The fruit soluble solids and acidity decreased during storage regardless of fruit size, fruit firmness decreased also, and the decreasing rate of the firmness in large fruit was higher than small. The ethylene production of fruit was increased during storage, and there was the peak of fruit respiration rate at 2 and 6 weeks after harvest. The calcium and magnesium content was the highest in peel, the lowest in flesh, and intermediate in core. Especially, the calcium content in the outer flesh was lower than in the inner flesh, and the magnesium content in the middle part of flesh was lower than in the other parts. The Ca/Mg ratio in the inner flesh and the K/Ca ratio in the outer flesh were higher than in the other parts.
This research was conducted to investigate effect of ethephon on fruit enlargement and coloring of 'Fuyu' persimmon ($Diospyros$$kaki$). At 7 weeks after ethephon treatment, fruit weight and diameter became significantly heavier and longer in 80 and $100mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ than the other concentrations of ethephon. Fruit peel hardness decreased with increasing ethephon concentration. The decreased levels were apparent with the treatments beyond $40mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ at the beginning, and then with those beyond $60mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. Hunter $a^*$ and $Chroma^*$ of fruit peel treated with ethephon over $20mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ were significantly higher compared to those with control ($0mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), but there were no significant differences among those with the ethephon treatments over $20mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. The increased levels of the $Chroma^*$ were apparent with the treatments beyond $60mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ at the beginning and then with those of 20 and $40mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. ${\beta}$-Carotene and lycopene contents of fruit peel were higher with the ethephon treatment beyond $40mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. Although the ethephon application at 20 and $40mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ had no effects on fruit enlargement, but fruit coloring was advanced by 2 weeks with the application at $40mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$.

This study was undertaken to elucidate the effects of virus and viroid infections on the growth of trees and the attributes of fruit quality in 'Hongro' apples. Trials were initiated using virus-infected, viroid-infected, combined virus/viroid-infected, and uninfected apple trees in an experimental apple orchard at the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science in 2019. The growth of each tree was measured annually and compared between virus-free and virus/viroid-infected trees. Fruits were harvested from all apple trees, and selected attributes of fruit quality, including yield, weight, firmness, titratable acidity, and anthocyanin content, were determined in September 2021-2022. The results revealed significant differences among virus-free trees and those infected with either virus, viroid, or a combination of virus and viroid. Infection with viral and viroid diseases led to reductions in tree height (14.0%), trunk area (23.1%), fruit yield (65.0%), fruit weight (34.4%), and anthocyanin content (39.8%), while increasing fruit firmness (33.2%) and titratable acidity (39.8%), respectively. We anticipate that our research findings will also be beneficial for apple virus and viroid disease control, as well as apple cultivation management.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on fruit quality and incidence of physiological disorders for keeping freshness during marketing period in Asian pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) 'Wonhwang' and 'Whasan'. Fruits were treated with $1{\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 1-MCP for 12 hours at $25^{\circ}C$, at two or three stages of ripeness as determined by days after full bloom (DAFB). Fruits were harvested at 130 and 140 DAFB in early season cultivar 'Wonhwang' and 135, 145, and 150 DAFB in mid-season cultivar 'Whasan', respectively. Fruits were stored at $25^{\circ}C$ for 21 days and measured the flesh firmness, weight loss, soluble solids, acidity, ethylene, respiration and severity of physiological disorders at week interval. 1-MCP treatment to 'Wonhwang' pears harvested at 130 and 140 DAFB effectively delayed firmness loss during storage at $25^{\circ}C$. Untreated fruits of 'Wonhwang' pears harvested at 130 DAFB showed 32.3 and 10.1N of firmness after 14 and 21 days of shelf-life at $25^{\circ}C$, respectively, while those of the 1-MCP treated fruits showed 39.4 and 33.1N during same period. In the fruits harvested at 140 DAFB, the firmness of untreated fruit was lowered to 14.8 and 6.6N after 14 and 21 days, respectively, but those of 1-MCP treated fruit were 35.0 and 33.3N, respectively. Whereas, 1-MCP treatment delayed firmness loss only in the fruit harvested late (150 DAFB) in 'Whasan' pears. Higher soluble solids content and acidity during extended shelf-life were apparent in 1-MCP treated 'Wonhwang' pears, while those of 'Whasan' pears were little changed. 'Wonhwang' pears showed a relatively high ethylene production (maximum $0.58{\mu}l{\cdot}L^{-1}$) in the fruits harvested late than early harvested one. 'Whasan' pears showed little amount of ethylene production regardless of extended shelf-life. 1-MCP treatment to 'Wonhwang' pears decreased respiration rate following shelf-life, 42 and 50% reduction were observed at 14 days of shelf-life when compared with those of untreated ones harvested at 130 and 140 DAFB, respectively. No reduction of respiration rate by the treatment of 1-MCP was detected in 'Whasan' pears which showed considerably low respiration rate compared with 'Wonhwang' pears. Harvest time influenced the level of physiological disorders together with extension of shelf-life in both the cultivars. 1-MCP treatment completely blocked the incidence of internal browning of 'Wonhwang' pears harvested at 130 DAFB, and reduced the incidences of pithiness and core browning, while it promoted the flesh spot decay disorder regardless of harvest time. 1-MCP treatment was of little benefit for the prevention of physiological disorders in 'Whasan' pears compared with those of 'Wonhwang'.
In this study, we evaluated the changes of fruit quality indices during fruit development and ripening in Korean new pear cultivar 'Changjo', developed from a cross between 'Tama' and '81-1-27' ('Danbae' ${\times}$ 'Okusankichi') in 1995 and named in 2009, to determine appropriate harvest time and to enhance the market quality and broaden the cultivation area. The fruits of 'Changjo' pears harvested from 132 days after full bloom (DAFB) to 160 DAFB. Fruit growth and quality indices were monitored at 1 week interval by measuring fruit weight, length, diameter, firmness, and taste related quality indices. The calculated fruit fresh weight increased continuously with fruit development and reached to an average of 594g on Sep. 20 (160 DAFB). The ratio of length to diameter declines as fruit maturation progress, resulting in 0.898 for ripe fruit stage as a round oblate shape. Flesh firmness of 'Changjo' pears showed over 30N until 153 DAFB and then decreased abruptly with fruit ripening, reaching a final level of about 26.44N on 160 DAFB. Starch content of fruit sap was also decreased abruptly after 146 DAFB which decreased almost half of the fruits harvested at 139 DAFB. In parallel with the decrease of flesh firmness, ethanol insoluble solids (EIS) content decreased sharply with fruit ripens, only 50% of EIS was detected on the fruits harvested on 160 DAFB when compared to that of the fruits harvested on 139 DAFB (Aug. 30). The maximum value of soluble solids contents was observed in the fruits harvested on 153 DAFB, resulting in $14.2^{\circ}Brix$. The changes of skin color difference $a^*$ which means loss of green color occurred only after 139 DAFB, coincide with the decrease of SPAD value of the fruit skin. The sugars of the 80% ethanol soluble fraction consisted mainly of fructose, sorbitol, glucose and sucrose, also increased during maturation and ripening. Fructose and sucrose contents were larger than those of glucose and sorbitol in flesh tissues. These results were explained that stored starch is converted to soluble sugars during fruit maturation, mainly in fructose and sucrose increasing the sweetness of this cultivar. Total polyphenols were increased up to middle of fruit maturation (146 DAFB) and then decreased continuously until the end of fruit maturation. Consequently, our results suggested that the commercial harvest time of 'Changjo' pears should not be passed 153 DAFB and late harvest of this cultivar would not good for quality maintenance during shelf-life. As a result of the post-harvest low-temperature acclimation experiment during the short-term transportation period, fruits harvested at 146 DAFB tended to maintain higher firmness after 14 days of simulated marketing at $25^{\circ}C$ compared to fruits harvested at 153 DAFB regardless of temperature set. And, the slower the rate of decrease to the final transport temperature of $5^{\circ}C$, the higher the incidence of internal browning and ethylene production. Therefore, in order to suppress the physiological disorder and to maintain the fruit quality when exporting to Southeast Asia in the 'Chanjo' pears, it is desirable to lower the temperature of the fruits within a short time after harvest and to set the harvest time before 146 days after full bloom.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of 1-MCP, an ethylene action inhibitor, and several postharvest treatments including ethylene scrubbing on fruit quality and respiration for keeping marketability in 'Janhowon Hwangdo' peach ($Prunus$$persica$ Batsch). 1-MCP at the rate of $1.0{\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$ showed best results in maintenance of fruit firmness and external appearance such as skin color. The ethylene production was strongly reduced by 1-MCP treatment at 0.5 or $1.0{\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$ but respiration rate was only suppressed at $1.0{\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$ during 6 days of shelf life at $20^{\circ}C$. Mature fruits (harvested 1 week before full commercial maturity) were much highly responsive to $1.0{\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of 1-MCP compared to those of commercial maturity. At the concentration of $0.5{\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of 1-MCP did not affect fruit marketability compared to untreated control. Beneficial effects of carbon ceramic as an ethylene scrubber were also found such as delay of firmness loss and deterioration of external appearance at $10^{\circ}C$, but these positive effects on fruit quality remained for only 5 days. The application of ethylene scrubber on the shipping carton boxes was effective on keeping firmness of immature fruit pretreated with 1-MCP when compared with mature fruit.

Postharvest nut quality, and changes of soluble solids content and kernel hardness during cold storage in 13 Korean prevailing chestnut cultivars were investigated to establish the chestnut grading and standardization for marketing and processing industry. Chestnut quality attributes such as nut weight, soluble solids content, kernel hardness, % with the pericarp split, and % of polyembryonic nuts were measured from 2001 to 2005. There were significant difference among cultivars in quality characteristics, and also annual variation within same cultivar, corresponded to the high genetic and environmental variability. During cold storage at $2^{\circ}C$ for 16 weeks, remarkable changes in soluble solids content were observed, and Isseumo showed the highest increase of 8% at 16 weeks of cold storage compared with postharvest. In case of most cultivars except early ripening cultivars, soluble solids content of chestnut increased until 12 weeks during cold storage, followed by decreased gradually thereafter. Kernel hardness of most cultivars except lshizuchi during cold storage increased slightly, but it was not statistically significant. This work would be a useful reference to the quality of each chestnut cultivar for the growers and breeders alike.

Fruit drop is a serious problem in plum trees during fruit development after pollination and fertilization. In order to increase fruit yields, physiological fruit drop in plum trees at the early stages of fruit development must be reduced. In this study, the effect of gibberellic acid paste (GA paste 2.7%) applied on 'Formosa' plum was determined to reduce fruit drop. GA paste was applied one time on one set of the fruit stalk at 3 days after full bloom (DAFB), and on another set of the fruit stalk at 13 DAFB, and then the fruit-set rate was observed at 70 DAFB. GA paste application increased the fruit-set rate up to 61%. In 'Formosa', the time of GA application had a strong influence on reducing fruit drop. GA application increased the fruit-set rate up to 61% in treatments at 3 DAFB, and to 15% in treatments at 13 DAFB when the fruit-set rate was 5% in the control group. The same results were observed in 'Honey Red' and 'Akihime' plums. GA application impacted on fruit enlargement in the 'Formosa' cultivar, compared with the control trees, which had no GA application. The rate of fruit enlargement with GA application was similar to that of the control fruits until 70 DAFB, whereas the enlargement rate was slightly higher in the GAtreated trees than the control from 70 DAFB until harvest. In GA-treated fruit, fruit weight increased more than in the control, while total acidity and firmness was lower than in the control group. Additionally, GA application accelerated sucrose increase in maturing fruit. Our data indicated that GA paste application can reduce fruit drop, and subtly promote fruit enlargement and maturation in plum trees.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of ethylene adsorbent removing ethylene gas produced from apple fruits in poly ethylene film bag storage. The treatment of ethylene adsorbent was not effected the change in soluble solids and organic acid content of fruits. The fruit softening was remarkably delayed by the absorbent treatment, and the more amount of it was the more effective. The ethylene evolution and respiration of fruits reduced or decreased by this treatment during storage. The ethylene adsorbent for 'Fuji' apple fruit was effective more than 30g per 10kg fruits.
Postharvest dipping of vacuum infiltration treatments of 'Chojuro' pear fruit in $CaCl_2$ resulted in increased calcium content, especially in fruit peel and outer flesh such as just below peel. As $CaCl_2$ concentrations increaced from 2% to 8% in dipping treatment, calcium content became higher. But vacuum infiltration under 200-600 mmHg did not affect and dipping and vaccum infiltration did not have any difference in fruit calcium content. Decreasing of fruit firmness determined at 4 weeks during storage was slower in fruits with $CaCl_2$ treatment than control.
