  • The goal of the study was to examine undergraduate students' perception of the importance of the concept of system in science. The participants are six undergraduate students in the department of science education. Data sources included interviews and interview notes. Results showed that students understood the concept of system as a group of objects, space, and boundaries, which differed from a previous research study about its details. The students also were able to explain the concept of system related with the process of problem solving. The students recognized as well the selection of system for analysis of natural phenomenon, explaining that the selection of system was determined by purpose of the observer. Lastly, the students explained that the concept of system was useful for science learning because it was strongly related with other science concepts, understanding of interactions, and learner's cognitive development.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest improvements in the science concepts and inquiry activities presented in the earth science section in the 2015 revised curriculum elementary science textbooks. For this study, two science educator and three elementary school teachers developed a survey questionnaire to investigate science concepts, inquiry activities, and suggest improvements. The survey was conducted two times, and 30 elementary school teachers and three earth science professors (geology, meteorology, astronomy) participated in the survey. As a result, it was investigated that eight concepts in the solid section, three concepts in the fluid section, and one concept in universe and integration section contained misconceptions. It was investigated that the content of inquiry activity needs to be supplemented, with seven elements in solid section, three elements in fluid section, and one in the universe and integration section. According to the research results, if the textbook is revised, it is necessary to accurately confirm the science concepts or content of inquiry activities. Also in the case of science concepts presented in textbooks, it will be necessary to consider not only the scope and sequence of contents but also the process of learning progression.

  • This study is for better understanding about the process of students' conceptual change. As a starting point, it is assumed that the process of students' conceptual change can be viewed as the process of the successive refinement and articulation of students' conceptual framework. Based on the theoretical review of conceptual change literature, various processes, which can be involved in the above assumed process, can be found. And also, by analyzing the process of development of scientific knowledge about Planck's blackbody radiation law and Bohr's atom, six types of processes of refinement and articulation of scientific knowledge can be found. It is hoped that these theoretical discussions can guide the direction for obtaining and interpreting the students' real responses during the process of conceptual change.

  • In this study of the relative effectiveness of constructivist and non-constructivist approaches to shadow activity for young children, 59 children in two kindergarten classes were assigned to constructivist or non constructivist conditions. Each group participated in 12 units covering shadow search, shadow making, changing shadow size, changing shadow position, and shadow disappearance. Analysis of covariance of differences between the mean scores of the two groups on the posttests of shadow concepts and scientific attitudes revealed that the children in the constructivist group performed better than the children in the non-constructivist group. This confirms the constructivist approach to shadow activities as good science activities for young children by promoting their active experimentation using reasoning about light to foster spatio-causal relations construction.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of student-centered instruction using analogies for middle school students' learning of the photosynthesis concept. Participants in this study were 8th grade students at a middle school in Seoul (N=132). The students were divided into two groups for implementation. In the experimental group the teaching materials containing analogies were used while the contents of a science textbook were taught in the control group. The results of this study indicated that student-centered instruction using analogies was more effective than traditional methods of instruction for understanding photosynthesis concepts and the students' attitude toward the science class. Analogies were also found to contribute to developing an understanding of the photosynthesis concept through activating students' prior knowledge, focusing on structural features of the target concept and elaborating knowledge. In addition, analogies play an important role in activating small group discussions, improving students' meta-cognitive skills, and revealing and revising of misconceptions about photosynthesis. Moreover, analogies can help improve students' interests and self-efficiency in science classes.

  • Understanding of how teachers change instruction can help predict what kind of educational materials is supportive or appropriate. On the basis of this idea, we explored elementary teachers' PCK progression on specific topics of astronomy: planet size and distance in solar system. To identify the development of PCK over time, we utilized learning progression (LP) as a conceptual framework. The progression of teacher PCK can also be illustrated as the hypothetical pathway from novice to expert like LP. Eight 5th grade elementary teachers participated in this study. We observed participating teachers' astronomy classes with the same topic. In order to document topic-specific PCK of participating teachers, we developed an analytic protocol consisting of four categories: knowledge of curriculum, knowledge of teaching strategies, knowledge of assessment, and astronomical thinking practice. In addition, we monitored the changes in the four participating teachers' PCK for two years in order to validate the evidences of the PCK progression. Participating teachers in this study took some intervention by attending a four-week pre-meeting with the researchers to profile an adaptive instruction. Through this research, we profiled four and five different levels of PCK progressions in three knowledge components (curriculum, teaching strategies, student assessment) and one astronomical thinking practice (systems thinking), respectively. Participating teachers demonstrated various levels and pathways in each component of PCK. This study released the empirical evidences in fostering instructional scaffolding, which is appropriate to the level of PCK of science teachers on specific topic.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the teacher-students interactions shown in the images of elementary science class by preservice teachers. We applied nine analysis criteria in three domains such as emotional support (climate, regard for student perspectives, teacher sensitivity), classroom organization (instructional learning formats, behavior management, productivity), and instructional support (quality of feedback, language modeling, concept development) in the aspects of positive or negative interactions The results show that majority of student-teachers tended to prefer positive interactions especially regarding instructional learning formats or concept development. For the image of avoided class, they tended to show negative interactions related to instructional learning formats or regard for student perspectives. However, they showed extremely lower frequencies for some categories of negative interactions. Female preservice teachers tended to have slightly higher frequencies for some positive interactions than their counterpart. The findings indicate possible approaches to teachers' professional development and further research.

  • The purpose of the study was to suggest the characteristics and goals of the science teaching model for use as criteria in selecting the appropriate teaching model for science in secondary schools. These characteristics and the goals have been organized based on the analyses of the literature on the teaching and/or instructional model. The teaching models have been classified into four areas, and the characteristics and goals of each area have been summarized as follows: $\cdot$ Traditional models: teaching of scientific knowledge through lectures, acquisition of scientific knowledge through discovery, acquisition of inquiry process skills through inquiry-based teaching/learning $\cdot$ Transitional models: demonstration and discovery as teaching strategies, acquisition of inquiry process skills through inquiry approach, acquisition and change of scientific knowledge $\cdot$ Modernistic model - conceptual change models: differentiation of scientific knowledge, exchange of misconceptions for scientific concepts - learning cycle models: conceptual differentiation, exchange of misconceptions, acquisition of science process skills Also described in this paper are the model's characteristics and goals that can be used as the criteria for selecting the appropriate teaching model for the subject that will be taught.
