Modeling and fabrication of $1.31/1.55\mu\textrm{m}$ coarse WDM optical directional coupler using $Ag^+-Na^+$ ion-exchanged glass ($Ag^+-Na^+$이온교환법을 이용한 $1.31/1.55\mu\textrm{m}$ 두파장 방향성 광 결합기의 모델링 및 제작)

  • A $1.31/1.55\mu\textrm{m}$ coarse WDM opncal dIrectional coupler that conslsls of two idenlical straight channel waveguides in BK7 glass has been fabricated. The separatIOn between two channel waveguides is $8\mu\textrm{m}$ and the wavegu.ide width is $4\mu\textrm{m}$ . Especlally, we assumed that the index profile is Gaussian function and complementary error function in the width direction and depth direction, respectrvely. This directional coupler operating at $1.31/1.55\mu\textrm{m}$ with crosstalk of 18dB is demonstrated and has the 16 mm long length with 12.6 mm coupling region.region.

Crosstalks of Two-Waveguide and Three-Waveguide Directional Couplers (두도파로 및 세도파로 방향성 결합기의 Crosstalk)

  • The crosstalks of two-waveguide & three-waveguide directional couplers are analyzed. Advantages and disadvantages for each coupler are compared and discussed. Based on the relationship between the coupled mode and the normal mode, the mathematical expressions are derived in terms of the crosstalks for each directional coupler. Numerical techniques such as the finite-difference method and the beam propagation method are employed to testify the validity of the derived equations. The calculation results show that two-waveguide directional coupler is superior to any types of three-waveguide couplers from the practical viewpoint of the crosstalk and the coupling length.

  • 광섬유와 평면 도파로를 결합한 도파로 구조에서 광 결합 현상은 다양한 응용 가능성 때문에 이론적으로 또는 실험적으로 많은 연구가 되어오고 있다. 광섬유는 단일모드를 이용하고 적당한 곡률이 주어진 블록에 고정한 후 연마하여 클래딩의 일부를 제거하고, 그 상부에 다중모드 평면 도파로(Multi-Mode Overlay Waveguide; MMOW)를 구성한다. 제작된 결합기 구조에서 평면 도파로는 광섬유의 감쇠장 결합(Evanescent field coupling)을 유도하게 되므로, 소자의 특성은 평면 도파로의 구조와 조건에 의해 결정된다. Variable Optical Attenuator using Optical Coupling between a Side Polished Fiber and Refractive Index Matching Liquid (측면 연마된 광섬유와 굴절률 정합액사이의 광결합을 이용한 가변 광 감쇠기)

  • In this paper we proposed a variable optical attenuator using the side polished fiber coupled with a refractive index matching liquid. Small variation of refractive index of matching liquid can induce very large change of optical loss due to the coupling between the fiber mode and radiation mode. The thermo-optic effect of matching liquid was used to ontrol the optical attenuation. The side polished fiber block was fabricated using the silicon V gloove. Experimental results showed that $5^{\circ}C$ temperature variation was enough to adjust full range attenuation. The polarization dependent loss and insertion loss of the fabricated devices were 0.5dB and 0.2dB respectively.

  • 다중모드간섭을 이용한 소자는 집적광학에서 광신호의 분리와 결합에 있어서 널리 사용되고 있다. 이러한 소자는 편광상태와 파장에 덜 민감하며, 광 대역폭과 제작 허용오차가 크다는 장점을 가진다. 이러한 다중모드간섭기의 설계에 있어서 간섭기의 폭은 주로 출력단에서의 도파로 폭과 도파로간 간격으로부터 정해져왔다. 본 연구에서는 특별히 광신호의 효율적인 분배를 위해 간섭기의 폭과 관련하여 광 분배기의 손실 및 균일도를 최적화하기 위한 방안을 강구하였으며, 근사적인 이론식에 의한 결과와 비교하였다. (중략)

  • In this paper, we proposed a simple measurement method to find the behaviors of the fiber-to-waveguide coupler. The polished fiber blocks and planar waveguides on silicon dioxide were fabricated independently and then optically coupled by physical pressure. Several kinds of polymer with different refractive indices were used for waveguide films. The proposed method makes it possible to measure the center wavelength, bandwidth, extinction ratio, and polarization dependence of the coupler during fabrication procedure. The wavelength sensitivity increased with refractive index of polymer. The symmetric planar waveguide structure and isotropic property of guiding materials reduced polarization dependent property. Insertion loss of the coupler was less than 0.5dB. It is expected that our measurement method is useful for developing various optical devices using evanescent coupling between polished fiber and planar waveguide such as optical modulators and filters etc.

Low cost optical add/drop module for WDM optical communication networks (WDM 광통신망을 위한 저가형 광신호 삽입/추출 모듈 구현)

  • We propose a novel structure of wavelength selective optical add/drop filter comprising two tap couplers and a fiber Bragg grating. The device has unique features including a simpler structure and a lower cost implementation as compared with existing device for the same operation. The filter performance has been measured and analyzed, experimentally. The implemented prototype filter shows good performance with no­crosstalk power penalty in a 155Mbps per channel wavelength­division­multiplexing transmission system but suffers from a relatively high loss of 3.5㏈ and 21㏈ for transmitted and dropped channel, respectively. While the dropped channel extinction ratio was more than 15㏈, the transmitted channel extinction ratio was more than 26㏈.

  • 주파수 특성이 뛰어난 광반사기의 구현을 위한 협대역 반사기에 대한 이론적 해석이 이루어졌으며 grating을 사용하여 광공진을 발생시키며 도파로 결합기를 사용하여 공진 신호를 주도파로에서 다른 도파로로 유도하였다.
