  • As a noninvasive imaging meathod, optical coherence tomography system has been extensively studied because it has some advantage such as imaging of high resolution, low cost, and compace size configuration. The optical power of the sample signal reflected from an object is usually very small in optical coherence tomography(OCT) due to absorption and scattering in a sample material. Furthermore, there happens a serious loss of sample signal power in a fiber coupler because it does not transfer to a photodetector but return to the optical source. In order to improve the SNR of OCT system, basic Michelson and Mach-Zehnder interferometer types were configured then, we compared simulation with measurement of reference sample Therefore, an On in configuration of Math-Zehnder interferometer was demonstrated in order to improve the signal to noise ratio

  • We fabricated and characterized a compact endoscopic catheter for optical coherence tomography. The optical delay line (ODL), composed of a cylindrical piezoelectric transducer (PZT) and an optical fiber, was operated with a 1 kHz sinusoidal driving wave in the time-domain. When the ODL was driven with a sinusoidal wave function, the axial scanning speed was 6 m/s and the axial acquisition rate was 2000 line/s at a depth of about 3 mm. Endoscopic OCT images of a human finger and earhole were successfully obtained with an image rate of ten frames per second.

  • We have fabricated and characterized optical delay lines for optical coherence tomography, which is composed of cylindrical PZT(piezoelectric transducer) and single mode optical fiber. The polarization mode dispersion from the optical delay lines was compensated by the polarization controllers. By applying the duplex optical delay line, we minimized the thermal drift due to optical delay lines and obtained the scan range of 2 times that of a single optical delay line. The OCT system showed resolution of $18.6\pm0.5{\mu}m$, scanning range of 1.68mm, and scanning speed of 360.4mm/s.

  • In this paper, we have studied the OCT(Optical Coherence Tomography) system which has been advantages of high resolution, 2-D cross-sectional images, low cost and small size configuration. The characteristics of light source determine the resolution and coherence length. The light source has a commercial SLD with a central wavelength of 1,285 ill11, 35.3 nm(FWHM). The optical delay line is necessary to make equal with the optical path length to scattered light or reflected light from a sample. In order to make equal the optical path length, the stage that is attached to a reference mirror is controled by a step motor. And the interferometer is configured with the Michelson interferometer by using a single mode fiber, and the scanner can be focused on the sample by using a reference ann Also, the 2-dimension cross-sectional images were measured with scanning the transverse direction of the sample by using a step motor. After detecting the internal signal of lateral direction, a scanner is moved to obtain the cross-sectional image of 2-dimension by using step motor. A photodiode, which has high detection sensitivity and excellent noise characteristics has been used. The detected small signal has a noise and interference. After filtering and amplifying the signal, the output signal is demodulated the waveform And then, a cross-sectional image is seen through converting this signal into a digitalized signal by using an AID converter. The resolution of the sample is about 30${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, which corresponds to the theoretical resolution. Also, the cross-sectional images of onion cells were measured in real time scheme.

• Optical coherence tomography(OCT) is a noninvasive optical imaging tool for biomedical applications. OCT can provide depth resolved two/three dimensional morphological images on biological samples. In this paper, we integrated an OCT system that was composed of an SLED(Superluminescent Light Emitting Diode, ${\lambda}_0$=1305 nm bandwith= 141 nm), a reference arm adopting a rapid scanning optical delay line(RSOD) to get high speed imaging, and a sample arm that used a micro electro mechanical systems(MEMS) scanning mirror. The sample arm contained a compact probe for imaging dental structures. The performance of the system was evaluated by imaging in-vivo human teeth with dental calculus, and the results indicated distinct appearance of dental calculus from enamel, gum or decayed teeth. The developed probe and system could successfully confirm the presence of dental calculus with a very high spatial resolution($6{\mu}m$).

  • In this paper, we propose a micro vibro tomography(MVT) method, that can be used to visualize two-dimensional cross-sectional images and micro-vibration tomographic images in real time in a non-contact and non-destructive manner. The proposed method is based on the optical coherence tomography(OCT) technique, with an additionally customized image processing algorithm. The proposed method can detect the micro-motions or vibrations in sample structures by measuring the phase shift variations in the sample structures. In this study, we show the potential capabilities of the proposed MVT system for measuring the micro-vibrations generated when sound waves in a frequency range of 2~5 kHz are applied to an $80-{\mu}m$ thick latex phantom, which mimics the changes in physical structure of the human tympanic membrane while hearing. Additionally, three-dimensional volumetric images of the MVT method were recorded to observe the surface morphological changes in the surface of the phantom sample which mimics the human tympanic membrane while hearing.

  • Intravascular optical coherence tomography (OCT) enables imaging of the three-dimensional (3D) microstructure of a blood vessel wall. While 3D vascular visualization provides detailed information of the vessel wall and intraluminal structures, a longitudinal imaging pitch that is several times bigger than the imaging resolution of the system has limited true high-resolution 3D imaging. In this paper we demonstrate high-speed intravascular OCT in vivo, acquiring images at a rate of 350 frames per second. A 47-mm-long rabbit aorta was imaged in 3.7 seconds, after a short flush with contrast agent. The longitudinal imaging pitch was 34 micrometers, comparable to the transverse imaging resolution of the system. Three-dimensional volume rendering showed greatly enhanced visualization of tissue microstructure and stent struts, relative to what is provided by conventional intravascular imaging speeds.

  • In this study, we developed an integrated optical coherence tomography - photoacoustic microscopy (OCT-PAM) system to simultaneously provide optical absorption and scattering information. Two different laser sources, such as a pulsed laser for PAM and a superluminescent diode for OCT, were employed to implement the integrated OCT-PAM system. The performance of the OCT-PAM system was measured by imaging carbon fibers. We then imaged black and white hairs to demonstrate the simultaneous OCT-PAM imaging capabilities. As a result, OCT can produce 3-D images of both black and white hairs, whereas PAM is only able to image the black hair due to strong optical absorption of black hair.

  • We developed a real-time screening system using optical coherence tomography (OCT) to distinguish the fruitful melon seeds efficiently. Cross-section images of melon seeds infected with Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) showed an additional layer that did not appear in normal seeds. Additional layer appeared under $100{\sim}300{\mu}m$ from the surface of the seed. OCT can visualize the micro-structural and morphological changes of the internal seed structure. Real-time OCT seed screening system provided the real-time, non-destructive, cross-section image and quantitative information such as A-scan analysis of selected region in the cross-section image. We can distinguish the viral infection seeds while monitoring the averaged A-scan analysis graph in real-time by considering the second peak value of the graph which refers to the layer that occurred owing to the virus. Real-time OCT seed screening system could assist to distinguish the disease caused by CGMMV.
