A Solution to Large Strain Resonant Column and Torsional Shear Tests Apparatus (대변형율 시험을 위한 공진주/비틂전단 시험기의 해결방안)

  • In this study, the limitations of large strain resonant column and torsional shear tests apparatus are described and solutions to the limitations are also described. The limitations are rotational distance, limited torque, and measurable deformation system, respectively. To resolve the rotational distance, the bottom platen was modified. And the four-armed drive plate was modified into eight-armed drive plate and the drive coil connection was changed to obtain powerful torque.

  • According to the seismic design criteria for structural buildings in Korea, the ground is classified into 5 types based on the average shear wave velocity measured from elastic wave tests on site and seismic load applied to the structure is estimated. However, elastic wave tests in site, however, on the engineering fill, cannot be performed during the construction period. Therefore, to evaluate shear wave velocity considering field conditions, resonant column (RC) and torsional shear (TS) tests are performed and compared with various elastic wave test results. As a result, if confining pressure for the tests using engineering fill are considered properly, we can obtain similar results comparing with those of elastic wave tests. In addition, by considering the effect of maximum shear modulus and confining pressure by RC/TS tests, n values shows typical values ranging from 0.434 to 0.561 so that utilization of RC/TS tests can be useful to infer shear modulus in field.

Modifications of RC/TS(Resonant Column and Torsional Shear) Device for the Large Strain (대변형율 시험을 위한 공진주 비틂전단 시험기의 수정)

  • Conventional RC/TS(resonant column and torsional shear) device usesa specimen with an aspect ratio(height-to-diameter) of 2:1 and this generates a maximum shear strain in the sample of about 1.5% at the maximum rotation of the drives system. The objective of this study is to modify RC/TS device to generate higher strain amplitude. The modifications include a new base pedestal to overcome the limitations in the travel of the drive system and modification of coil wiring to increase torque. The effects of the new coil wire on torque in the electro magnetic drive system were evaluated and the application of modified device was illustrated using sand soil.

The effects of End Platens on Effective Stresses in Resonant Column (RC) Specimens during Consolidation (공진주 시험기 단부가 압밀중인 시료의 유효응력에 미치는 영향)

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of rigid end platens on effective stresses in soil mass during consolidation. The friction between the teeth of top cap/base pedestal and the specimen during consolidation decreases the radial and tangential effective stresses in RC specimens. However, it is unpractical to measure the effective stresses in the soil specimen. Two approaches were used to evaluate the state of stress in RC specimens during consolidation. First, careful measurements were made of small strain shear modulus, $G_{max}$ in specimens with carefully controlled void ratios and stress histories, to infer the state of stress. And second, a finite element analysis was performed to analytically evaluate the effect of various soil parameters on the state of stress in RC specimens during consolidation. By combining these experimental and analytical results, an example was performed to predict the average state of stress in RC specimens during consolidation.

  • Deformational characteristics of soils, often expressed in terms of shear modulus and material damping ratios, are important parameters in the design of soil-structure systems subjected to cyclic and dynamic loadings. In this paper, deformational characteristics of dry sand at small to intermediate strains were investigated using resonant column/torsional shear(RC 175) apparatus. Both resonant column(dynamic) and torsional shear (cyclic) tests were performed in a sequential series on the same specimen. With the modification of motion monitoring system, the elastic zone, where the stress strain relationship is independent of loading cycles and strain amplitude, was veri tied and hysteretic damping was found even in this zone. At strains above cyclic threshold, shear modulus increases and damping ratio decreases with increasing number of loading cycles. Moduli and damping ratios of dry sand are independent of loading frequency and values obtained from pseudostatic torsional shear tests are Identical with the values from the dynamic resonant column test, provided the effect of number of loading cycles is considered in the conlparison. Therefore, deformational characteristics determined by RC/TS tests may be applied in both dynamic and static analyses of soil-structure systems.

Evaluation of Dynamic Properties of Crushed Stones Used as Reinforced Trackbed Foundation Materials Using Midsize Resonant Column Test apparatus (중형 공진주 시험기를 이용한 국내 쇄석 강화노반재료의 동적특성 평가)

  • In this study, a mid-size RC test apparatus equipped with analyzing program is developed that can test samples up to D=10cm diameter and H=20cm height which is larger than usual samples of D=5cm and H=10cm used mostly in practice. Thus, crushed stones with larger grains up to 38mm in diameter used mostly in Korea as reinforced trackbed materials in track construction could be considered effectively than conventionally used RC apparatus for evaluation of the dynamic properties of the materials by using the newly developed RC apparatus. The RC test apparatus was designed and assembled based on the concept of fixed-free fixity conditions and driving mechanism proposed by Stokoe. Using the developed RC test apparatus, three types of representative crushed reinforced trackbed materials were tested in order to get the dynamic properties of the materials such as $G/G_{max}$ reduction curves and damping ratio D. For comparison purpose, a small RC test apparatus has been used to test the same materials.

  • The bender element method is an experimental technique to determine very small strain ($<10^{-3}\%$), elastic shear modulus of a soil, $G_{max}$ by measuring the velocity of shear wave propagation through a sample. Bender elements have been applied as versatile transducers to measure small strain modulus of wet or dry soils in various laboratory apparatus. In this paper, bender element (BE), resonant column (RC) and torsional shear (TS) tests were performed on Toyoura sand at various testing conditions using the modified Stokoe type RC/TS testing equipment capable of performing BE test. Based on the results, applicabilities of the testing method using bender element were evaluated by comparing the values of $G_{max}$ obtained from RC/TS and BE testing methods. For more dependable evaluation, the loading frequency of each testing method was considered for the results obtained for samples in saturated condition by adapting Biot's theory.

  • For the ground resrxmse analysis, both in-situ and laboratory testing techniques such as downhole, SASW, resonant column and torsional shear tests were perlormed for Hong-Seong area. The grOlmd upper 30m is classified as SD since it has an average shear wave velocity as 209m/s. The response specLrums obtained by site-specific analyses generally satisfied the seismic code, but near the resonance period the motion was evaluated to be higher than the code.

  • The water content of soil near the ground subgrade varies seasonally, and dynamic deformational characteristics of soil are affected by the variation of water content. Contrary to previous studies which used various specimens of different compaction moisture contents, the influences of water content and capillary Pressure on dynamic deformational characteristics of soil were investigated using the given specimen controlling the matric suction. RC/TS(resonant column and torsional shear) testing equipment was modified so that it can control water content with changing capillary pressure(matric suction). RC/TS tests were performed on subgrade soil collected in the KHC(Korea Highway Corporation) test road. In the field, the cross-hole tests were performed and the water contents were measured at the same site to verify the feasibility and applicability of RC/TS test results. As water content decreased, the tendency of increasing shear moduli in field was well matched with laboratory test results.

  • 본 논문에서는 배수성(저소음)포장을 포함하는 2-Layer 아스팔트 포장의 상부층과 하부층의 역학적인 특성을 평가하는데 목적이 있다. 연구 방법으로는 슈퍼페이브 배합설계로 2-Layer 아스팔트 포장의 상 하부층 시편을 제작하였으며, 시편 상부층의 최대공칭치수는 4.75mm이고 하부층의 최대공칭치수는 13mm이다. 이 시편에 대한 기본 물성 시험 실시 후 마샬 안정도 시험에 대한 안정도와 흐름값을 평가하였다. 그리고 상부층과 하부층의 자유단 공진주 시험을 통해 탄성계수(E)를 측정하였고, 비파괴 시험법인 슈미트해머(Schmidt hammer)를 이용해 반발경도를 측정한 후 강도를 추정하였다. 또한 일축압축시험으로 측정된 압축강도로 탄성계수($E_{50}$)를 계산하였다. 마지막으로 각각의 역학적 시험을 통해 얻어진 결과값으로 강도(qu)와 탄성계수 ($E_{50}$)의 상관관계와 추정식으로 구한 강도와 일축압축강도 시험으로 얻어진 강도와의 상관관계를 분석하였고, 자유단 공진주 시험의 탄성계수(E)값과 일축압축시험의 결과로 얻어진 탄성계수($E_{50}$)의 상관관계를 분석하였다.
