  • This study investigated children's (grade 3 to 9) responses to assessment items on energy as a cross-cutting concept in order to get basic information for a learning progression. The assessment consisted of 8 ordered multiple-choice items at the contexts of electric circuit, mechanical energy of falling objects, phase change of matter, dissolution, biological phenomena of a lizard, food chain, radiative equilibrium between Sun and Earth, and the system of water cycling. Children's responses to each item were analyzed with using cross-tabulations in terms of grades and item option levels and Wright map and Differential item functioning based on Rasch modeled item response analysis. The results offered empirical evidence of children's development of understanding energy from relation between energy and its phenomena, types of energy, transfer and conversion of energy, towards conservation and equilibrium of energy for all of eight contexts. Children of each grade did not fully understand energy conservation. As grade goes up, their understandings of energy transfer and conversion were differentiated across the contexts and topics of energy. According to Rasch analysis, children had easier understanding of energy on dissolution and poorer understanding of energy on water cycling than that on other contexts. It was discussed and suggested that the results of this study help us organize science topics with regard to energy when developing new national science curriculum.

  • This study analyzes pre-service teachers' PCK dealing with visualization of the contents related to boiling point elevation and teaching methods in mock-lessons. As a result of analyzing pre-service teachers' knowledge based on PCK factors, most of the pre-service teachers accentuated on understanding boiling point elevation conceptually, whereas some of the others inclined to make students understand boiling point elevation in a scientific way, let the kids use numerical formulas to describe the concept, and motivate them to learn through the examples in real life. The pre-service teachers represented majority of the important facts of boiling point elevation as the knowledge required to understand things conceptually. However, they did not focus on improving the scientific thinking and inquiring levels of the students. Also, the pre-service teachers tended to teach at the level and order of the textbook. In some other cases, they considered the vocabularies and materials in the textbook (which could have been highlighted in the editing sequence) as the main topic to learn, or regarded the goal as giving students the ability to solve exercises in the textbook. It turned out that the pre-service teachers had a low level of knowledge of their students. It is recommended that they should make use of the materials given (such as data related to the misconception of students) during the training session. The knowledge of teaching and evaluating students was described superficially by the pre-service teachers; they merely mentioned the applications of models, such as the cyclic model and discovery learning, rather than thinking of a method related to the goals, or listed general assessment methods.

  • Many investigators have reported difficulties in changing the high school students' misconceptions on mechanics. By one possible solution to this problem, some researchers suggested that the students should be taught mechanics at a younger age to make conceptual changes possible. because as they get older they become less willing to change their ideas. The purpose of this study was to compare the patterns of students' conceptual changes on force by age, to find out whether older students were less ready to change their conceptions than younger students. Individual interviews were carried out with 35 students (average ages 13) in middle school class and 50 students (average ages 17) in high school class near by the middle school. Those students who held the misconcetpion that "motion-implies-force (Impetus conception)" were asked to read a student-centered refutational text (anomalous data). In the immediate and delayed posttest, the types of responses of the students were analyzed to find out the patterns of student's conceptual changes on force by age. In result, first, most of students had impetus conception. Some of the students aged 13 understood the force as terminologies related with everyday experiences, while the students aged 17 understood the force as scientific terminologies. Second, there was no evidence to suggest that conceptual change is more difficult for the students aged 17 than aged 13. Third, the students aged 13 showed diverse responses (plain acceptance, critical acceptance, plain rejection, critical rejection) to the refutational text, while the students aged 17 showed restricted responses (critical acceptance, critical rejection). A month later those students who showed the plain acceptance retrogressed unscientific conceptions, while those students who showed critical acceptance maintained scientific conceptions. We did not find out any evidence to suggest that conceptual change is more difficult for older students. These results need deeper investigation on the nature of the loss of plasticity in comparison with other important variables.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a concept test tool for seasonal change with reliability and validity, and to objectively observe and analyze sub-concepts and misconceptions related to the concept of seasonal change to explain the relationship between variables. The development process of the conceptual change concept inspection tool consisted of the development of the inspection tool development plan, the development of the inspection tool draft, the modification of the preliminary inspection and inspection tools, the development of the final inspection tool, and the implementation of this inspection. The developed test tool can be used to provide students with appropriate learning and help by examining students' degree of seasonal change concept formation and analyzing the cause of the difficulty in concept formation. As a result of regression analysis of 198 students in 6th grade using the developed test tool, it was found that the understanding of pre-learning concept and correction of misconception had a statistically significant effect on the concept learned in the seasonal change unit, and misconception had greater effect. Correction of misconceptions had a significant effect on students above the average score among the two sections created and cut based on the average score, and on the students below the average score, the understanding of pre-learning concept had a significant effect.

  • This study was aimed to understand the structures of preservice secondary school teachers' alternative conceptions on radioactive isotopes in the interior of earth. The structure of their conceptions were analyzed by the suggestions of Niaz (1988) based on the Lakatosian frameworks. The survey was carried out on a group of seventeen students who were major in science education. The research method was open-ended written questionnaire. The results of this study show that students had apparent alternative conceptions. The high temperature and pressure' explanation for radioactive decay in earth's interior had most import effects on their alternative conceptions. It was also intended to survey their conceptional change by our teaching strategies of the philosophy of science in order to construct science concepts.

  • This study aims to investigate the opinions of students who joined the Jeju Scientific Research Academy, a scientific research program with a mentoring system. The 50 middle school students and 50 high school students in the study were chosen as participants after being judged on their research plans. According to the study, students became more confident in research activities and could have a new point of view on research through interaction with a mentor. They were also very interested in the scientific research program of the Jeju Scientific Research Academy and found it helpful to understand the scientific concepts. Therefore the study shows it is necessary to consider actively the introduction of the mentoring system for the scientific research program. The follow-up study should be done to determine which factors influence on the inquiring minds and the understanding of scientific concepts of the students during the experience of the program.

  • The effects of clarified mapping strategy and placement of analog on middle school students' conceptual understanding were investigated. According to the usage of clarified mapping strategy and the sequence in presenting analogy, four types of learning materials were developed and pilot tested. Prior to the treatment, the field dependence-independence test was administered and a previous achievement test scores were obtained. The scores were used as blocking variables. The learning materials were read by randomly assigned middle school students (N=111), and the conceptions test was administered immediately and four weeks later. In the recall problems of immediate and retention test, there were no significant differences. In the application problems of immediate and retention test, however, the students learned with clarified mapping strategy scored significantly higher than those with analog-only. Field-independent students learned with clarified mapping strategy scored significantly higher in the immediate application than those with analog-only, and higher-level students learned with clarified mapping strategy scored significantly higher in the retention application than those with analog-only. In the immediate application, higher-level students learned analog first with clarified mapping strategy scored significantly higher in the immediate application than those learned target concept first with clarified mapping strategy. However, lower-level students learned target concept first with clarified mapping strategy scored significantly higher than those learned analog first with clarified mapping strategy.

  • Holland et al.(1986)propose four major factors to determine the outcome of the competition among the rules in an artificial intelligence system: match, sterength.specificity and support. They can be used as sriteria for the system to prefer rules in the cognition of objects from the given environment. The purpose of this paper is to explicate especially the concept of strength with that of likelihood in statistics. The stregth concept itself and the way of the application will be understood more fully by the likelihood concept.A concept is the more fruiful the more it can be brought into connection with otherconcepts.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate pre-service elementary teachers' views of the law of action-reaction by examining their degrees of understanding and Typically-Perceived-Situations (TPS). Data were collected from 177 Grade 3 pre-service elementary teachers. The results of analyzing these data show: First, the participants did not sufficiently understand about the law of action-reaction, and their degrees of understanding were different depending on the situation provided in the questionnaire. Second, in relation to the TPSs of the law of action-reaction, the participants thought of irrelevant situations to the law of action-reaction such as "a situation generated by inertia" as well as commonly relevant ones such as "a person pushing a wall", and had somewhat biased TPSs in terms of 'action type' and 'result motion type' of action-reaction. Finally, several suggestions on the science education for promotion of understanding about the law of action-reaction were given.
