of light curing. 4. The complex shear modulus of Z1 was the highest, followed by CF, Z2, Z3, TC and DF the lowest. 5. Z1 was the fastest and DF was the slowest in the time to reach the complex shear modulus of 10 MPa.

We discuss the design, fabrication, and testing of a large-displacement electromagnetic actuator with the meander springs partially exposed to a magnetic field. We compared two prototypes: a prototype (F) of the conventional actuator with the meander springs fully exposed to a magnetic field and a prototype (P) of the proposed actuator with the meander springs partially exposed to a magnetic field. For a 5 Hz square input current varying from 10.40 mA, P showed an increase of $16.9{\pm}1.2%$ in the amplitude, which was greater than the increase in the case of F. Thus, we experimentally demonstrated the large-displacement actuation performance of the proposed actuator in a small volume and at low currents (below 40 mA). The proposed electromagnetic actuator can be used for low-power and large-displacement manipulation of optical switches and optical choppers.

The resonance properties due to the surface plasmon(SP) excitation of metal nanoparticles make the nanocomposite films promising for various applications such as optical switching devices. In spite of the well-known ultra-sensitive operation of optical switches based on a guided wave, the application of nanocomposite film(NC) has inherent limitation originating from the excessive optical loss related with the surface plasmon resonance(SPR). In this study, we addressed this problem and present the experimental and theoretical analysis on the pump-probe optical switching in prism-coupled Au(1 vol.%):$SiO_2$ nanocomposite waveguide film. The guided mode was successfully generated using a near infrared probe beam of 1550 nm and modulated with an external pump beam of 532 nm close to the SPR wavelength. We extend our approach to ultra-fast operation using a pulsed laser with 5 ns pulse width. To improve the switching speed through the reduction in thermal loading effect accompanied by the resonant absorption of pump beam light, we adopted a metallic film as a coupling layer instead of low-index dielectric layer between the high-index SF10 prism and NC slab waveguide. We observed great enhancement in switching speed for the case of using metallic coupling layer, and founded a distinct difference in origin of optical nonlinearities induced during switching operation using cw and ns laser.

We describe an all-optical circuit which recognizes the header information of packet-by-packet in the access networks based on FTTH. The circuit's operation is confirmed by an experiment in the recognition of 3 and 4 header bits. The output from the header recognition circuit appears in a signal assigned in the time axis according to the header information. The recognition circuit of header for self-routing has a very simple structure using only delay lines and switches. The circuit is expected that it can be constructed of the high reliability and the low cost. Also, the circuit can solve the problems of the power loss and private security which is the weak point of the TDM-PON method by being established a unique transmission line to each subscriber.
In this work, we have studied about an RSFQ (Rapid Single Flux Quantum) switch element. The circuit was designed, simulated, and laid out for mask fabrication. The switch cell was composed of a D flip-flop, a splitter, a confluence buffer, and a switch core. The switch core determined if the input data could pass to the output. “On” and o“off” controls in the switch core could be possible by utilizing an RS flip-flop. When a control pulse was input to the “on” port, the RS flip-flop was in the set state and passed the input pulses to the output port. When a pulse was input to the “off” port, the RS flip-flop was in the reset state and prevented the input pulses from transferring to the output port. We simulated and optimized the switch element circuit by using Xic, WRspice, and Julia. The minimum circuit margins in simulations were more than $\pm$20%. We also performed the mask layout of the circuit by using Xic and Lmeter.
