In this study, we investigated the elementary school students' images of science class and the factors influencing their formations. 280 sixth graders were selected from nine elementary schools in Gyeonggi province and Gangwon province and the DASCT-C (Draw-A-Science-Class-Test Checklist) was administered. In addition, four students were individually interviewed in order to investigate their responses deeply. Analyses of the results revealed that the students' images of science class for four science subjects (physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science) were more 'student-centered' than 'teacher-centered' or 'neutral'. The students of the teacher with student-centered image of science class had also more student-centered images than those with teacher-centered images. Many students answered that the main factors affecting their images of science class were the experiences of impressed or funny science classes, the perceptions of wanted science classes, the active science learning experiences, the educational experiences outside the school curriculum, and the negative science learning experiences. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.
Modern society demands a new science teacher image. Compared to other school ages, elementary school students are the time when the teacher's influence plays a large role and is the time when they first encounter science subjects. The role of science teachers is very important as the starting point for the initial image of science learning and attitudes toward science by elementary science teachers. Therefore, it is very important to correctly establish an image of an elementary science teacher. The purpose of this study is to analyze the images of science teachers that elementary school students prefer and avoid according to their class situation. To this end, 534 elementary school students were divided into five classes: class type, class material presentation method, subject instruction method, subject content explanation method, and class atmosphere, and the image of science teacher who prefers and avoids is described in an open format. Concepts presented by elementary school students were analyzed using Semantic network analysis. The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, the image of a science teacher preferred or avoided by elementary school students was determined according to how the science teacher did the class. Second, elementary school students prefer activity-oriented classes such as experimental classes, and there is a need for classes to be conducted in this manner. Lastly, small changes and efforts of teachers in teaching methods are needed so that changes to science classes preferred by elementary school students can be achieved.
The modern society is rapidly changing, and accordingly, the required teacher image is changing as well. Middle school students are immature, when they undergo major changes both physically and mentally, and teachers have a great influence. How students perceive the teacher determines the relationship between teachers and students. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze what kind of teacher image middle school students want. The purpose of this study is to analyze the image of a science teacher who prefers and avoids each class situation perceived by middle school students. To this end, 502 middle school students were divided into five classes: class type, class material presentation method, subject instruction method, subject content explanation method, and class atmosphere, and the image of science teacher who prefers and avoids is described in an open format. Concepts presented by middle school students were analyzed through semantic network analysis (SNA). The conclusions of this study are as follows: first, in order to make middle school students interested in science, an inquiry-centered experiment class should be conducted. Second, the change of class by science teacher can change it into preferred science class. Third, student-centered classes should be conducted according to the level so that students can understand. Finally, science teachers continue to strive through communication between science teachers and students, and students and students, and look forward to changes in science classes through this.
The purpose of this study was to find out the image as science teachers recognized by pre-service science teachers. The data was collected from 312 pre-service science teachers from Kyungpook National University in Daegu and participants were asked to write about the image of science teachers they liked most and least in their secondary school years freely. The result of this research was as follows. The image as science teachers categorized 2 factors: science instructional situation, image of science teacher. Each factor was subdivided into more detailed ones. First of all, 'science instructional situation' category subdivided into lesson style, teaching-learning materials, teaching methods, and class atmosphere. In lesson style, 'experiment' and 'observation' gained the most favorable comments, and questioning-answering gained the least. In teaching-learning materials, print materials such as handouts, worksheets, reports were the most liked, and 'writing on the blackboard' was the least liked. In teaching methods, the 'detailed and systematic explanation of the theory and concepts' was preferred to rote learning and memorization lacking explanation. In class atmosphere, friendly and free atmosphere was the most preferred, and uncomfortable, boring one was the least preferred. Secondly, in 'image of the science teachers' category and 'quality as the teachers' sub-category, thoughtful and considerate teachers who respect students' personality was the most preferred. On the contrary, they didn't prefer teachers who were indifferent and humiliated students. Finally in 'characteristics of the teachers' sub-category, the participants liked clear, energetic voice, and mild expression, and they didn't like formal style, overly fancy clothes, etc. Based on the result of this study, more empirical study on the teachers' image is needed, and the thoughts of educational administrators, students, parents, and teachers should be reflected because an undesirable teacher can be advised and get opportunity to be a better teacher.

To provide students an alternative image of science and scientist, we developed five lesson plans that include scientists' joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure in their life. Through the 10 hour lessons with the five topics, we investigated the effect of our program on students' image change toward scientists, their science learning, and their career development in science field. Twenty high school students participated in our program and five of them were analyzed. The qualitative data included opinionnaire survey before and after the program, field note, video recording, students' worksheets, and interview. The science episode lessons that reflect the human side of scientists were designed in five steps. The first step is the one about imaging of scientists, the second step is the one about reading scientists' episode in their life, the third step is the one about investigating human side of scientists, the fourth step is the one about feeling sympathy in scientists' context, and the last step is the one about judging human side of scientists. Students participated in this program got to feel familiarity in scientists as well as confidence in science. By obtaining the alternative image of scientists after the class, it is expected that students will play roles of well-prepared supporters with scientific literacy.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the teacher-students interactions shown in the images of elementary science class by preservice teachers. We applied nine analysis criteria in three domains such as emotional support (climate, regard for student perspectives, teacher sensitivity), classroom organization (instructional learning formats, behavior management, productivity), and instructional support (quality of feedback, language modeling, concept development) in the aspects of positive or negative interactions The results show that majority of student-teachers tended to prefer positive interactions especially regarding instructional learning formats or concept development. For the image of avoided class, they tended to show negative interactions related to instructional learning formats or regard for student perspectives. However, they showed extremely lower frequencies for some categories of negative interactions. Female preservice teachers tended to have slightly higher frequencies for some positive interactions than their counterpart. The findings indicate possible approaches to teachers' professional development and further research.

The purpose of this study was to find out what pre-service teachers' views of as a good science class in evaluating class demonstrations. The study was conducted on 32 students in the second year of college who are attending teacher training schools located in central region, Korea. 32 pre-service teachers demonstrated the class with a group of 2 students, and a total of 16 lessons were demonstrated. They also evaluated the class by participating in 15 lessons except ones own class. Therefore all the collected evaluation papers were 480 sheets. This study analyze this evaluation paper and find out the good science class that earth science pre-service teachers think. As a result, the pre-service teachers' views of good science class analyzed by 3 categories. The three categories were 'Highly Engaged Instruction', 'Well-structured class design', and 'Qualitatively superior class materials'. In other words, the pre-service teachers' views that well-structured class design and active interaction were the requirements of good science class. This study confirmed that pre-service teachers can draw images of good science class through experience of class demonstration and class evaluation.
The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of science classes on positive science experiences and science learner identity, using smart devices in a future school: C middle school. We conducted a paired t test at the beginning and end of the first school year with first-grade students at the future school to investigate positive experiences with science (Shin et al., 2017). Additionally, first and second-grade students in future schools using smart devices wrote and drew their own depictions in science classes to explore science learner identity, based on a modified analytical framework (Luehmann, 2009). The results show that significant effects on science-related career aspirations, self-concepts, and academic emotions were produced by science classes using smart devices. Science classes using smart devices helped students improve their level of agency and activity, solve problems with immediate and sufficient feedback, and experience meaningful perceptions of the nature of science. On the other hand, if students were immature in terms of their use of smart devices, they felt pressured to participate in the classes. The results of this study can be used as a foundation for designing various classroom contexts for the use of smart devices.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of interview with a scientist and engineer on service performance assessment on science career orientation and image of scientists. Science track students in the 11th grade carried out the interviews and made powerpoint presentations. After the students' presentation in the chemistry class, the teacher made comments on the contents of the interviews. Students gave presentation in each class for a year. Before starting this assessment, students took science career orientation questionnaire and DAST (draw-a-scientist-test). These two tests were conducted again at the end of the year. The results of this study showed that there was no significant difference between pre- and post-test score for the science career orientation. However, a significant difference was observed in the 'preference for science learning' category. These results showed that the career decision of a high school student has already been fixed rigidly. On the other hand, there was a significant difference (p < 0.01) between pre- and post-test on the image of scientists. This demonstrated that the stereotypic image for a scientist was reduced by the interview performance assessment and that, students came to have an affirmative perception of scientists on service.

In the existing curriculum of the Elementary Computer Education, it is hard to improve the CPS(Creative Problem Solving) skill and logical thought since the 7th national curriculum emphasizes application programs and CAI softwares. To complement this drawback, it is required to teach the principal of the computer science but there is not many researches for what problems of teaching computer science exist and what the response of students are. Thus, we carried out a research to know whether the students of elementary school can understand principal of computer science in the field of subject matter education. We found that the students can learn the principle of Saving Bitmap Image if the class level is adjusted properly.
