  • This study aims to investigate the motivation for science learning of 3rd year high school students who choose different majors from their track. A total of 2,012 high school 3rd year students participated in this study. We used Science Motivation Questionnaire II (Glynn et al., 2011) to measure the students' science motivation and performed Rasch analysis, MANOVA and logistic regression analysis. First, results showed that 11.5% of students in the science track switched their pathway to a non-STEM major and 14.3% of students in the humanities track switched to a STEM major. In addition, there were gender differences in switching majors. Second, we found a significant difference in science motivation between two groups of students switching their major only in career motivation. Third, science motivation was the significant predictor of STEM major choice; in particular, career motivation was the most influential variable. Based on these results, we proposed that prediction of and paying close attention to students' career motivation are required before making decisions on which track to take.

  • The purpose of this study is to try to structuralize the perception of the mothers of science-gifted elementary students using the concept mapping approach. The mothers who participated in this research had children who were 5th and 6th graders selected as science-gifted by a regional education office, a science high school and two national universities in a city. One of the authors interviewed 26 mothers, and extracted 50 general statements of their perceptions about the career path of their children. Ten mothers who participated in interviews sorted a shuffled pack of statement cards. The categorization of the statements into the dissimilarity matrix was carried out by SPSS multidimensional scaling analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis to generate a conceptual diagram. After that 140 mothers rated each statement using a Likert-type response scale from one to five. The result showed six clusters of parental views such as were 'Burden of private education, grades and going to the next grade,' 'Thinking about career guidance in gifted education and school,' 'Parental roles in child career education,' 'Difficulties in career guidance at home,' 'Demand for strengthening the parental capacity for career guidance,' and 'Demand for social support.' 'Demand for social support' obtained the highest sympathy from mothers of elementary science gifted.

  • This study investigated when and how science gifted students decide their career planning. We used semi-structured survey and additional interviews from the students of Science High School in Daejeon area. We found 39.1% of science gifted students in 10th grade formed their career planning from their middle school periods. They had comparatively high levels of parenting support. The students chose their career fields based on their interests and aptitudes. However, some students were able to try and never give up with self confidence even when they had low scores, and teacher's reinforcements influenced positively. 71.3% of students thought that the grades take up the achievement of career development. Besides, the career programs which had specific purposes and directions were very effective by 33.3%~64.4%. Otherwise the effects were low as 2.3%~18.4%. Especially, R&E research programs didn't effect on students' career development and some students even frustrated with research. Based on the results, we need to reflect current career education and develop worthwhile career development programs for the science gifted students.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a theory appropriate to the context by identifying the career motivation formation process from the perspective of academic high school students using a grounded theory approach. In this study, participants were selected among non probability sampling was used for sampling by artificially reputational case selection methods. Forty two highschool students(21 male, 21 female) were participated in this study. Research data were collected mainly collected using in-depth interview data were analyzed by applying the grounded theory method of Strauss and Corbin (1998). According to the results, 319 concepts and 56 sub-categories, and 19 categories were derived n the open coding process. Academic high school students' formation of STEM career motivation were influenced by contextual conditions of "STEM-related career think that the instruments' causal conditions and 'STEM education experience in inside and outside of school' named 'STEM career understanding and self-understanding' using the strategy of being influenced in interventional conditions of social support and obstacle 'for the central phenomenon of "STEM efforts to achieve career goals, it appeared as a result of" satisfaction for STEM careers. And it had a 5-step process over time that the formation process of STEM career motivation. This is expected to provide homes, schools, communities, and contribute to have a new insight on the education of the country, given the direction of career education and counseling intervention and the basic data used to develop and apply STEM career education.

  • This survey was conducted on KOSEF's research internship awardees (FY 1998 to 2001) in order to investigate the employment status of doctoral and master's degree holders in Geosciences in Korea. An unemployment rate of KOSEF's research internship awardees (FY 1998 to 2001) was 32.0 percent for the doctoral and master's degree holders in Geosciences. 37.2 percent of employed doctoral and master's degree holders only obtained employment as a full-time and part-time status in industry, research institutions and academia in Korea. The U.S. Census Bureau conducted the 2001 survey of doctoral recipients (SDR). Based on this survey, most U.S. doctoral holders were employed and an unemployment rate for 2001 was only 1.3 percent of the Geosciences doctoral holders. KOSEF or related academic societies should be able to provide a more precise information of the employment status for new doctoral and master's degree holders in Geosciences by conducting the survey of doctoral and master's degree recipients. The results of this survey will be used to understand and to predict trends in employment opportunities in Geosciences for doctoral and master's degree holders.

  • The purposes of this study were to develop a scientific inquiry-based STEAM education program and to investigate its effect on changing middle school students' self-efficacy in science, job awareness, and attitudes toward STEM. A scientific inquiry-based STEAM program was developed with the theme of 'earthquakes', using the ADBA model, which was taking up the total of six class periods. The final program, which had been revised and completed after being pre-tested with middle school students, was implemented to 105 third-graders of middle school in a metropolitan city. One sample pre-post paired t-test before and after applying the program to the same group was conducted, and its effectiveness was analyzed in terms of self-efficacy in science, job awareness, attitudes toward science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Results showed that the STEAM program on the theme of 'earthquakes' demonstrated its effect on improving the students' of self-efficacy in science subject and their awareness of science-related jobs. Furthermore, this program indicated a statistical significance in improving middle school students' attitudes, awareness, and abilities, values, and continuing interest towards science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Therefore, we suggest that this scientific inquiry based STEAM program be used to help students to improve their scientific investigation skills as well as their creative and integrated thinking abilities in schools.

  • This study is the analysis of interview with science major student about the effect of science club experience on career decision. The special interview was planned and arranged to meet students as well as their teacher. Both of the student whose background had experience in the science club activity, field science education during their high school days are majoring in physics and biology. In Summary: 1) science teacher's guidance deeply impressed the student that they respect the teacher as a occupational role model. 2) they really enjoyed the hands-on activities joyful. 3) their experience lasted so long time to keep them to stay in science field. 4) they had an experience of speaking before peer science club students who had similar interest and talent. We found the above four factors were really influential to encourage the subject to major in science career.

  • In this research, two careers connectable with the contents of the curriculum of fifth to sixth grade elementary school students were selected among other promising future careers in biotechnology and medical engineering fields. 'Design-based promising future career STEAM program' was developed and its validity and effectiveness were verified. Reflecting recent issues, and complying with the STEAM standard (frame) instructional materials were developed through group deliberations for nine months, based on the achievement standards through an analysis of subject curriculum revised in 2009. This was prepared so that students are able to experience biotechnology and medical engineering related careers in a simulational form emphasized with creative design to make them prefer natural sciences and engineering careers and draw their interests and recognition of the relevant careers under the two disciplines. As a result of such application to STEAM Leader School students at the verification stage of the program, the contents and level of the program were verified suitable, receiving favorable reviews. And as a result of applying the developed program on other elementary school students, it was discovered that significant improvements were found in their career consciousness. Through this research, it was suggested that there is a need for a simplification of the curriculum content standards, a provision of 'standard for integration,' development of teachers' ability in reconstituting or organizing the STEAM and proceeding classes, continuous long-term support to see the effects of a policy or a program, and a reinforcement of career education integrated in the curriculum.
