(Oliver, W Hill, Pettus, W. C. and Hedin, B. A 1990).

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the direct and indirect effects of relevant variables on students' science achievements. Path analysis was conducted with data from middle school to examine the effects of perceived positive parenting attitudes, attitudes toward science, science inquiry skills on the science achievements of middle school students. A total of 502 middle school students from the metropolitan area participated in this study. Results suggest that students' perceptions of positive parenting attitudes had no direct influence on their science inquiry skills. However, the students' attitudes toward science and science inquiry skills were found to have meaningful direct effects on their achievements. Students' perception of positive parenting attitudes also presented a significant direct effect on their attitude toward science. In addition, the students' perceived positive parenting attitude revealed an indirect effect on science achievement, through their own attitudes toward science and science inquiry skills. Research findings called for more educational programs and teaching methods considering students' attitudes toward science and science inquiry skills to improve their science achievements. At home, parents need to have positive parenting attitudes to influence their children's attitudes regarding science.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the difference and relations in science related attitudes and science achievement in highschool students. Investigated differences between science related attitudes and science achievement and evaluated variations within city type, gender, grade level group. 404 high school students in Korea were sampled by cluster sampling method. Two instruments were used in this study. The ABC inventory(affection. behavioral intention. cognition scale of attitude toward science) was developed by the researcher(Lee, 1996, 1997). And MSAS(modified scientific attitude scale) has modified previous one. The major results are as follows: 1. Highschool students' Attitude toward Science is 3.24, 5-rating summative Likert scales. It showed slightly positive and favorable. 2. Highschool students' Scientific Attitude is 3.37, 5-rating summative Likert scales. It showed slightly positive tendencies of scientific attitude. 3. Findings indicated that middle' small city's students scored higher in Attitude toward Science and Scientific Attitude than metropolitan students. 4. The relationship between Attitude Toward Science and Scientific Attitude is 0.5716. The relationship between Scientific Attitude and Science Achievement is weaker than the relationship Attitude Toward Science and Science Achievement. 5. The results of three-way ANOVA indicated that were significant group differences(p<.05) in Attitude toward Science and Scientific Attitude. 6. After adjustment for the covariate(Scientific Attitude's score), statistically significant main effects of all group were found on the Attitude toward Science(p>.05). But after adjustment for the covariate(Attitude toward Science's score), statistically no significant main effects of all group were found on the Scientific Attitude(p>.05).

  • The purpose of this study was to develop the instrument for scientific attitudes in school, home and social situations and select the important elements of scientific attitudes. Looking into the elements of scientific attitudes in national and international research, the important elements of scientific attitudes students should have were selected as follows: Openness, objectivity, continuousness, criticalness, prudence, volunteerism, honesty, preparedness, collaboration, and curiosity. To develop the valid instrument of scientific attitudes, we moved forward with the step of making preliminary questions, the judgment step, and the validation examination step. Based on the elements of scientific attitudes and school, family, and social situations, the instrument of the scientific attitudes was developed. We discovered that Middle school students' scientific attitudes, according to their grade levels, appear to be significantly lower than those in the 7th graders and 9th graders. The scientific attitudes in school, home and social situation appeared high in order of society, home, and school. It appeared that there were no differences by gender.

  • This study analyzes the surveys of attitudes toward science, the peer relationship, the achievement motivations, and the parents' attitudes to science gifted education. It have been conducted to 53 scientifically gifted and 120 non-gifted students. The findings from the analyses suggest that there exist few meaningful differences in the attitude toward science, the motive for achievements and the peer relationship except in the parents' attitude to the gifted student education. This means that the recognition and the attitude of the parents have great influences on non-gifted students especially female students in the process of resolving to take future directions to science fields and choosing the gifted education center. Accordingly, we are in dire need of the changes in the social recognition of science and it is strongly recommended to seek for the ways of promoting science and supporting engineering graduates at the level of nation, thereby establishing legal and institutional foundations to make effective human resource arrangements.

  • We studied aspects of secondary school science teachers in the Chonbuk province concerning their science-related attitudes using the several measuring tools. We applied the multiple comparison to twelve factors at the science teachers 'backgrounds and analyzed the discrepancy in group levels. Science teachers feel half-hearted for the attitudes related to science teachers show a high correlation between the attitudes toward science and the scientific attitudes. We examined the tendency to the science-related attitudes of science teachers having various backgrounds within 5 percent differences of P-value. The contented teachers for their occupations marked higher than the other teachers in the tendency to the science-related attitudes, and the attitude-score of the science teachers graduated from regular colleges also marked higher than the teachers from the training institutes or the different majors. We have investigated the teachers just in Chonbuk province, but we should recognize that the scores in both the perception and the teachers are not improved comparing with the before-studies of Lee(1985), Park(1993), etc. As a result, the development of measuring tools which teachers can examine themselves as their features is needed and the educational systems to specialize the science education should be improved through the various programs for teachers' training courses.

  • The importance of science attitudes is more increasing in science education. Science attitudes may influence students' attainment, consistency and quality of classwork as well as their later views of science education and scientific occupations. According to the international comparative researches and longitudinal studies on Korean students' science attitudes, it has shown that the more grade, the less science attitude. This research was survey the science attitudes and learning environment variables, and then make a inquiry that causes of decline of science attitudes. To study this purpose, the participating students in this study will be selected from 3th to 11th grade. 6,925 participants were administered 3 times in questionnaires of science attitudes and learning environment variables during a year. The result of this study showed that science attitude got low after June. Science attitude was changed from 4th grade to 8th grade students. Science attitude much more decrease second semester than first semester, high school students' science attitude fell much. It was experience about science that cause the biggest effect in science attitude and other learning environment variables influence in science attitude change. Learning environment variables made different influence from students of increased and declined science attitude. As category that influence in science attitude, in elementary school were gender, area and grade, in middle school were grade and area, and in high school was area.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of educare teachers' science education knowledge and attitudes towards science on science teaching anxiety. 259 teachers of young children were recruited from 19 daycare centers and the data were analyzed through frequency, percentage, Pearson's correlations using PASW 18.0 and structure equation modeling using AMOS 7.0. The findings are as follows. First, educare teachers showed more than median scores in all science education knowledge, attitude towards science and science teaching anxiety. Second, in total 57% of the variance in teachers' science teaching anxiety was accounted for by teachers' science education knowledge and attitude towards science. This result implied that teachers' science education knowledge and attitude towards science should be improved in order to reduce teachers' science teaching anxiety.
