An Analysis of Problems Related to Cloud Making Experiments in School Science Textbooks and Development of an Experiment Based on the Thermodynamic Theories (열역학적 관점에 근거한 구름발생 실험의 문제점 분석 및 개선방안에 대한 고찰)

  • In this study, we compared the contents of cloud making experiments in middle school science textbooks of 5th and 6th science curriculum from the viewpoint of methods and apparatus. And we analyzed the problems of the experimental methods and apparatus based on the thermodynamic theories. A new experiment was developed to solve the problems, and the effects of new experiment were compared with those of the experiments in the textbooks.

Content Analysis of the Elementary Science Textbooks in USA. -HBJ Science and Holt Science- (미국 초등과학 교과서 내용분석 -HBJ Science와 Holt Science를 중심으로-)

  • The contents of two elementary science textbooks are analyzed; they are HBJ Science and Holt Science. A) The ratio of the contents is as follows physics area, 21-27% ; chemistry area, 6-7% ; biology area, 32-41% ; earth science area, '27-31 %. B) The jobs related in science and technology are introudced in both textbooks. The kinds of jobs found in Holt Science and HBJ Science are 94 and 55, respectively. C) There cent developments in science and technology are introduced in Holt Science and HBJ Science are 57 and 46 times respectively. The introductoin of the recent development of science & technology and the jobs relcated in science & technology may interest children in science.

Multimedia Teaching Model for Observational Experiment and Major Contents of Science Education Guide Books for Secondary School in America (미국의 중등과학 교육안내서 내용과 관찰학습을 위한 다목적매개체 학습지도모델)

  • For development of teaching model for observational experiment and the major contents of science education guide books published for secondary school teacher in America, the actual survey to the secondary schools and the investigation of science education guide were carried out. The results were summarized as follows. 1. The major concepts of contents in science education books are constituted of introduction(9.67%), ability(8.94%), activity(6.61%), curriculum(11.61%), instruction planning(5.25%), instruction strategy(l7.74%), materials and facilities(1O.97%), evaluation(8.62%), society and community(l0.55%), guidelines(4.76%), practice(3.54%), and index(1.74%). 2. The constitution of multimedia teaching model for observational instruction was developed and arranged in order of six steps as observation, materialization, broad understanding, advanced study, application, and synthesis. This model was thought as the most effective for the achievement of the instructive goal for observational unit and others.

Analysis of Research Trends on Science Education in Korea (한국의 과학 교육 연구 내용분석)

  • This study was undertaken to analyze the research trends on science education in Korea. In this study the analysis for of trends of researches on science education, nine areas such as historical change of science Education, Processes of science learning science curriculum, science instruction, teaching-learning materials and equipment for science education, valuation on science education, survey on Korean science education, policy and management of science education, and natural science, were chosen for the analysir. All science education. thesis and dissertations in Korea, papers of science education published by the science center of the Seoul National University and the papers of the Journal of the Korean Association of Res Search in science Education were analyzed. The findings of this study are as follows: 1. Seventy percentile of science educational thesis and dissertations are on natural science areas. 2. About 14% of all papers being sampled is in science curriculum research category. There are few research studies on historical changes of science education, and teaching-learning materials and equipments for science education.

Content Analysis of the 5th grade Science Textbooks in Japan and Korea (한국과 일본 5학년 과학 교과서 내용 분석)

  • Science textbooks are very important materials in order to know elementary science learning in Japan and Korea. In this research the 5th grade science textbooks in Japan and Korea are analyzed by an analyzing category. The analyzing category is consisted of knowledge and scientific inquiry. Knowledge is divided by fact, concept, and rule. Scientific inquiry is divided by problem cognition, variable control, experiment planning, observing, measuring, categorizing, inferring, data transformation, predicting, correlation, cause and effect, result, communication, which are 13 subcategories. Analyzing methods are counting the frequency of each subcategory and tabulating the data. The results of this study are: 1. The frequency of scientific inquiry appeared in Korean 5th grade science textbooks is three times more than that in Japanese textbooks. 2. In scientific inquiry category, Japanese science textbooks emphasized observing, predicting, measuring and problem cognition; Korean science textbooks emphasized experiment planning, observing and problem cognition. 3. In knowledge category, fact subcategory is mostly emphasized in both countries.

Changes of the Format and Content of Science Textbooks of North Korean' Elementary School in the 2000's (2000년대 북한 소학교 자연 교과서의 체제와 내용 변화)

  • Since the national curriculum and textbooks are essential to understand the country's educational system, the importance of the textbook analysis should be emphasized to understand the education in North Korea. In this study, the science textbooks of North Korean elementary schools published since the year 2000 were analysed in depth and compared with those of 1990's, then the change in North Korean elementary science education was investigated. As for the external format, the total pages of 3rd grade textbooks of 2000's decreased notably. The 4th grade textbooks show an emphasis on the integrating feature of season-related chapters. The analysis of each category using a content framework of TIMSS shows that the content proportion relating to Earth Science and Physical Science was increased, while the proportion relating to Biological Science was decreased. Besides, changes of proportion of each subcategories were analysed and discussed.

Indian Designs in American Women's Fashion from 1960 to 1975 (미국여성복식에 나타난 인도디자인에 관한 연구, -1960년부터 1976년까지 -)

  • 본 연구는 1960년부터 1975년까지 미국여성복식에 나타났던 인도디자인(Indian design)의 내용을 여러 사회계층으로 나누어 세부적으로 검토, 분석해 보고자 하였다. 지금까지 하위문화 선도이론(subcultural leadership theory)외 하나의 예로서, 미국복식에 나타났던 인도디자인이 반문화적 현상(counterculral phenomenon)으로 청년복식에서 제일 먼저 채택되었으며 점차 사회전반의 복식에, 더 나아가 상류계층복식 (high fashion)으로 확산되었다는 이론을 사회과학 분야에서 주로 사용되어왔던 수량적 연구방법인 내용분석법(content analysis)을 이용하여 실증적으로 분석하였다. 분석된 자료는 총 1043개, 22가지의 종류(subcategory)의 인도 디자인으로. 이러한 결과로 인도의 영향을 받은 디자인이 미국사회 전체의 여성복식에 폭 넓게 나타났으며, 그 절정 시기가 1967년에서 1971년 사이로 이시대의 사회문화의 특징이 복식의 형태에 잘 반영되고 있음이 밝혀졌다. 더불어, 각 인도디자인은 최초 출현시기, 절정시기, 지속기간, 디자인의 기원(origin)의 면에서 복잡하고 다양한 양상을 보이므로, 이 시대에 보여진 인도디자인을 채택하는 복식현상은 각 디자인 별로 (case-by-case), 여러 단기간으로 나누어서, 복합적인 패션전파이론(fashion diffusion theory)을 적용하여 설명하는 것이 바람직하다고 보았다.

The Influence of Small Group Discussion on the Science Writing Ability of Elementary School Students (토론 활동이 초등학생의 과학글쓰기 능력에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of small group discussion on elementary students' science writing. In this study, four 6th grade students were chosen from an elementary school in Seoul. Students were involved in eight science writing classes and the contents of a small group discussion and interactions were recorded and observed. Students' science works were collected and analysed based on three domains: scientific thinking, logic and originality. The result of this study showed that the contents of a small group discussion greatly affected the scientific thinking domain. A low-achieving student received lots of help from a high-achieving student. It was easy to improve in the logic domain through the science writing classes. Average students got good grades in an originality domain when the subject was related to their real life. A small group discussion would have an effect on science writing ability positively if the students acquired proper guidance on the procedure and manner of discussion. The science writing lesson would be more effective if the learning group was organized homogeneously in the aspects of intelligence achievement and interpersonal relationships.

Analysis of relationship between exhibitions of public astronomical science museums and science curriculum revision, 2009 (천문과학관의 전시자료와 2009 개정 과학과 교육과정과의 관련성 분석)

  • Since Daejeon observatory has been built as the first astronomical science museum(ASM) whose theme is astronomy and space, many ASMs have been built or are being built by the governmental support. ASMs are requested to perform an important role as the educational venue that can be experienced the scientific activities for supplementing regular science education. This study investigated the analysis of the connection to astronomy-related contents of science curriculum revised in 2009 for exhibits of 17 ASMs. As a result, exhibits of ASMs show the low reflectivity to science curriculum and are very biased to standard of accomplishment. That is, they are not sufficient enough for the students to reach the learning objectives. However the astronomical scientific activities which are hard to be performed in regular school curriculum can be experienced at ASMs. Additionally, since exhibits of ASMs are easy to access and accept, they can provide the effective educational activities and learning effect. Therefore, ASMs have to be improved for supplementing regular science education through the informal curriculum of astronomical scientific activities by the producing and displaying good astronomy-related exhibits.
