  • This study aimed to investigate the life and works of Robert Hooke, an ingenious scientist in the era of scientific revolution, and to give some implications of invention education for science education. The publications and critics of Robert Hooke were analyzed to find out the personal setbacks how he showed excellent performances across the fields of science. The research finding showed that he tried to make geometric and visualized reasoning based on the empirical phenomenon, had much interest in the devices and methods for measurement and observation in the experiment, and made technical devices by himself. The ingenuity of Robert Hooke could be revealed by the rich resources in his childhood, his talent of drawing for depiction, and his colleagues and teachers with favors of diverse fields of disciplines and empirical tradition. As well, it was likely that his monistic viewpoint between the reality and scientific theories, led himself to develop interesting instruments for scientific experiments. Thus, this study suggested some implications to combine invention education with science education.

  • Psychological research on the relationships between creativity and knowledge can be divided into two main streams, called tension view and foundation view. However most of the studies in this area have been too much focused on creative products which had a limit in investigating creative processes. In this study, to identify the relationships, we employed neuro-scientific approaches to investigating EEG (electroencephalogram) activity from professional computer programmers(n=10). Also the EEG alpha TRP (task related power) was compared with each other. The procedures including resting conditions with eye closed were followed by ordinary thinking process, creative thinking processes in a professional domain and a nonprofessional domain. As a result of EEG activity analysis, alpha deactivation was observed mainly in temporal lobe, especially in left-temporal lobe during creative thinking process of professional domain. The findings suggest that neuro-scientific approach supports the tension view, suggesting that the knowledge could hinder creativity.

  • The goal of this study is to explore the characteristics of perceptual change among students majoring in arts on the nature of science and apply the results to science education. According to the study, it is important to consider the results of interaction between learners' aptitude and teaching method. Teaching the nature of science to first grade students explicitly, experimental inquiry strategy was applied to fine arts students, and teaching strategy of scientific history to music students. To find out which elements of the nature of science have come into view on modern philosophy of science, pre and post tests on the nature of science (VNOS-C) were conducted on the students. To find out specifically why views on the nature of science have changed, a case study was conducted focusing on students who showed changes in their views on the elements of the nature of science. In conclusion, this study suggests that by using experimental inquiry strategy and strategy of scientific history properly, it is possible to change students' viewpoints on the elements of the nature of science and on modern philosophy of science. Through explicit instruction, we were able to find some positive conceptual changes on the nature of science and the modern philosophy of science in terms of both quantity and quality. This shows that the students studying arts are experiencing a constructivist conceptual change on the nature of science, and that conceptual ecology and learning strategy are involved in this process. Therefore, it is thought that this study offers an important implication in organizing science education on the nature of science.

  • The consistency and balance of objectives by objective domains in units, sub-units and instructional units were investigated. The 6th elementary biology curricular teaching guidebooks were analysed. Domains of objectives are cognitive, inquiry process, instrumental skill, creative, affective and STS. Cognitive objectives were most dominant in all units, sub-units and instructional units. But no objective for creative domain were suggested. In unit and sub-unit, proportions of objectives were cognitive, inquiry process, affective, instrumental skill and STS domains in order. Objectives for cognitive and inquiry process domains were more than others in instructional units, Except cognitive and inquiry process domains, objectives for the others were not consistent in all units, sub-units and instructional units. Especially, the percentages of objectives for affective domain decreased in units, sub-units and instructional units orderly. These resulted from teaching objective domains categorized formally, Thus, it is necessary to develope curriculum and textbook to be consistent and balanced with objective domains and reflect upon the characteristics of them.
