  • In recent years, bullied students and rogue groups in teenagers make many serious social problems. In this paper we propose a novel approach that more objectively analyzes peer relationships among students. As the data for objective analysis, we use communication history records that are collected from various communication tools such as telephones, e-mails, and messengers. We use the simple intuition that communication history records implicitly contain peer relationship information. And, we adopt data mining techniques for the more systematic analysis. The proposed peer relationship analysis consists of the following steps. First, we formally define the notion of degree of familiarity between friends, and present mathematical equations that compute the degree based on communication history records. In the proposed method, we use the intuition that the degree of familiarity from student x to student y becomes higher as x makes the more communications with y. Second, by using the degree of familiarity between students, we find out the students who are potentially bullied. This procedure is based on the assumption that a bullied student may have a very small number of history records from other students to him. Third, we adopt the clustering technique, one of the most representative data mining techniques, to find out meaningful student groups by using the degree of familiarity. To use the clustering technique, we formally define the notion of similarity between friends based on the degree of familiarity, and perform clustering using the notion. Last, to show the practicality of the proposed method, we have implemented the method and interpreted the meaning of the experimental results. Overall, we believe that our research result provides an effective framework that analyzes peer relationships more objectively and more systematically.

  • Using data from the 2014 Survey on Internet Addiction performed by the National Information Society Agency, this study aimed to examine the influences of closeness with parents and awareness of Internet policies on Internet Addiction among adolescents in multicultural families in South Korea. Descriptive analyses showed that multicultural adolescents had on average 2.09 points on the whole scale of 15 items, but had on average 2.20 points on the sub-scale of withdrawal symptoms and on average 2.18 points on the sub-scale of tolerance symptoms. Multiple regression analyses revealed that multicultural adolescents' closeness with parents was significantly associated with lower levels of Internet addiction. Also, multicultural adolescents' awareness of Internet policies was also significantly associated with lower levels of Internet addiction. Based on the findings, this study suggested the necessity of providing parent education programs and enhancing awareness of Internet policies to reduce Internet addiction among adolescents in multicultural families.

  • This study aims to investigate peer socialization processes on early adolescents' prosocial behaviors in friendship networks. A longitudinal social network model (SIENA) was used to disentangle socialization process in prosocial behavior. Participants were fourth and fifth graders in South Korea from 39 elementary school classrooms (N=1,040, 48% girls). According to results, students select friends based on similarity in prosocial behavior (peer selection) was found in both prosocial behaviors. Peer influence effects were also observed in prosocial behaviors. Also, moderating effect of social relatedness was significant. In classes with high social relatedness, influence effect of prosocial behavior was significant. As a contrast, prosocial behavior was not socialized in classes with the low social relatedness. Results suggest that peernetwork play a critical role in the co-evolution of friendships, and prosocial behaviors. Findings yielded the importance of the socialization process and promoting healthy peer socialization environment.

  • In opportunistic networks, each message is delivered to the destination by repeating, storing, carrying, and forwarding the message. Recently, with the vitalization of social networks, a large number of existing articles have shown performance improvement when delivering the message and considering its social relational networks. However, these works only deliver messages when they find nodes, assuming that every node cooperates with each other unconditionally. Moreover, they only consider the number of short-term contacts and local social relations, but have not considered each node's average relation with the destination node. In this paper, we propose novel message sending techniques for opportunistic networks using nodes' social network characteristics. In this scheme, each message is delivered to the destination node with fewer copies by delivering it mostly through nodes that have high intimacy with the destination node. We are showing that our proposed scheme presents a 20% performance increase compared to existing schemes.
