  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the career awareness, the preference for science and stereotypic image of the scientist between the gifted students and non-gifted students in elementary school. For this study, 52 gifted students and 80 non-gifted students were participated. The results were as follows: First, the career awareness of gifted students was significantly higher than that of non-gifted students. Second, the preference for science of gifted students was significantly higher in all sub-domains than non-gifted students. There was a significant interaction effect between group and gender in the scientific interest and the intention of solving problems. Third, analyzing stereotypic image test for scientist between the gifted students and non-gifted students, it proved that non-gifted students had more stereotypic image comparing with the gifted students. Forth, carrying out the correlation analysis on the career awareness and the preference for science, the career awareness and the stereotypic image of the scientist, it proved that there were significant correlations with each other. It revealed that the career awareness affected the preference for science significantly through multiple regression analysis.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate patterns of IT usage in gifted elementary students. There were 67 Computer Science gifted students and 38 Math/Science gifted students, a total of 105 students, who attended a Convergence Computer Science Camp for 3 days. They were given 20 questions on IT usage. The results showed that these gifted students started to use the computer from ages 7 to 9 (51.9%) and consider their level of usage as average (50.0%). They also expressed a desire to learn more to enhance learning. There were some differences between the Computer Science gifted students and Math/Science gifted students. The Computer Science gifted students spent more time at the computer, considered themselves as more capable in using the computer, and thought that the computer aided in learning more, Another difference is that Computer Science gifted students utilized the computer more for education and learning purposes(56.9%), whereas Math/Science gifted students used it for recreation purposes (40.5%). Furthermore, regarding areas of further interest, most Computer Science gifted students wanted to learn more about computer programming whereas Math/Science gifted students were more interested in learning presentation methods (26.3%). In conclusion, there was a difference between Computer Science gifted students and Math/Science gifted students in self-confidence, areas of utilization and computer related areas.

  • Students' perception of science-related career strongly influences the formation of career motivation in science. Especially, the high level of science gifted students' positive perceptions plays an important role in allowing them to continue to study science. This study compared perceptions of science-related career between general and gifted middle school students using semantic network analysis. To ensure this end, we first structuralize semantic networks of science-related careers that students perceived. Then, we identified the characters of networks that two different student groups showed based on the structure matrix indices of semantic network analysis. The findings illustrated that the number of science-related careers shown in science gifted students' answer is more than in general students' answer. In addition, the science gifted students perceived more diverse science-related careers than general students. Second, scientific career such as natural scientists and professors were shown in the core of science gifted students' perception network whereas non-research oriented careers such as science teachers and doctors were shown in the core of general students' perception network. In this study, we identified the science gifted students' perceptions of science-related career was significantly different from the general students'. The findings of current study can be used for the science teachers to advise science gifted students on science-related careers.

  • This study compared the characteristics and perceptions of science imaginary drawings done by scientifically-gifted and general elementary students. To do this, sixth graders (n=60) at three gifted science education institutes and sixth graders (n=51) at two elementary schools in Gyeonggi province were selected and administered the questionnaires. The analyses of the results indicated that the pictures of scientifically-gifted students included and integrated more academic fields and places than those of general students. The pictures of scientifically-gifted students were also more elaborate, but less painted. In addition, scientifically-gifted students perceived more positively the educational benefits of science imaginary drawing upon cognitive and affective aspects. However, there were no significant differences between scientifically-gifted students and general students in the understanding of science imaginary drawing, distribution of the pictures by times, perceptions on educational benefits of science imaginary drawing upon aesthetic aspects, and perceptions on difficulties in the processes of scientific imaginary drawing. A few scientifically-gifted students answered that science imaginary drawing was not more useful to them than to general students. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.
